Organic Models In The Poetics, David Gallop
Organic Models In The Poetics, David Gallop
The Society for Ancient Greek Philosophy Newsletter
According to Aristotle, art (technë) imitates nature. This celebrated doctrine is not limited to what we call the 'fine arts', or to works of 'art' in any narrow modern sense; and it does not mean that such art-works copy things in the natural order. It means, more generally, that craftsmen adopt means to produce ends; and that in doing so, they follow a pattern found throughout organic nature. The crafts, in their respective domains, do what nature does everywhere. This parallel often provides Aristotle with analogies from the crafts to illuminate the workings of nature. ,The Poetics is uniquely interesting …

Archaeological And Historical Investigations At The West End Of The Martin And Bowie Streets Connections, San Antonio, Bexar County, Texas, Bruce A. Nightengale, Anne A. Fox, I. Waynne Cox
Index of Texas Archaeology: Open Access Gray Literature from the Lone Star State
Test excavations were conducted in November 1987 by the Center for Archaeological Research, The University of Texas at San Antonio at the site of a planned relocation of the eastbound lanes of Martin Street in downtown San Antonio. The lots in question were located on the north side of the early town site, and were known to have contained the residence of Thaddeus Smith, the county clerk for Bexar County in the last half of the 19th century. Testing was done by backhoe and by controlled hand excavations.
Testing was done in relation to each of the three structures that …

In Vitro Fertilization: Are There Still Ethical Problems?, Carol A. Tauer Ph.D.
In Vitro Fertilization: Are There Still Ethical Problems?, Carol A. Tauer Ph.D.
Journal of the Minnesota Academy of Science
The initial development of the technique of in vitro fertilization (IVF) was accompanied by discussion of related ethical questions. Two significant ones were: Did the development of IVF justify the wastage of human embryos which made it possible? Was it justifiable to attempt human embryo transfer without laboratory studies to determine the safety of the technique? Thousands of births as a result of IVF have largely made these two questions moot. But four others remain: Is IVF immoral because it accomplishes procreation in a laboratory rather than through an act of marital union? Is it permissible to maximize the success …

AMERICA'S LARGEST RELIGION IS more often blamed for creating our environmental problems than credited with helping to solve them. Indeed, ever since historian Lynn White, Jr., published "The Historical Roots of Our Ecological Crisis" (Science magazine in 1967), the anti-earth nature of Christianity has become standard doctrine in environmental circles. (Mother Earth News, Nov/Dec issue, repeated this truism in their "Open Road" column.)
The quote above from the first chapter of Genesis forms the backbone of White's-and others'-arguments that Christianity is an anti-ecological religion. And certainly, the notion of subduing the earth and taking dominion over its creatures does sound …

Beyond A Patriarchal Interpretation, Holly Nicole Schamban
Beyond A Patriarchal Interpretation, Holly Nicole Schamban
Senior Scholar Papers
Important in understanding the significance of the Hebrew Bible is the knowledge of how societal and cultural realities affected the ways in which the Hebrew Bible was interpreted. The thesis begins with an examination of the societal and cultural conditions which led to interpretations portraying male supremacy. It theorizes that derogatory images of women, stereotyping them as evil, corrupt, and inferior to men, were in fact due to the masculine biases present in biblical texts as a result of societal and cultural tendencies and were not the intent of the original texts themselves. In fact, patriarchal interpretations of biblical narratives …
