Evolution And Strengths Of School Lunch Programs In The United States And Japan, Sarah Ritterling
Evolution And Strengths Of School Lunch Programs In The United States And Japan, Sarah Ritterling
Honors Program: Senior Projects (Public)
School lunches around the world perform a vital role in children’s nutritional needs and overall health. These nutritional programs provide a chance for children to learn how to create a balanced meal and about the production and serving of food. However, many countries, including the United States and Japan, have taken different approaches to meet these goals, influenced by the needs of children and communities over time. The United States provides support, funding, and nutritional standards through the National School Lunch Program. Japan promotes the Basic Act of Shokuiku (food and nutrition education) within society and outlines goals for schools …

Riding Through The Great Depression: The Impact Of Pack Horse Librarians, Madison G. Reed
Riding Through The Great Depression: The Impact Of Pack Horse Librarians, Madison G. Reed
Young Historians Conference
Supported by Eleanor Roosevelt and the Roosevelt Administration during the Great Depression, the Works Progress Administration (WPA) was part of Roosevelt’s “alphabet soup” agencies. It didn’t take long for the WPA, which sought to provide work, education, and culture to Americans who were struggling economically, to introduce the Pack Horse Library Project to rural Eastern Kentucky. The Pack Horse Librarians were local women hired by the federal government to bring reading material to isolated, unemployed people and children of all ages. Both secondary scholarship, focused on the role Pack Horse Librarians played in the development of community, as well as …

An Interdisciplinary Approach To The Investigation Of Consciousness, James Guy Lundie
An Interdisciplinary Approach To The Investigation Of Consciousness, James Guy Lundie
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
Questions of phenomenal consciousness have troubled intellectuals for millennia. Theologians, philosophers, and scientists continue to grapple with the problem of how our minds interact with our brains and bodies. From Anaxagoras and Aristotle, Augustine and Aquinas, Nagel and Goff, and Koch and Hameroff, the brightest among us have been unable to solve the riddle of how we are conscious, unique, self-aware thinking beings. Uniting our efforts by considering the reasoning of interdisciplinary scholars and integrating the thoughts of others with our own can only enhance our chances of success. This paper offers a pathway toward a multidisciplinary theory of consciousness …

The Things We Lose And Other Haunted Stories, Michaela Arnice Reed
The Things We Lose And Other Haunted Stories, Michaela Arnice Reed
Fiction MFA Theses
Inspired by Southern Gothic fiction and speculative short fiction, the stories in "The Things We Lose and Other Haunted Stories" explore the realms of otherness, loss, and family relationships. Though not always supernatural, each story contains a ghostly element which haunts the characters, pushing them out of their comfort zones so they may confront and grow from the fears and phenomena which threaten to break them.
Spiritual Disciplines And Christian Formative Education: Tools To Jump-Start Spiritual Formation And Eliminate Stagnation, Darrick J. Willis
Spiritual Disciplines And Christian Formative Education: Tools To Jump-Start Spiritual Formation And Eliminate Stagnation, Darrick J. Willis
Doctoral Dissertations and Projects
The researcher aims to uncover the fundamental causes of spiritual stagnation, particularly the tendency to over-rely on established traditions, and to assess the detrimental effects of this phenomenon on the life and activities of the church. Spiritual formation is the process through which Christians are transformed into the likeness of Christ by the power of the Holy Spirit. Intentionality and growth are paramount for believers, as neglecting these elements can lead to spiritual stagnation. Contemporary literature emphasizes that spiritual formative education is central to fostering intentionality. The correlation between increased knowledge and a heightened desire to learn is crucial; both …

Removing The Blame From Children In Poverty: Deficit Ideology And The Mishandling Of Behavioral Issues, Sarah Gross
Diversity & Social Justice in Education Conference
According to data from the US Census Bureau (2023), the official poverty rate for those under 18 years of age was 16%, however when adjusted to 150% of the poverty line, it is estimated that about 26% of children are living in poverty. Data from the Center for Disease Control indicates that among these children living in poverty, 1 in 5 experiences a mental, behavioral, or developmental disorder (CDC, 2022). In addition to this, the American Psychological Association reports that children and teens in poverty are at a greater risk for below average academic achievement and behavioral problems (APA, 2024). …

What’S Behind A Number? An Analysis Of Maternal Healthcare In Cuba And The Impact Of Policy On Women’S Autonomy, Brynn Urban '25
What’S Behind A Number? An Analysis Of Maternal Healthcare In Cuba And The Impact Of Policy On Women’S Autonomy, Brynn Urban '25
Honor Scholar Theses
The primary aim of this research is to contrast personal testimonies from birthing women in Cuba with the frequently boasted Cuban health statistics in order to illuminate important discrepancies existing between what is reported by the state versus the reality of individual experiences. Investigation into women’s personal testimonies of mistreatment within maternity homes and hospitals in Cuba will reveal significant disparities that exist within the socialist healthcare system that have otherwise gone unconsidered. In order to contextualize these lived experiences as products of problematic post-revolutionary ideologies, the political, economic, and social stakeholders in the Cuban healthcare system will be outlined. …
Doing More Good For Less: Salvaging Development Aid, Trey Dykeman
Doing More Good For Less: Salvaging Development Aid, Trey Dykeman
Richard T. Schellhase Essay Prize in Ethics
In stark contrast to its peak in the Marshall Plan era, professional sentiment towards international development aid has become increasingly pessimistic as its shortcomings have become apparent. Inter alia, leading thinkers charge development aid with enabling and sustaining economic dependency, governmental corruption, political power imbalances, and paternalism. Even so, there may be diamondlike programs in the development aid rough. Cash and voucher assistance (CVA) programs—a subset of development aid—have seen moderate success. In particular, as compared to other forms of aid, unconditional cash transfer programs (UCTs)—a specific type of CVA—appear economical and effective and avoid many of the above …

Does Name, Image, And Likeness Increase Gender Inequality In College Athletics?, Aimee Christenson
Political Science Theses and Capstones
In June of 2021, the National Collegiate Athletic Association adopted its first interim policy regarding Name, Image, and Likeness. From here, college athletes have been able to benefit from opportunities regarding their brand as an athlete. While this development has been historic in its expansion of rights to athletes, it highlights the inequities between male and female athletes. Title IX requires equal opportunity for male and female students. This research raises questions about whether NIL is increasing the disparity between male and female athletes. To answer this question, I looked at NIL data collected by Kyle Ems on the NIL …

From Doubter To Disciple: A Case Study On The Process Of Spiritual Transformation, Petr Činčala
From Doubter To Disciple: A Case Study On The Process Of Spiritual Transformation, Petr Činčala
Great Commission Research Journal
This study examines the spiritual transformation of Hadassah, who, despite a Christian upbringing, struggled with faith until a series of crises—including a severe car accident—catalyzed her journey toward discipleship. Grounded in theological principles such as the Great Commission and the Parable of the Sower, the article explores the unpredictable nature of spiritual growth. Integrating scientific research on conversion and six key motifs of transformation, it highlights the roles of crisis, mentorship, rituals, sensory experiences, rebirth, and triggering catalysts. Hadassah’s story underscores that discipleship is not an immediate outcome but a dynamic, ongoing process requiring divine intervention, relational support, and personal …
Rationing Hunger: The Gendered Consequences Of India's Public Distribution System, Krisha Silwal
Rationing Hunger: The Gendered Consequences Of India's Public Distribution System, Krisha Silwal
Audre Lorde Prize
This paper examines how the Public Distribution System (PDS) in India, while introduced to address hunger and food insecurity, displaces women from traditional farming, weakens their nutritional autonomy, and erases their cultural roles in food systems. The focus on subsidized rice and wheat benefits male landowners and excludes women, especially Dalit and Adivasi farmers, from agricultural decision-making. Drawing on a grassroots initiative led by Dalit women in Zaheerabad, the paper highlights how community-driven, decentralized food systems rooted in women’s knowledge can improve food security and restore autonomy. It calls for a reimagined PDS that centers women’s lived experiences and leadership.

Frankenstein Colorized, Marianne Koleng
be Still
One of my favorite novel's growing up was Mary Shelley's Frankenstein. I see Frankenstein's desire to create a "Monster" as a way to grasp at the fundamental human drive for connection, and healing through connection. In this piece, I attempt to bring that inner yearning for fundamental connection to paper.
Beyond Myself - Healing Through Pain, Marianne Koleng
Beyond Myself - Healing Through Pain, Marianne Koleng
be Still
In this piece I reflect on the importance of setbacks, non-linear growth, injuries, and pain and their ability to provide self-reflection, a platform for growth, and an crucial reminder of the fragility of life. I have often been self-critical for not following a "traditional" path in life, and reflecting on my experiences allows me to show myself grace and hopefully may influence others to do so as well.
Death Is Not The End, Marianne Koleng
Death Is Not The End, Marianne Koleng
be Still
In this piece, Death is Not the End, the juxtaposition of maintaining a connection with those lost, while simultaneously adjusting to life without them is explored. The use of mixed media to convey a spectrum of emotions surrounding death along with the use of both a skeleton, to represent death, and "normal" hands and body contours to represent life, highlight the importance that proper healing play in both mourning and celebrating life.

Fratelli Tutti And Social Media: Solidarity And Social Networks Among Locals And Urban Refugees In Kampala, Uganda, Augustine Bahemuka
Fratelli Tutti And Social Media: Solidarity And Social Networks Among Locals And Urban Refugees In Kampala, Uganda, Augustine Bahemuka
The Journal of Social Encounters
Fratelli Tutti, Pope Francis’ social encyclical, exhorts all Christians and people of good will to cultivate a spirit of fraternity and solidarity with all people in need, regardless of socio-cultural or creedal or racial differences. He challenges us to broaden our perception of “neighbour” to even include those people whose plight we encounter via social media – our digital neighbours. This paper shows how the Association of Refugee Women in Uganda (AORW- U) has used social media to amplify the voices of urban refugees living in Kampala, thereby raising public awareness; attracting global and local partnerships; and creating healthy social …

Spirituality And Ptsd Outcomes Among Service Members And Military Veterans, Jennifer Urbina Dmsc, Pa-C
Spirituality And Ptsd Outcomes Among Service Members And Military Veterans, Jennifer Urbina Dmsc, Pa-C
Lynchburg Journal of Medical Science
Post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) is a prevalent and debilitating condition among military service members and veterans, often co-occurring with moral injury (MI) and spiritual distress (SD). While conventional PTSD treatments include cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT), exposure-based therapies, and pharmacological interventions, growing evidence suggests that spirituality may play a vital role in improving PTSD outcomes. This paper explores the integration of spirituality in PTSD treatment, examining its potential to mitigate symptoms, enhance resilience, and facilitate post-traumatic growth. Military chaplaincy, spiritually integrated therapies, and Department of Defense (DoD) holistic health models provide frameworks for addressing the spiritual dimensions of PTSD. Studies indicate …
