Problem Of Liberal Orthodoxy In Russia, 1905, Paul Valliere

Scholarship and Professional Work - LAS

By the problem of Liberal Orthodoxy we mean a particular instance of the all-European and, indeed, worldwide problem of the adjustment of living religious traditions to a dynamic and distinct modern culture claiming, in greater or lesser degree, spiritual and practical autonomy in the direction of human affairs. The great revolutions of modern times, of which the Russian Revolution of 1905 is one, are particular instances of the advancing of this claim of autonomy. Liberal Orthodoxy is any Orthodoxy in modern times which envisages at least some opportunities for constructive and cooperative relationships with the forces of this modern culture; …

This is an open-ended story because the Lutheran connection of Gettysburg College is a live relationship today and gives promise of being a mutually supportive association in the future.

Gettysburg represents not only a high water mark in the history of this nation, but also a place of landmark developments for Lutheranism in America. The College and the Seminary were center stage for these developments, …

Saint Thomas And Social Justice, William Ferree S.M. Sep 1975

Saint Thomas And Social Justice, William Ferree S.M.

University of Dayton Review

The modern scientific concept of Social Justice is no older than the month of May of 1931 — the date of the publication by Pius XI of his Encyclical Quadragesimo Anno. It is true that the term “Social Justice” had been coming into increasing use since the middle of the 19th century, but its meaning was fuzzy and ambiguous and amounted to little more than “social problems.” In Pius XI, the term is a scientific renaming of the age-old “legal justice,” which comes down to us across the centuries from the golden age of Greek Philosophy but which, through more …

Jacques Maritain: Reflections On Different Kinds Of Knoweldge, Calvin Gelderloss

The primary interest in this work is to examine Maritain's solution to this problem in philosophy, and to examine it as it applies to the various kinds of knowledge. Thus, this position will be examined in connection with knowledge in general, or in connection with what might be called common sense knowledge. The Theology Of Ecology: A Bibliographical Analysis, Dwight Urbane Nelson May 1973

The Theology Of Ecology: A Bibliographical Analysis, Dwight Urbane Nelson

Western Evangelical Seminary Theses

INTRODUCTION

In this day of fads, causes, and avant-garde philosophies, the current ecologic crisis is a viable issue. It is no longer possible to confine it to the realm of academic debate or to the bylaws of some esoteric conservationist society; the critical balance between organism and environment is a factor every man must seriously consider. Scientists are now saying that there is no place on earth where the ravages of pollution and environmental misuse have not grossly affected this crucial relationship. Pollution, a reaction which injects foreign substances into the environment as well as removing necessary elements,. touches everyone. …

Johann Adam Moehler: The Method Of Historical Theology, Christina Maria Crose

Dissertations and Theses

This thesis is a study of Johann Adam Moehler's critical theology as an achievement in the nineteenth century's quest for a historical methodology. As the first Catholic theologian to apply a critical-historical analysis to the development of doctrine, Moehler is important as both the theologian and as a German historian.

As the theologian, Moehler's efforts to discover the essential meaning of Christian doctrine led him to conclude that doctrine develops within a human context of experience, namely, the Catholic Church. This development of doctrine is possible given the organic nature of the Christian community and its relationship to the divine. …
