Jealousy In Shakespeare's Tragedies, Harold M. Kimball Jan 1929

Jealousy In Shakespeare's Tragedies, Harold M. Kimball

University of the Pacific Theses and Dissertations

In undertaking a study of the theme of jealousy, one must make some limitation of material. The field of literature as a whole, or the more limited ones of drama or even tragedy - each of these is too large for so short a study as this must be. Only certain aspects of such a restricted subject as the tragedies of Shakespeare can be given any thorough treatment, while others, both interesting and profitable, must be put aside; for instance, space will prohibit a careful comparison of Shakespeare's use of jealousy with that of other dramatists; nor can a study …

The Status Of The Worcester Negro, Ella L. Vinal Jan 1929

The Status Of The Worcester Negro, Ella L. Vinal

Historical Dissertations & Theses

Challenged by the fact that many of the Negroes of Worcester do on seem to be occupying the places for which they are trained economically or culturally, this study was entered upon in an attempt to discover the true status of the Worcester Negro, to describe the problems which underlie the limitation of his activities, and to define a program whereby he may be led into a more complete realization of his personality, and, unhampered, make his full contribution to the community life of which he is a part. To this end a survey has been made.

This survey, of …

Andromaque -- Jean Racine, Mary C. Miley Jan 1929

Andromaque -- Jean Racine, Mary C. Miley

Bachelors’ Theses

When Richelieu was concerned with the unification of France, and Corneille had produced "Le Cid", and Descartes had introduced his "Discours sur la Methode" in the same year which had seen the tragedy of Horace, there was introduced among this galaxy of literary luminaries, the author of "Andromaque", Jean Racine.

Standards Of Criticism For The American Novel, Marie Dwyer Jan 1929

Standards Of Criticism For The American Novel, Marie Dwyer

Bachelors’ Theses

This thesis has been worked out so that I shall have some criteria for judging novels. I have ventured to write about modern novelists about whom critics are not agreed; my interest is not so much in that they said of certain authors as it is in determining why they accept some and reject others, and what they use as their basis of judging.

The technique of the novel, and its approach to great art was developed in order to gain a feeling for the novel apart from any country or section.

If undue emphasis has been placed upon the …

Articulation Of Junior And Senior High School Curricula, Belle Joachims Jan 1929

Articulation Of Junior And Senior High School Curricula, Belle Joachims

University of the Pacific Theses and Dissertations

Our American school system with its distinction between elementary and secondary schools grew out of European tradisione. The history of secondary education in America abone that there have been three periods of development, each characterized by a dietinot type of school. As our colonial policies were shaped by Europeans, naturally our schools were organized to confora with the European institutions; and the Latin grammar school was the dominant institution for secondary education in American until the middle of the eighteenth century. During the Revolutionary period there was a tendency to turn from the school fostering social distinction to one more …

The New In Music, Alma Lowry Williams Jan 1929

The New In Music, Alma Lowry Williams

University of the Pacific Theses and Dissertations

The selection of the subject, “The New in Music,” was prompted by an interest in the frequent appearance of new aspects in the art music. The following critique is the result of an attempt to uncover forces which work toward forming the new, to evaluate essential factors of newness, and to consider the reaction of the public to new musical trends.

Although the accent of the work is placed on the music of the late Nineteenth and early Twentieth Centuries, consideration is also given to essentially new aspects of music during the earlier period since the Fourteenth Century. Complexities of …

Possibilities Of Character Formation In Our Public Schools, Julia I. Shinnick Aug 1928

Possibilities Of Character Formation In Our Public Schools, Julia I. Shinnick

Bachelors’ Theses

The end of all education should be the formation of character. Father Hull defines character as "life dominated by principles". No sentence containing four words expresses more food for thought. Life is made up of thoughts, words, and actions. The problem is how are these thoughts, words, and actions determined? The man without character acts upon impulse and he speaks and acts as these impulses seize him. If such a man's life is at all consistent it is because he lacks any originality or initiative to do otherwise. His character depends upon his impulses, or upon the good or bad …
