Creating A Favorable Sentiment: Allensworth, California, Myra Frances Burton

Theses

As the nineteenth century drew to a close, most Americans expressed optimism for the future. In the decades following the Civil War, the United States emerged as a burgeoning industrial nation, a nation filled with opportunity and promise. However, not all Americans shared this optimism. For African-Americans, the future would be remarkably similar to the past. From 1865-1877, AfricanAmericans enjoyed a new status in society. The thirteenth, fourteenth, and fifteenth amendments to the constitution conferred a measure of legal equality upon blacks, raising hopes of eventual social inclusion in American society. These hopes vanished in the wake of a new …

Christianity's Boundary-Making Bath: The New Testament Meaning Of Baptism, The Sacrament Of Unity, Edgar Krentz Jan 1995

Christianity's Boundary-Making Bath: The New Testament Meaning Of Baptism, The Sacrament Of Unity, Edgar Krentz

Institute of Liturgical Studies Occasional Papers

(Excerpt)

Baptism puts us squarely into the significance of Easter, Christ, and the Christian life. When I spoke to you a year ago on the Lord's Supper in the New Testament, it was possible for me to deal at length with every passage in the New Testament that mentions the Lordly Meal. It is quite different with baptism. It is found frequently in New Testament texts-many of them. Indeed, one can say that baptism is more significant to the New Testament church than is the Lord's Supper. We can almost set up a proportion: Baptism is to the early church …

Six natural history institutions contributed video and other images to produce a single multimedia exhibit about famous paleontology sites throughout the United States. In Mesozoic Monsters. Mammals and Magnolias users can view videos of the original excavation of each of the sites and also play computer games relating to each location. This project provides a model for how collaboration among museums can reduce the cost of multimedia exhibits while improving quality and making them available to wider audiences.

The Promethean, Volume 03, Number 02, Winter 1995, English Department, Concordia University-Portland

The Promethean

Well, I'm sure I'm not the only one that has had a crazy term. It has been full of excitement and deadlines, but through it all I have felt that The Promethean's outcome would reflect nothing but the excellence found on Concordia's campus. I hope that you will agree as you look through the pages of this term's issue.

I would like to take an opportunity to express my gratitude to all of those people who have helped me "learn the ropes" this term. First of all, thanks to my staff for accepting a new editor with no questions asked. …
