Homeland Insecurities: Teaching And The Intercultural Imagination, John Kuo Wei Tchen Jan 2005

Homeland Insecurities: Teaching And The Intercultural Imagination, John Kuo Wei Tchen

Imagining America

John Kuo Wei Tchen, director of the Asian/Pacific/American Studies Program and Institute and associate professor of the Gallatin School for Individualized Study and the History Department of the Faculty of Arts & Sciences, New York University, brings to life three imagined students, who reflect the experiences of many real students. On behalf of “Alice,” “Alicia,” and “Ai Ling,” Tchen asks, “What must we be doing in our classrooms?” and “What must we be doing in our communities?” From the dilemmas faced by these students, Tchen draws lessons for higher education. He envisions a university that adopts “an intercultural version of …

Failing The Race: A Historical Assessment Of New Orleans Mayor Sidney Barthelemy, 1986-1994, Lyle Kenneth Perkins Jan 2005

Failing The Race: A Historical Assessment Of New Orleans Mayor Sidney Barthelemy, 1986-1994, Lyle Kenneth Perkins

LSU Master's Theses

New Orleans’ voters elected Sidney Barthelemy as the city’s second African American mayor in 1986. Historical treatments of Barthelemy’s tenure generally do not hold him in the same high regard as New Orleans’ first African American mayor, Ernest Morial. Yet, unfavorable evaluations of Barthelemy reflect the maturation of African American politics in the Crescent City. Symbolic victories no longer resonate with an African American populous in need of substantive gains to redress longstanding social and economic inequities. With the passage of the Voting Rights Act of 1965, the struggle for African American equality entered its next phase, the transition from …

Perceptions Of Physical Therapy Faculty On The Inclusion Of Spirituality In Physical Therapy Education, Janice C. Pitts

Dissertations

Problem

There is limited research literature on the integration of spirituality in the field of physical therapy or within its academic environment.

Method

The study utilized standard survey research methodology to gather data relating to spirituality and its inclusion in a physical therapy curriculum. Five participants from each of 101 sampled programs received a survey instrument along with instructions and consent form disseminated through electronic mailing. Data …

It also identified the benefits and barriers of using a feminist ideology with these women, as expressed by support staff who have worked with Caribbean-Canadian women. “Ethnographizing” Service-Learning: Creating Politically Engaged Anthropology, Wendy Ann Hathaway Jan 2005

“Ethnographizing” Service-Learning: Creating Politically Engaged Anthropology, Wendy Ann Hathaway

USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations

Service-Learning is a popular teaching method that is increasingly being adopted by institutions of higher learning throughout the nation and is enthusiastically promoted as a progressive method for mediating the alleged decline in civic responsibility and ameliorating subsequent social ills. Servicelearning courses are also seen as an answer to growing student disinterest by connecting students to “real world” experiences while simultaneously providing much needed community support in the face of receding social services in this “Post-Welfare” moment (Goode and Maskovsky 2001a).

Anthropological insights, born out of a liberal humanistic tradition, can be employed to critically examine this popular educational and …

There is always a danger in being overly focused on a task. When this happens, we can fail to see other tasks or parallel tasks that are equally demanding. This paper focuses on some other “windows,” beyond the “10/40 Window,” that also call for serious attention, concerted prayer, specialized training, their own unique strategies, and a variety of personnel/gifts.

The Internet World Of Fan Fiction, Melissa Jean Herzing Jan 2005

The Internet World Of Fan Fiction, Melissa Jean Herzing

Theses and Dissertations

Fan fiction, the most popular creative outlet for fans, allows the amateur writer an opportunity to be published and receive immediate feedback from peers. As educators, we can learn from the fan communities as they participate in online activities, especially fan fiction. Students are more likely to embrace entertaining and creative assignments. And since much of the world is linked to the Internet in one way or another, we can allow students an opportunity to not only improve their writing skills, but also enhance their knowledge of the Internet and its capabilities. My study included online interviews with fan fiction …

Faith and Light is a Christian community that exists for people with an intellectual disability, their families and their friends, and that meets monthly to reflect on Scripture, to pray and to celebrate together. It promotes presence to one another and friendship amongst its members. This ethnographic study explored how parents from a local community experienced the "launching" phase of the family life cycle.
