Is Judaism Democratic? Reflections From Theory And Practice Throughout The Ages, Leonard J. Greenspoon Oct 2018

Is Judaism Democratic? Reflections From Theory And Practice Throughout The Ages, Leonard J. Greenspoon

Purdue University Press Book Previews

As government by the people, democracy has always had its proponents as well as opponents. What forms of government have Jewish leaders, both with and without actual political power, favored? Not surprisingly, many options have been offered theoretically and in practice. Perhaps more surprisingly, democracy has been at the heart of most systems of governance. Biblical Israel was largely a monarchy, but many writers of the Bible were critical of the excesses that almost always arise when human kings take charge: the general populace loses its freedom. In rabbinic Judaism, the majority ruled, and many principles that support modern democratic …

Review Of Golem: Modern Wars And Their Monsters By Maya Barzilai, Temma F. Berg Sep 2018

Review Of Golem: Modern Wars And Their Monsters By Maya Barzilai, Temma F. Berg

English Faculty Publications

The golem crosses many borders. A popular culture icon and an enduring image of creative power, its hybridity contributes to its elusive nature. What it is and what it means shifts over time. Maya Barzilai's Golem: Modern Wars and Their Monsters takes a unique approach. Deeply interdisciplinary, as one must be to explore such a complex and paradoxical figure, and drawing on religious, literary, cinematic, and historical contexts, Barzilai weaves a rich tapestry of golem narratives. All the while, Barzilai keeps a clear eye on the golem's ongoing association with war, seeing its birth in the clay trenches of World …

From Religious Freedom To Indigenous Sovereignty: The Case Of Lyng V. Northwest Indian Cemetery Protective Association (1988), Dana Lloyd

Dissertations - ALL

In 1988 the United States Supreme Court declared constitutional the federal government’s development plan in an area (known as the High Country) that was considered central to the religious practice of three local American Indian nations. The Court admitted that “It is undisputed that the Indian respondents’ beliefs are sincere and that the Government’s proposed actions will have severe adverse effects on the practice of their religion.” Nevertheless, because the disputed area was on public land, the Court thought that the government should be allowed to manage its property in any way it saw fit, regardless of the severe adverse …

Towards A Destructive, Unmonumental, Queer Hagiography: FéLix GonzáLez Torres And The Spiritual- Activist Potential Of Destruction, Daniel Santiago SáEnz Tabares

Conexión Queer: Revista Latinoamericana y Caribeña de Teologías Queer

This article presents an examination of two artworks by the late Cuban- American artist Félix González Torres, focusing primarily on the destructive strategies and theological potential of his work. After describing the activist and counter-monumental dimensions of «Untitled» (Portrait of Ross in L.A.) (1991) and «Untitled» (Lover Boys) (1991), the author examines these two pieces, as well as the artist’s life more generally, through the lens of queer martyrdom and queer theology to postulate a hagiographic take on González Torres’ life and oeuvre. Far from a definitive biographical study, this analysis is the result of interdisciplinary research mixed with …

Canonizing Modernism: An Avant-Garde Legacy In France’S Sacred Art Movement, 1937–1958, Heather Renee Read May 2018

Canonizing Modernism: An Avant-Garde Legacy In France’S Sacred Art Movement, 1937–1958, Heather Renee Read

Arts & Sciences Graduate Student Theses and Dissertations

This dissertation offers a critical reassessment of modernist involvement in the Sacred Art Movement, the highly controversial Catholic art renaissance undertaken by the French Dominican Order in the fragile World War II era between 1937 and 1954. Marie-Alain Couturier and Pie-Raymond Régamey, the Dominican co-editors of the influential religious art journal L’Art Sacré, led the Sacred Art Movement by arguing that to reveal the timelessness and universality of Catholic themes in the modern world, “it would be safer to turn to geniuses without faith than to believers without talent.” Far less understood are the motives that compelled these same “geniuses …

The Plausibility Of Animal Sacrifices In Ezekiel 40-48 Literally Operating In The Millennial Kingdom Under The New Covenant, Ian Bacon May 2018

The Plausibility Of Animal Sacrifices In Ezekiel 40-48 Literally Operating In The Millennial Kingdom Under The New Covenant, Ian Bacon

Masters Theses

This thesis delves into the controversy surrounding the presence of animal sacrifices in Ezekiel 40-48. In these chapters Ezekiel depicts a temple that dispensationalists believe to be literally fulfilled in the Millennial Kingdom.Yet, some claim that a literal understanding of these sacrifices in the future negates the work of Jesus on the cross. The response by many dispensationlists is to argue that these sacrifices will be performed to memorialize the death of Jesus. This thesis proves that the sacrifices in Ezekiel 40-48 are for purification purposes to atone for the contamination of sin so that the glory of Christ may …

Let The Other Be Me - The Theo-Political Predicament And The Arab In Shin Shalom’S Early Writings, Haim Otto Rechnitzer Mar 2018

Let The Other Be Me - The Theo-Political Predicament And The Arab In Shin Shalom’S Early Writings, Haim Otto Rechnitzer

CLCWeb: Comparative Literature and Culture

In his article "Let the Other be Me - The Theo-Political Predicament and the Arab in Shin Shalom's Early Writings" Haim O. Rechnitzer explores the theo-political predicament as reflected in the writings of poet, playwright and novelist Shin Shalom (Parczew Poland 1904–Haifa, Israel 1980). Particular attention is given to writings composed during the intensification of violence between Arabs and Jews in Mandatory Palestine from the early 1920s through the Arab revolt of 1936-39. This period is also a volatile period in Shalom's life; Aliya (Zionist immigration to the Land of Israel) with a Hasidic Zionist group, leaving the Hasidic settlement …

Courts Rule Too Narrowly Regarding The Right To Wear Religious Clothing In Public, Kendyl L. Green Jan 2018

Courts Rule Too Narrowly Regarding The Right To Wear Religious Clothing In Public, Kendyl L. Green

UC Law SF Journal on Gender and Justice

For numerous years, state and institutional rules have barred individuals from wearing religious clothing. Specifically, this issue has arisen in the military, the workplace, police departments, prisons, and public schools. Wearing religious clothing, particularly head coverings, is a vital aspect of Judaism, Islam, and Sikhism. The United States Constitution upholds the right to religious liberty in the First and Fourteenth Amendments. Additionally, the Religious Freedom and Restoration Act of 1993 (RFRA), Title VII of the Civil Rights Act of 1964, and the Religious Land Use and Institutionalized Persons Act (RLUIPA) statutes also protect religious freedom. Below, cases are examined that …

Crafting Citizens And Immigrants : Israeli Immigration Politics In Comparative Perspective, Yeufen Hsieh Jan 2018

Crafting Citizens And Immigrants : Israeli Immigration Politics In Comparative Perspective, Yeufen Hsieh

Legacy Theses & Dissertations (2009 - 2024)

This dissertation examines the role of shifting national identity narratives in immigration politics in deeply divided societies by focusing on the case of Israel. It raises a general question: why does a state established upon an ethnocentric national identity subsequently augment its self-definition to include certain non-co-ethnic migrants without applying the extension to all non-co-ethnic groups? I argue that although a country may initially be founded upon a seemingly-unequivocal ethnocentric national identity, this identity is not immutable. Rather, over time, a national dialogue may take place, causing the reexamination of the identity. During the transition, agents redefine “who we are” …

The Psalms Of The Spirit: A Study Of The Divine Use Of Ruach In The Book Of Psalms, Charles H. Gaulden Jan 2018

The Psalms Of The Spirit: A Study Of The Divine Use Of Ruach In The Book Of Psalms, Charles H. Gaulden

Selected Faculty Publications

dissertation is a theological study of the divine spirit (רוּ חַ ) in the bookof Psalms, more specifically within Psalms 51; 104; 139; and 143. By the expres-sion “divine use of רוּ חַ ,” the theological focus is narrowed to רוּ חַ in close lan-guage connection to Yahweh himself with various personal expressions such as “his spirit, your spirit, your good spirit, your holy spirit, and your noble spirit.” The research begins in division one with an analysis of all non-divine uses of רוּ חַ in the Psalms that have been variously translated in connection with “an-gels, breath, human disposition, …

This Unleavened Bread: Matzot As An Insight Into Iberian History, Culture, And Power Dynamics, Sadie Gelman Jan 2018

This Unleavened Bread: Matzot As An Insight Into Iberian History, Culture, And Power Dynamics, Sadie Gelman

Honors Papers

This paper examines the appearance of matzo, the unleavened bread consumed by Jews on Passover, in Spanish medieval manuscripts. Through a close analysis of decoration present in these depictions, this project will answer the following questions: why are matzot embellished in a certain way, where does this decoration come from, and what does this decoration signify? Given the constantly shifting power dynamics and cross-cultural relations in Iberia, I argue that the social and political climate of Iberia influenced how the matzo was viewed and depicted in Haggadot. Furthermore, I emphasize that the decoration of the matzot wafers were not inspired …

Unveiled Faces: The Heavenly Counterpart Traditions In Joseph And Aseneth, Andrei Orlov Jan 2018

Unveiled Faces: The Heavenly Counterpart Traditions In Joseph And Aseneth, Andrei Orlov

Theology Faculty Research and Publications

From one of the Manichaean psalms we learn that in the final moments of his life Mani was beholding his heavenly double with “eyes of light.” This was not the only encounter this Syrian visionary had with his upper celestial identity. The Cologne Mani Codex tells us that the heavenly counterpart first manifested himself to Mani at the age of twelve and he continued his visits, to assist with revelations, until Mani’s death. In several texts Mani’s celestial alter ego is designated as a spirit and even called the Paraclete, the same title the Holy Spirit bears in the Fourth …

Tastes Of Faith: Jewish Eating In The United States, Leah Hochman Dec 2017

Tastes Of Faith: Jewish Eating In The United States, Leah Hochman

The Jewish Role in American Life: An Annual Review

"Tell me what you eat, and I will tell you what you are," wrote the 18th Century French politician and musician Jean Brillat-Savarin, giving expression to long held assumptions about the role of food, taste, and eating in the construction of cultural identities.

Foodways—the cultural, religious, social, economic, and political practices related to food consumption and production—unpack and reveal the meaning of what we eat, our tastes. They explain not just our flavor profiles, but our senses of refinement and judgment. They also reveal quite a bit about the history and culture of how food operates and performs in society. …

“If You Want The History Of A White Man, You Go To The Library”: Critiquing Our Legacy, Addressing Our Library Collections Gaps, Jennifer Bowers, Katherine Crowe, Peggy Keeran

University Libraries: Faculty Scholarship

In 1864, the same year the University of Denver was founded by John Evans, then the Territorial Governor of Colorado and the Superintendent of Indian Affairs, a group of U.S. militia attacked and killed vulnerable members of the Cheyenne and Arapaho nations at Sand Creek. Using Critical Race Theory and the feminist “ethic of care,” we critique our collections in terms of the Massacre and absent Native American voices, in order to develop a collecting philosophy and direction to acknowledge and address the gaps, and to formulate strategies for teaching students to interrogate a predominately white institutional archive to give …
