Early Evidence Of Maya Hieroglyphic Writing At Kichpanha, Belize, Eric C. Gibson, Leslie C. Shaw, Daniel R. Finamore Jan 1986

Early Evidence Of Maya Hieroglyphic Writing At Kichpanha, Belize, Eric C. Gibson, Leslie C. Shaw, Daniel R. Finamore

Index of Texas Archaeology: Open Access Gray Literature from the Lone Star State

Archaeological research, conducted intermittently at Kichpanha, Belize, from 1973 to 1983 was primarily limited to surveying and mapping. During the 1985 season, test excavations initiated in the 1983 season were continued (Gibson 1985a). House mounds and plazuela groups yielded further evidence of extensive use of the site from the Xe and early facet Mamom phases (relatively dated to approximately 900-700 B.C.), until its near total abandonment in the Early Postclassic (ca. A.D. 900-1000). In this paper we present some preliminary results of the 1985 season at Kichpanha in the context of our research foci which included economic relationships with the …

Evangelical Equality: Religious Consecration, Mission, And Witness Part 1, Sandra Marie Schneiders Jan 1986

Evangelical Equality: Religious Consecration, Mission, And Witness Part 1, Sandra Marie Schneiders

Jesuit School of Theology

One of the most important realizations that the inner church tensions of the last twenty years has brought home to us is the governing role that ecclesiology plays in our understanding of virtually every aspect of Christian life. Prior to Vatican II, we understood ecclesiology as the clear and indisputable description of a fairly static and unchanging institution. Following the lead of Pius XII, whose groundbreaking encyclical Mystici Corporis(1) revived the biblical-approach to the mystery of God’s People, the Council evoked a variety of Old and New Testament images by which to suggest the richness of that complex reality we …

Piaget And Parables Assimilated: A Response To Cole, James D. Foster, Glenn T. Moran Jan 1986

Piaget And Parables Assimilated: A Response To Cole, James D. Foster, Glenn T. Moran

Faculty Publications - Doctor of Psychology (PsyD) Program

Dick T. Cole's critique of our integration of Piagetian learning theory and Christ's parabolic method focuses on two primary concerns. The first concern is that the Bible should not be used as data, and the second that current psychological concepts cannot be meaningfully related to biblical times. In response to these concerns it is argued that the parables are recorded lessons and not theological concepts as Cole suggests, that the underlying structure of biblical lessons is relevant to modem learning theory, and that cultural specificity does not hinder the learning process but rather is an essential part of it.

Humans And Other Animals: A Biological And Ethical Perspective, Ashley Montagu Jan 1986

Humans And Other Animals: A Biological And Ethical Perspective, Ashley Montagu

Attitudes Towards Animals Collection

What I have been hoping to do in this talk is to provide the scientific basis for the biological kinship of humans with other animals in particular and the whole of nature in general, and to show that the ethical perspective to which such a demonstration leads is inherent in the very nature of nature, that cooperation, love, not conflict and aggression, as we have long been led to believe, is the dominant principle by which living creatures are designed to live with each other. It was not Darwin, but the muscular Darwinists, like Herbert Spencer, who wasn't a biologist …
