Silas Mitchell, Poet, Margaretha Strodthoff Jan 1940

Silas Mitchell, Poet, Margaretha Strodthoff

Bachelors’ Theses

There was a man whose name was Luke. He was not a clergyman, he was a physician. He felt, however, that he had something to say about the Master which none of those other men had said. So he wrote the gospel of Luke, which many people regard as the best book in the Bible. "Many have undertaken to set forth in order the facts about Jesus Christ and it seemed good to me also to write", he said. There was another physician and "it seemed good to him also to write". This physician was Silas Weir Mitchell. He rose …

The Use And Improvement Of Class Methods For Beginning School Band Instruction, Alfred P. Sessions

University of the Pacific Theses and Dissertations

The purpose of this thesis is the (1) study of the band class methods in use, (2) a discussion of their effectiveness, (3) an original attempt to show how many of the problems of band methods can be solved.

It should be noted that a class of instrumental students may be a group of several or all different kinds of band instruments together. This study, however, will be concerned mainly with group instruction which combines all of the band instruments together. The term "method" as used herein designates a book of music material for class instruction in all band instruments. …

The Vocascope - An Experimental Study In The Visual Measurement Of Pitch And Quality, John C. Crabbe Jan 1940

The Vocascope - An Experimental Study In The Visual Measurement Of Pitch And Quality, John C. Crabbe

University of the Pacific Theses and Dissertations

The project herein described is an experimental attempt to con- struct visual aids for the study of voice. Its purposes are: (1) to ako possible the visual perception of pitch change on a vertical scale; (2) to isolate certain overtones of the fundamental frequency in the hope of deriving some assistance to the improvement of quality. The principle of operation is the psychological phenomenon of stroboscopy, the illusion of stationary, constant light, as a result of synchronized interrupted vision. The Vocascope is composed of four essential parts: (1) the scanning drugs, (2) the light source, (3) the amplifier, (4) the …

A Study Of The Interrelations Between Dos Passos' Personal Philosophy, Objectives, And Techniques And The Influence Of The Zeitgeist On Them, James R. Wilson Jan 1940

A Study Of The Interrelations Between Dos Passos' Personal Philosophy, Objectives, And Techniques And The Influence Of The Zeitgeist On Them, James R. Wilson

University of the Pacific Theses and Dissertations

For several reasons Dos Passos is important to the development of American literature. His novels, with their integrity, breadth, and architectonic form, are painted on a larger canvas than any other American writers. In Manhattan Transfer, his fourth novel, he attempted to portray the greatest metropolis in the world, New York City. He succeeded as well as anyone ever has. Then, refusing to rest on his cars, he went on to the trilogy U. S. A., which takes all of twentieth century American life as its subject. This is Dos Passos' epic of modern Americanlife, the most successful of the …
