The Vanguard (Vol. 35, No. 4), Jul-Aug 1989, Lutheran Human Relations Association Of America

The Vanguard

Armies of both liberation and occupation have incited fear throughout history in the lands through which they marched or in which they were posted. Since World War II, an increasingly militarized world has continued to suffer under the power of this military presence.

Strong cries of protest are now not only being raised, but are also finally being heard. Not surprisingly, they are women's voices. Women worldwide, struggling for their own human rights, are also expressing the rage and horror of their people who witness the ravishment of their culture, their land, and their lives.

Liturgy And Culture: Overcoming The Tensions, Mary Kay Oosdyke O.P.

Institute of Liturgical Studies Occasional Papers

(Excerpt)

Recently a Danish film was shown in theaters around the country called "Babette's Feast." The setting of the film is a small village in a remote section of Denmark where the people belong to a strict religious sect. Their life, their food, and their religious practice reflect the austerity of the surrounding land. The leader and founder of the sect is a widower with two daughters, both of whom are attractive and gifted. The story is about their lives and the life of the little community.

Human Rights, Women, And Third World Development, Winston E. Langley

William Monroe Trotter Institute Publications

As part of the effort to inaugurate a new international socio-political order after World War II, international emphasis was given to certain moral and legal entitlements we have come to call human rights. That emphasis initially found its most forceful expression in the Charter of the United Nations, which not only asserts its members' faith in fundamental human rights, in the dignity and worth of the human person, as well as in the equal rights of men and women of all nations, but also recites its members' commitment to employ international machinery for the promotion of the social and economic …
