A Feminized Work Force, A Humanized Workplace, Evelyn Murphy
A Feminized Work Force, A Humanized Workplace, Evelyn Murphy
New England Journal of Public Policy
Enhancing the opportunities for women in the workplace in the next decade will become an economic imperative, not just an issue of social justice. In this article Lieutenant Governor Evelyn Murphy sets forth recommendations for policymakers in both the public and private sector that begin to change our notions of what constitutes a humanized workplace. If the economy is to remain strong, these initiatives will be required to improve business productivity as well as the life of all family members.
Women And Philanthropy: New Voices, New Visions, Marcy Murninghan
Women And Philanthropy: New Voices, New Visions, Marcy Murninghan
New England Journal of Public Policy
This article examines the growing presence and influence of women in American contemporary philanthropy. Based in part upon structured interviews conducted with leaders in the women's funding movement, it identifies how the voices and visions of women — within older, more traditional foundations as well as newer "women's funds" — are having an impact on the way the needs of human community are met. It also sheds light on how these voices and visions serve to reconceive the connections among morality, money, and power, thereby contributing to an understanding of economic morality.

Winona Campus Life, Mass Communication Department
Winona Campus Life, Mass Communication Department
Winona Campus Life
Winona Campus Life was a weekly laboratory newspaper produced by the WSU Mass Communciation Department students and printed as a supplement to the Sunday Winona Daily News, which began in September 1983. The newspaper provided coverage of the four institutions of higher education in Winona: Winona State University, St. Mary's University, College of Saint Teresa, and Winona Area Vocational-Technical School. It was created to provide a place for Mass Communcation students to publish their articles and photographs with the idea of generating reader feedback, which is essential in journalism education.

During the mid-1980s, the Rural Crisis Issue Team of the National Council of churches worked with several Inner-City Church Groups on the loss of land experienced by farmers, especially black farmers, and the changing food system and Rural-Urban Connection Conferences across the country. It was evident by the attendance at those events that urban dwellers were not too concerned that farmers were being forced from the land but some participants registered concern over the quality and price of food stuffs.
Establishing The Phenomenon: The Rhetoric Of Early Research Reports On Aids, Carol Reeves
Establishing The Phenomenon: The Rhetoric Of Early Research Reports On Aids, Carol Reeves
Scholarship and Professional Work - LAS
In the first three medical reports on AIDS which were published in 1981 in the New England Journal of Medicine, the writers' primary rhetorical agenda was to argue that a new medical discovery had been made. A secondary agenda was to offer etiological explanations for the new problem. To establish the new disease entity as deserving serious attention, the writers built a sense of mystery by confronting established medical knowledge about immunodeficiency and emphasizing the inability of modern medicine to diagnose and treat the problem. When they explained the phenomenon in etiological terms, rather than confronting the disciplinary matrix, the …

Can Virtue Be Taught?, William J. Prior
Can Virtue Be Taught?, William J. Prior
Philosophy
I want to begin my presentation of Aristotle's views with a brief look at his predecessor and mentor, Plato. You probably remember the answer that Plato gave to the question "Can virtue be taught?" in the Meno. There, in response to Meno's skepticism about the possibility of discovering the nature of virtue (a skepticism induced by Socrates' refutation of his various attempts to define virtue), Plato had Socrates present his famous theory that learning is recollection. It is possible to teach virtue, Plato suggests, because people already have an innate knowledge of the nature of virtue, knowledge that has been …
