Shepherd, Sheep, And Goats; A Study In Old Testament Concepts And Imagery, Jack Ferguson Feb 1972

Shepherd, Sheep, And Goats; A Study In Old Testament Concepts And Imagery, Jack Ferguson

Master of Divinity Thesis

The problem which this paper is concerned with, therefore, has to do with the meaning of flock imagery when itis applied to the nation of Israel, especially when Israelis compared to a goat or to a mixed flock of sheep and goats. Consequently, it is my purpose: (a) to examine the nature and composition of the flocks in the Old Testament; (b) to place a new emphasis on the nature, value, and necessity of goats as members of a flock; (c) to demonstrate the fact and significance of the combined flock, especially when it becomes a phrase which refers to …

Logic And Coercion In Bentham's Theory Of Law, David B. Lyons Feb 1972

Logic And Coercion In Bentham's Theory Of Law, David B. Lyons

Faculty Scholarship

Unlike conventional moral standards and other social rules, laws can be deliberately laid down and changed by specified procedures. It therefore seems reasonable to think of laws as issuing from or adopted by lawmakers who are ordinary human beings. Since laws tell us what must or must not be done, and since there is some temptation to understand all laws on the same pattern, it is natural to think of them as either commands or prohibitions. This is indeed a traditional view.

003 Tehui Atahu, Oral Legend Jan 1972

003 Tehui Atahu, Oral Legend

Sikaiana Oral Stories

The Story of Tehui Atahu

This is a transcript and translation of 12 pages given to me by Edwin Huilani on Sikaiana, in 1981-2. The story is about the founder hero of Sikaiana, Tehui Atahu. The back page of the manuscript is dated August 1972. Although I do not know the source, the story follows closely the stories that I heard on Sikaiana, although there are several different versions with minor differences. The original and translation should be of interest to Sikaiana people and might be an aid in language preservation.

Hernan Cortes: Conquistador And Colonizer, Hubert J. Miller Jan 1972

Hernan Cortes: Conquistador And Colonizer, Hubert J. Miller

History Faculty Publications

The conquest and colonization of Mexico initiated by Hernan Cortes resulted in the fusion of the Indian and Hispanic cultures. This fusion led to the "mestizo" culture. Cortes was the bearer of the Hispanic heritage just as the Aztecs and other Indians in Mexico and the Southwest were the carriers of the Indian heritage. In studying the life of Cortes, he is seen not only as a military conqueror but also as a colonizer in which role he left a more lasting legacy than he did as the victor over the Aztec Empire. This booklet focuses on Cortes' colonizing efforts. …

A Study To Determine Reasons Why Lds Students Were Not Enrolled In Lds Seminary In The Southern Alberta Seminary District During 1970-71, Robert Owen Mcclung

Theses and Dissertations

Religious education in The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints as given by the seminaries is to help youth achieve a meaningful testimony that God lives, Jesus is the Christ, and Joseph Smith is a prophet of God. The purpose of this study was to determine why some youth were not taking advantage of this training by enrolling in seminary.
It was determined that the teachers were a negligible reason for lack of enrollment. Rather, the reasons stemmed more from a lack of awareness of the nature of the seminary program by some priesthood leaders, by the youth and …

Qualities Of Prose, Victoria Louise Stokes Jan 1972

Qualities Of Prose, Victoria Louise Stokes

All Master's Theses

This paper identifies four qualities of prose: unity of content, cohesion, continuation, and tone. After examining handbook definitions, the need for new definitions of these qualities was evident. Each quality is defined and a type of catalogue of representative examples is offered to aid the definitions.

The qualities of prose are part of the overall act of communication and are offered only as theory. No attempt has been made to demonstrate how to write prose which would include the qualities.

The problem of this study was to investigate Brigham Young's recreational philosophy, views, practices and activities. The historical data collected indicated Brigham Young developed over a period of time a definite philosophy of recreation in regards to his personal life. He enjoyed …

The War On Words : The Office Of Censorship In World War Ii, Alvin William Mcdaniel Jr. Jan 1972

The War On Words : The Office Of Censorship In World War Ii, Alvin William Mcdaniel Jr.

University of the Pacific Theses and Dissertations

The purpose of this paper is to report on the results of research of the United States Office of Censorship from the birth of that office in 1941 to its timely death in 1945.

Jim Heath, in his article, “Domestic America during World War II: Research Opportunities for Historians,” provided the impetus for the research that has resulted in this paper. Professor Heath states that most histories of World War II have relegated the American domestic scene to a secondary place in the process of reporting on the more exciting diplomatic and military aspects of the period. He suggests that …
