The Only Thing You Really Got Is This Minute: Homeless Women Re-Visioning The Future, Kathryn M. Feltey, Laura Nichols Oct 1999

The Only Thing You Really Got Is This Minute: Homeless Women Re-Visioning The Future, Kathryn M. Feltey, Laura Nichols

Sociology

As we enter the millennium, growing numbers of women and children join the ranks of the homeless around the globe. 1 Common factors contributing to homelessness include the feminization of poverty, a shortage of affordable low-income housing and welfare policies focused on short-term relief. Unique factors include war and political upheaval that produce a mobile population of refugees who are homeless.

In thinking about the corning millennium, feminists are challenged to envision a future where the economics and politics of gender do not inevitably produce poverty and homelessness. Homelessness in women's lives is both a symptom and an outcome of …

Southern Post-Modernism, Anti-Romanticism And Gender Difference In Flannery O'Connor And Some Other Southern Contemporaries, Ada Skillern

Masters Theses & Specialist Projects

Flannery O' Connor has long been an established southern writer of the mid-twentieth century. This paper discusses briefly the tenets of both Modernism and Post-Modernism as literary movements of the twentieth-century, then looks specifically at how O'Connor's fiction makes her a key hallmark figure in the movement known as Post-Modernism, but also as one of the first female southern writers to utilize very anti-Romantic themes and style. Further, this paper attempts to examine through a discussion of various contemporary male and female southern writers the depth of O'Connor's influence on their own works. Attention is also given to the differences …

Bigger Than A Ballot Box, Joanne Goodwin Apr 1999

Bigger Than A Ballot Box, Joanne Goodwin

History Faculty Research

The relationship between the histories of woman suffrage and U.S. politics suffered from a reluctance on the part of both fields to include the other until recently. Political historians refrained from in-depth discussions of the eighty-year movement to gain the vote for women until the new political history expanded the definition of political actors and activities. Adele Clark : Suffragist And Women's Rights Pioneer For Virginia, Amanda Garrett

Honors Theses

This study chronicles the life of Adele Clark, a political activist, writer, civic educator and artist. Over the span of her one hundred year life (September 27, 1882-June 4, 1983) her passion for improving society led her to campaign for suffrage for women, the rights of children, and increased opportunities for all mankind. In addition, Adele Clark's personality is explored to reveal what she was like as an individual and to explain the reasons behind her actions, which were a force for change. This work is based heavily on research in the Adele Clark Papers, which are housed at Virginia …
