Jesus And The Gentiles In The Gospel Of Matthew: A Historical Study Of The Redemption Motif, Young Jin Kim May 1992

Jesus And The Gentiles In The Gospel Of Matthew: A Historical Study Of The Redemption Motif, Young Jin Kim

Doctor of Theology Dissertation

To obtain the proper understanding of Jesus' relation to the Gentiles in the Gospel of Matthew, the following objectives should be met: our study shall deal with (1) the Old Testament passages pertinent to our subject, (2) every Matthean passage which provides explicit or implicit information on our theme, (3) the salvation-historical significance of the text, and (4) the total context of the Gospel.

A form-critical approach with its presuppositions is not in order for our study since this approach fails to meet objectives three and four. A redaction-critical approach which has been the dominant discipline in recent Matthean scholarship …

Administrating Ministry: The Use Of Strategic Planning And Management In A Ministry Setting, Paul Metzler May 1992

Administrating Ministry: The Use Of Strategic Planning And Management In A Ministry Setting, Paul Metzler

Doctor of Ministry Major Applied Project

"ADMINISTRATING MINISTRY:The Use of Strategic Planning and Managementin a Ministry Setting"This project explores strategic planning and management (SPM) as an administrative theory which can enable effective ministry. Derived from the world of corporate business management, the SPM model is defined as a disciplined effort to produce fundamental decisions and actions that guide what an organization is, does, and how it plans its future. Examination of key biblical understandings of leadership and administration, as well as SPM's underlying assumptions, support its theological appropriateness. The use of SPM in the setting of theGordon D. Hoople Institute of the Onondaga Pastoral Counseling Center …

Research for this thesis drew on the network of Deaf Mormon wards/branches, newspapers, magazines, books, unpublished documents, personal collections, and oral interviews to illustrate the religious activities engaged in by deaf Latter-day Saints at the national and local levels during the mid and late twentieth century America. The study focused on the theological perspectives, church participation, and personal experiences of deaf Mormons with a special focus on the accommodations the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day ·Saints has for the deaf populace. This special attention was used to examine and demonstrate the influence and attractions the Mormon religion has for …

The Priesthood Of All The Baptized:An Exegetical And Theological Investigation, Thomas Winger May 1992

The Priesthood Of All The Baptized:An Exegetical And Theological Investigation, Thomas Winger

Master of Sacred Theology Thesis

For all the emphasis placed on the "priesthood of all believers" as an article of faith, very little critical research has been done into its exegetical, dogmatic, and historical foundations. In his monumental study, John Elliott notes that a detailed exegetical treatment of 1Peter 2 had never before been done in the history of Christianity. 2 Yet he declines any attempt to relate his conclusions to a "dogma" of priesthood. The most extensive historical study, undertaken in two volumes by Cyril Eastwood, attempts to trace the influence of this doctrine in the history of the church, but it fails to …

From Welfare To Liberation: A Socio-Historical Analysis Of The Animal Rights Movement, Linda J. Rynbrandt Apr 1992

From Welfare To Liberation: A Socio-Historical Analysis Of The Animal Rights Movement, Linda J. Rynbrandt

Masters Theses

This thesis is a socio-historical analysis of the animal rights social movement in the United States of America at the end of the 19th and 20th centuries. The theoretical model is resource mobilization theory, especially McCarthy and Zald's (1973) entrepreneurial model. The method, which contrasts this social movement at two points in time, is informed by Skocpol's (1984) interpretative historical sociology. In particular, leadership, ideology, organizational structure, and strategy tactics in both eras are examined. Comparing the two manifestations of animal rights protest, the data show that: (a) Leadership and organizational structure, though similar in many respects, are more professionalized …

A Canonical-Critical Study Of Selected Traditions In The Book Of Joel, David D. Pettus Feb 1992

A Canonical-Critical Study Of Selected Traditions In The Book Of Joel, David D. Pettus

Liberty Baptist Theological Seminary (1973-2015)

The book of Joel presents a myriad of problems to the honest interpreter. For example, the inability to date firmly the book makes it exceedingly difficult to find an original meaning for the work. In addition, the failure of scholars to come to a consensus on the connection between the locust plague and the Day of Yahweh theme in the book exacerbates the interpretive problems further. This dissertation is an attempt to elucidate the meaning of the book of Joel by focusing on the Day of Yahweh and its subthemes in the book via the methodology of canonical criticism. Canonical …

Book Chapter: The Return Of The Repressed: Saussure And Swift On Language And History, Tony Crowley Jan 1992

Book Chapter: The Return Of The Repressed: Saussure And Swift On Language And History, Tony Crowley

Scripps Faculty Publications and Research

Departures in linguistics are nothing new of course. Ideas come and go, "facts" appear and disappear along with the theories which first brought them to light, trends shift and alter. The language used to describe the history of the field, a field which once constituted a new departure in its own right, is replete with the language of innovation: "breakthrough," "advance," "progress," and even "revolution" are familiar enough epithets. In the face of all this novelty then the question must be, how to do something new? The answer which is proposed here might appear somewhat odd for the intention is …

Christianity And 'Other Religions': Contributions From The Work Of F. Max, Ronald Neufeldt Jan 1992

Christianity And 'Other Religions': Contributions From The Work Of F. Max, Ronald Neufeldt

Journal of Hindu-Christian Studies

The history of Christian Thought in the West is not notable for its efforts to come to grips with the claims of other religious traditions, except for the purpose of proselyizatioin, i.e. the concern to save souls. The attitude taken by Christian Churches toward other religions has often been labelled as exclusivism. In its extreme form its attitude has found expression in the assertion that among all peoples of the world, Christians alone have a corner on the truth.

Dating An Ill-Fated Journey: Synesius, Ep. 5, Jacqueline Long Jan 1992

Dating An Ill-Fated Journey: Synesius, Ep. 5, Jacqueline Long

Classical Studies: Faculty Publications and Other Works

Synesius passed his life as one of the most important men in Cyrene. He was born into a wealthy family that claimed descent from the founding Heraclids (e.g. Catast. 303A). On one occasion he was chosen as Cyrene's ambassador to the imperial court at Constantinople. During this period the revolts of Tribigild and Gamnas toppled Eutropius from seemingly absolute power behind Arcadius' throne; Synesius watched national politics unfold from a distinctive perspective, which he recorded in his De Regno and De Providentia. They are unquestionably important historical sources, but interpretation of them is complicated by the erudition and Neoplatonic philosophy …

Responds to a recent article by Peter Shillingsburg (in Studies in Bibliography , 1991)on the taxonomy of authorial revision or textual versions, arguing that for critical, biographical and historical study the editor (and interpreter) is constrained in the choice of variant by the purpose for which the text is being used. Examples are drawn from Victorian authors, including Alfred Tennyson, specifically the versions of Maud, and John Henry Newman, specifically successive versions of what became The Idea of the University. Originally presented at a symposium on Shillingsburg's article at the Textual and Bibliographical Studies Section, South Atlantic Modern …

A Comparative Study Of 'People' In The Old Testament And The Minjung Concept, Hyun Sup Um May 1991

A Comparative Study Of 'People' In The Old Testament And The Minjung Concept, Hyun Sup Um

Master of Sacred Theology Thesis

The purpose of this study is to find out whether or not the concept of עִס in the Old Testament is the same as it is used in Minjung theology. Therefore the first part of this thesis will deal with outside influences, such as secular theology, the theology of hope, liberation theology, process theology, and theology of history on Minjung theologians, specifically on these three: Jung Choon Kim, Hee Suh Moon, and Joon Suh Park. All three insist that the origin of Israel was the Habiru. Therefore the origin of עִס (Israel) in the Old Testament will also be treated. …

The History And Influence Of Black Baseball In The United States And Indianapolis, Scott Clayton Bower Mar 1991

The History And Influence Of Black Baseball In The United States And Indianapolis, Scott Clayton Bower

Undergraduate Honors Thesis Collection

When Americans discuss the history of baseball, names like Lou Gehrig, Babe Ruth, Ty Cobb, Connie Mack, and Walter Johnson are mentioned. But what about men like Rube Foster, Buck Leonard, C. I. Taylor, Josh Gibson, and Oscar Charleston? Most American baseball fans know little about black baseball and the lives of black players. A study of black baseball, focusing on the Negro leagues, answers some of the questions baseball fans and historians might ask out of ignorance. How did baseball become segregated? How did the Negro leagues evolve? What was life like for black baseball players? How was the …
