In the years since the end of the Second World War, no aspect of merchant shipping has created greater controversy than the phenomenal growth of the merchant fleet of the Soviet Union. Starting in 1945 with a makeshift fleet that was a motley collection of obsolete vessels, ships received as reparations from the defeated Axis nations and Lend-Lease Liberty ships, the Soviets have fashioned a modern, efficient merchant marine that is currently second in the world in numbers of ships and sixth in deadweight tonnage. Employed as a powerful instrument of the Soviet state, this fleet now competes effectively with …

This is the fifth in a series of interviews with the President of Wright State University, Dr. Robert J. Kegerreis. This interview focuses on the priorities of School of Medicine development; perceptions of Dean Beljan; the School of Nursing controversy; and the appointment of Dr. Beljan as Vice President for Health Affairs and then University Provost.

Dr. Kegerreis first discusses the recruiting of department chairs; the building of the Medical Sciences building; the hospital affiliations; and recruitment of volunteer clinical faculty. This book had its beginning in our belief that it was appropriate in celebrating the seventy-fifth anniversary of Claremont Teachers College to record the significant contribution its staff and students have made to the development of Western Australia.

The idea of writing a sequel to Dr Mossenson's history of the first fifty years was endorsed by the College Council and I was given the task of finding a historian who would take on this work.
