A Puritan And His Devil : Religious Conflict Between William Prynne And William Laud, 1625-1645, Faye Newton Jan 1966

A Puritan And His Devil : Religious Conflict Between William Prynne And William Laud, 1625-1645, Faye Newton

Honors Theses

In the period between 1625 and 1645, William Prynne "issued nearly a score of tracts," attacking English prelacy in general and William Laud in particular, twice suffered the severest of penalties next to death, endured lengthy imprisonment, and vanquished one of England's most powerful men, all in the name of militant Puritanism. During those twenty years, Prynne's savage but effective pen was directed almost solely to one holy end, the irrevocable defeat of the Laudian interpretation of worship by the English successors of Calvin. For Prynne there could be no thought of compromise. The forces of darkness were at work …

ACKNOWLEDGING the fact of last month's outer-space rendezvous of Gemini 6 and 7 is one thing; realization of its meaning and ultimate significance is quite another. To groundlings in Southeast Kansas, the whole magnificent but virtually incredible achievement is too far out rationally as well as spatially. Moreover, there seems to us to be a more than ample supply of earthbound (even earthy) problems which cry for attention, questions which require fuller discussion, matters more immediate than moon-shots. The contents of this winter issue demonstrate our prior involvement in matters more humane and, to us …

Theology And Moden Literature-Survey, Donald L. Deffner Nov 1965

Theology And Moden Literature-Survey, Donald L. Deffner

Concordia Theological Monthly

In Randall Stewart's American Literature and Christian Doctrine, the author unabashedly abandons "the so-highly-prized, the so-strenuously-inculcated academic neutrality" (p. viii) and pleads for a creatively critical evaluation of modern literature by Christian theologians. According to Stewart, the Christian critic must charge contemporary literature "to give an answer for the faith" that is in it. In the same spirit, John Killinger insists he must "ask hard questions of the creative arts… that the critic [the theologian] must judge, or it has nothing at all to say." (Sec John Killinger, The Failure of Theology in Modem Literature, pp. 15, 16)

GENERALLY SPEAKING, spring is a non-political season. Certainly, with the snow and ice melting away, the winds of March rattling the windows, and the elm buds burgeoning against the blue sky, political practice and theory seem to belong somewhere else in time and space. But, the news constantly, forceably, shockingly thrusts politics into eye, heart, mind, and viscera every day, whether that news comes from Saigon, Selma, Topeka, or Washington. Your American is first and foremost a political animal. If he isn't he needs to be. John Adams and Tom Jefferson understood this; Henry Thoreau …

A Study To Determine What Caused Students To Discontinue Attending The Burley Seminary Before Obtaining A Fourth-Year Certificate 1961-1965, Charles Durrell Salisbury Jan 1965

A Study To Determine What Caused Students To Discontinue Attending The Burley Seminary Before Obtaining A Fourth-Year Certificate 1961-1965, Charles Durrell Salisbury

Theses and Dissertations

It was the writer's purpose to determine the reason students discontinued seminary before obtaining a fourth-year certificate from the Burley L. D. S. Seminary between the years 1961-1965. In addition to this, means of helping to solve the problems of the students who discontinued seminary were sought. Questionnaires were sent to 92 students who had discontinued seminary; a questionnaire was also given to 61 students who were still in seminary. The results of these questionnaires were tabulated by the Brigham Young University Data Processing Service. Of the 92 students who discontinued seminary and received questionnaires, 66 (70 per cent) were …

A Study Of Soviet Music Education, Norman Alan Haltmeyer Jan 1964

A Study Of Soviet Music Education, Norman Alan Haltmeyer

Dissertations and Theses @ UNI

The great emphasis that the people and government of the Union of Soviet Socialist Republics place upon the study of music, and the encouragement that they give to musical participation on the amateur and professional levels make an investigation of Soviet music education most appropriate . This study has been made with the hope of achieving a new and better understanding of the Soviet method of educating the people and, more specifically, education as related to music . This age of tremendous unique educational advance brings the responsibility of improved instruction to every society. The future of the United States …

Fundamentalism And The Missouri Synod, Milton Rudnick May 1963

Fundamentalism And The Missouri Synod, Milton Rudnick

Doctor of Theology Dissertation

The conclusion of this study is that Fundamentalism and the Missouri Synod were not related closely enough for either to exert major influence upon the other. Basic factors in the background of each group kept them at a distance from one another, and, while their paths were often parallel, they never actually converged. The relationship was, for the most part, cordial, but never intimate, with the result that there was no important interchange of ideas and attitudes. It is for this reason that the word "in" had to become "and"--"Fundamentalism and the Missouri Synod,” signifying the revised view of at …

The Role Of Newspapers In Russell County School Consolidation, Andrew Norfleet Aug 1962

The Role Of Newspapers In Russell County School Consolidation, Andrew Norfleet

Masters Theses & Specialist Projects

There has never been a serious study of any kind made relative to the schools of Russell County. That, perhaps, is the main reason for a hodge-podge of records because no scholar evidently has had a reason for collecting them into a treatise that would give a running, accurate account of what took place here educationally from the time the county was organized in 1825 to the present. This thssis does not attempt to ferret out all the aspects of Russell's schools from that early date until now, but concentrates instead on a rather late happening—consolidation, and the role that …

A Study Of Drop-Outs From Twelve Seminaries In Utah Conducted During 1960-61, Roy Fearnley Hatch Jan 1961

A Study Of Drop-Outs From Twelve Seminaries In Utah Conducted During 1960-61, Roy Fearnley Hatch

Theses and Dissertations

Public educators are using drop-out studies as a means of improving the curriculum and increasing the holding power of the schools. The public educators are attempting to prepare man for life and the religious educators are attempting to prepare man for eternity. There have been many studies concerning the public school drop-outs, but this is the first one concerning seminary drop-outs.

The purpose of this study has been to determine why some students drop-out of seminary before graduation. After learning the reasons for the students dropping out, it is important that changes be made to increase the enrollment and holding …

A Study Of The Religious Behavior Of The Graduates Of A Selected School Of Nursing, Louise Maybelle Brown Apr 1958

A Study Of The Religious Behavior Of The Graduates Of A Selected School Of Nursing, Louise Maybelle Brown

Loma Linda University Electronic Theses, Dissertations & Projects

This was a study of the religious behavior of the nurses who have graduated from a selected school of nursing. The purposes of the study were (1) to obtain information as to what the graduates of the selected school have been and are doing relative to their everyday religious behavior and practices, and (2) to ascertain to what extent, if any, this school of nursing has influenced the every-day religious behavior and practices of the graduates. Religious behavior was defined as that behavior which can be observed in public and private religious activities such as Bible study, prayer, church attendance …
