A History Of The Development And Objectives Of The Lds Church News Section Of The Deseret News, Paul T. Roberts
A History Of The Development And Objectives Of The Lds Church News Section Of The Deseret News, Paul T. Roberts
Theses and Dissertations
The Church News supplement to the Deseret News has been part of the Salt Lake City newspaper for over fifty years. It has evolved from a weekly eight-page tabloid religious section of the daily newspaper to a weekly magazine of feature articles, photographs, editorials and news of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints.
An historical study of the Church News has not been done previously. Hence, the intent of this study is to observe how the Church News has served its purposes and goals over its history. The study briefly outlines how the publication has developed and will …

Papyrology And Roman History: 1956–1980, James G. Keenan
Papyrology And Roman History: 1956–1980, James G. Keenan
Classical Studies: Faculty Publications and Other Works
The papyri of the Roman Empire have not yet been subjected to the kinds of systematic scholarly enterprises to which the Ptolemaic papyri have been subjected. There is, for example, no comprehensive prosopography comparable to the Prosopographia Ptolemaica, and it is, I think, senseless to start one. What the student of the Roman imperial period has at his disposal is lists of assorted officials, functionaries, and military personnel. Among those compiled in the generation under discussion (1956-1980) there may be mentioned, by way of example, Bureth's collection of imperial titulatures; Mussies' supplement to Henne's 1935 listing of nome strategi; Reinmuth's …
South Dakota Populism, Terrence J. Lindell
South Dakota Populism, Terrence J. Lindell
Open Access Master's Theses (through 2010)
In the chapters that follow, the first two set the stage for the Populist movement, dealing with the Great Dakota Boom, the bust that succeeded it, and the growth of the Farmer’s Alliance. The next three chapters recount the course of the populist movement during the 1890s, dealing with its rise, its long years of defeat, and finally fusion and demise. Chapter Six is a study of the administration of South Dakota’s Populist governor, focusing on the barriers to effective reform that he met during his two terms. The final chapter applies some of the techniques used by quantitative historians in …

The Historical-Critical Method- Dividing Wall Between Moderates And Conservatives In The Lutheran Church-Missouri Synod Controversy, Jose Fuliga
Doctor of Theology Dissertation
There are, without question, theological and non-theological differences between the Moderates and Conservatives which are not directly related to the former's use of historical criticism. The role politics has played in the controversy cannot be denied. The differences regarding the practice of unionism, ecumenism, close communion, church polity, and even Synodical policies toward foreign missions have been controverted issues. But the focus of this study will be confined to verifying whether the use of historical criticism is indeed the dividing wall, between Moderates and Conservatives. This research shall furthermore probe if the Moderates' hermeneutical presupposition -- the Law-Gospel reductionism restrains …

"The Wyclyf" — Thrills And Dangers Of Editing A Medieval Text, Allen D. Breck
Quidditas
In 1983 we shall be observing the six hundredth anniversary of the death of one of England's great contributors, along with William of Ockham and John Duns Scotus, to the thought, learning, and literature of the fourteenth century. John Wyclyf died at the comparatively advanced age oof sixty-four after two years' illness attendant upon a stroke, on St. Sylvester's day, December 31, 1384. He had been stricken a second time while hearing Mass said by his curate in his parish church at Lutterworth, some thirteen miles northeast of Coventry. We know nothing about his burial, save that in accordance with …

The Unambiguity Of Aristotelian Being, Jaakko Hintikka
The Unambiguity Of Aristotelian Being, Jaakko Hintikka
The Society for Ancient Greek Philosophy Newsletter
In this paper, I shall try to enhance our understanding of Aristotle's thought by relating it to certain contemporary problems and insights of philosophical logicians. One of the most central current issues in philosophical logic is a challenge to a hundred-year old dogma. Almost all twentieth-century philosophers in English-speaking countries have followed Frege and Russell and claimed that the words for being in natural languages — "is," "ist," ἔστι etc.— are ambiguous between the is of predication, the is of existence, the is of identity, and the generic is. The significance of this ambiguity thesis has not been limited to …

A Sourcebook For The Interpretation Of Traditional Dance By Outdoor Museums And Historic Sites, Jan Alm
A Sourcebook For The Interpretation Of Traditional Dance By Outdoor Museums And Historic Sites, Jan Alm
Library Faculty & Staff Publications
Folklife scholars often produce work which is valuable to outdoor museums and historic sites. Folklife scholars deal with functional, contextual, emic, and interdisciplinary studies--all approaches which produce valuable interpretive data for museums and sites. This thesis is an example of folklife work designed for use in the museum field.
Outdoor museums and historic sites are increasingly involved with the interpretation of social and emotional life. Because it is a social and emotional event, dance can be a valuable part of this interpretation.
Sites and museums developing programs of traditional dance interpretation may find it helpful to follow several steps: 1.) …

The Bungalow Aesthetic: The Social Implications Of A Nationwide Phenomenon Viewed From The Perspective Of A Small Town, Janice Williams Rutherford
The Bungalow Aesthetic: The Social Implications Of A Nationwide Phenomenon Viewed From The Perspective Of A Small Town, Janice Williams Rutherford
Dissertations and Theses
During the first two decades of the twentieth century, a new aesthetic in the domestic architecture of middle-class America emerged. A new style of house, the bungalow, was introduced soon after the turn of the century, and within a very few years, became the most popular building style among Americans who were buying moderately-priced homes. The bungalow was a low, horizontal style of house with deep overhanging eaves and large porches, usually built of natural, textured materials. Its floor plan was notable for opening interior space. The research problem addressed in this study was to determine what factors popularized the …
Was Jesus The Priestly Messiah A Study Of The New Testament's Teaching Of Jesus' Priestly Office Against The Background Of Jewish Hopes For A Priestly Messiah, Jonathan Grothe
Doctor of Theology Dissertation
Thus, on a narrower scale, this study aims to test an hypothesis in one area of New Testament Christology and to present conclusions regarding it. Since the question involves also the relationship of Judaism to the New Testament, this study also aspires to make a contribution to the ongoing task of methodically examining and carefully describing that relationship. Inasmuch as a major section of the study deals with the Epistle to the Hebrews, it also includes among its goals the attempt to add to the current discussion of the proper background and purpose of Hebrews.
As an historical and exegetical …

An Archaeological Survey Of A Portion Of The Choke Canyon Reservoir Area In Mcmullen And Live Oak Counties, Texas, Alston V. Thoms, John L. Montgomery, Alice W. Portnoy
Index of Texas Archaeology: Open Access Gray Literature from the Lone Star State
An intensive cultural resource survey was carried out on approximately 2544 hectares (6285 acres) of the proposed Choke Canyon Reservoir by the Cultural Resources Institute (CRI) of Texas Tech University from August through October 1977. The project was undertaken in response to needs of the Bureau of Reclamation. This report is one of a multivolume study.'concerning the area's cultural resources. During the 1977 survey, 113 archaeological sites, 42 low density artifact scatters, and five isolated finds were located and recorded. A no-collection policy was maintained, except isolated finds. In the late fall 1977, 15 of the recorded sites were subjected …

Guerrero, Coahuila, Mexico: A Guide To The Town And Missions, Jack D. Eaton
Index of Texas Archaeology: Open Access Gray Literature from the Lone Star State
This guide to the town and missions at Guerrero, Coahuila, is based largely upon the research efforts of the Gateway Project, an archaeological and ethnohistoric study of the area conducted by the Center for Archaeological Research, The University of Texas at San Antonio during 1975 to 1977. Because the project was dealing with historic mission buildings which housed native American inhabitants of the region, the project had both historic and prehistoric aspects. The Indians gathered into the missions where inheritors of the native cultural tradition began at least 11,000 years ago. Therefore, an archaeological survey of prehistoric sites in the …
Concepts In American Local History: Community In Winder, Idaho, Lorine S. Goodwin
Concepts In American Local History: Community In Winder, Idaho, Lorine S. Goodwin
Theses and Dissertations
Recently the need for a more clearly defined structural basis for American local history has become acute. Concepts used in national history often fall short of the needs of local history. As a result, both professionals and amateurs are producing a rash of community histories without the benefit of adequate guidelines.
This thesis draws together a number of concepts useful in the development of American local history as a viable academic field of study. It tests these concepts in presenting the history of community in Winder, a small, rural population set in southeastern Idaho.
