Examining Six Key Concepts In Joseph Smith's Understanding Of Genesis 1:1, Kevin L. Barney Jul 2000

Examining Six Key Concepts In Joseph Smith's Understanding Of Genesis 1:1, Kevin L. Barney

BYU Studies

Joseph Smith spent Sunday afternoon, April 7, 1844, in a grove behind the Nauvoo Temple. There he gave a funeral sermon, which lasted for over two hours, dedicated to a loyal friend named King Follett, who had been crushed by a bucket of rocks while repairing a well. Known today as the King Follett Discourse and widely believed to be the Prophet's greatest sermon, this address was Joseph's most cogent and forceful presentation of his Nauvoo doctrine on the nature of God, including the ideas of a plurality of Gods and the potential of a man to become as God. …

Isaiah's Oracle Against Philistia: An Exegetical And Historical Study Of Isaiah 14:28-32, Paul Wenz May 2000

Isaiah's Oracle Against Philistia: An Exegetical And Historical Study Of Isaiah 14:28-32, Paul Wenz

Master of Sacred Theology Thesis

Isaiah's oracle against Philistia in 14:28-32 presents some unique problems to the exegete. Itis the only oracle with a chronological marker in Isaiah, i.e., it is dated at King Ahaz's death (v. 28), which raises questions of authorship for some. Chapter 1 introduces Isaiah's use of “Oracles against the Nations" (OAN) and specifically how Isaiah's oracle against Philistia is a good example of the genre, yet points out some of its unique characteristics. The translation of the pericope, with its exegetical details, is treated in chapter 2. Chapter 3 gives comments on the oracle and its setting, which is Isaiah's …

Hebraica Veritas? An Exhibition From The Collection Of The Center For Judaic Studies Library, Stephen G. Burnett, Seth Jerchower May 2000

Hebraica Veritas? An Exhibition From The Collection Of The Center For Judaic Studies Library, Stephen G. Burnett, Seth Jerchower

Department of Classics and Religious Studies: Faculty Publications

Christian Hebraism was an offshoot of Renaissance humanism whose devotees—biblical scholars, theologians, lawyers, physicians, scientists, philosophers, and teachers in Latin schools—borrowed and adapted texts, literary forms, and ideas from Jewish scholarship and tradition to meet Christian cultural and religious needs. Intellectual and cultural exchange did occur between Jew and Christian during the Middle Ages, but paled by comparison with what occurred between 1450 and 1750. Encounters between cultures can be fruitful, but also very painful. Certainly Christian Hebraism had such effects both upon European Jewry, and upon western tradition. One of the most tangible witnesses to the sudden and sustained …

The Displacement Of Jewish Identity In Stefan Zweig's "Buchmendel", Ken Frieden Jan 1999

The Displacement Of Jewish Identity In Stefan Zweig's "Buchmendel", Ken Frieden

Religion - All Scholarship

IN THE STORY "BUCHMENDEL" ( 1929), Stefan Zweig represents Jewish identity
in Vienna as it is displaced. eclipsed, and then destroyed. Yet the narrator.
a man of the world much like Zweig himself. does not mourn this process of
ethnic effacement. Instead, he bemoans the associated destruction of literary
culture at !arge and seems unconcerned about the implications for Jews in
Vienna or elsewhere. Like other residents of Vienna during the First World
War, the urbane postwar narrator even shows a measure of unexamined xenophobia, which is surprising in light of the nesh-and-blood author's Jewish ethnicity and cosmopolitanism. Because the …

“Have You Never Read?” The Significance Of Old Testament Citations In The Plot Of Matthew’S Gospel, Carl M. Hanson Apr 1998

“Have You Never Read?” The Significance Of Old Testament Citations In The Plot Of Matthew’S Gospel, Carl M. Hanson

Master of Sacred Theology Thesis

The primary purpose of this thesis is to begin to make a narrative critical examination of the use of explicit Old Testament formula citations in Matthew as they relate to the plot of the story. As an introductory study into the problem, a number of skills will be developed in this study. One prerequisite will be to explore and develop a better understanding of the narrative critical method. This means gaining the skills necessary in using this method to analyze the question above. Ancillary to this will be to gain an appreciation for the study of plot in general, and …
