Inventing The Middle Ages, Glenn W. Olsen
Inventing The Middle Ages, Glenn W. Olsen
Quidditas
Norman Cantor seems to have decided, as a kind of perpetual outsider (in spite of his Princeton and Oxford education), that he has nothing to lose by telling it all. Of his Inventing the Middle Ages: The Lives, Works, and Ideas of the Great Medievalists of the Twentieth Century (William Morrow and Company, New York 1991), Lee Patterson says accurately on the dust jacket: 'Intriguing, informative, irritating, and vastly entertaining, Inventing the Middle Ages will rattle lots of cages'. I am not sure that this book has raised Cantor's status in the eyes of very many practicing medievalists, and indeed …

Music, The Master Communicator, Patricia Jean Lee
Music, The Master Communicator, Patricia Jean Lee
Theses
Music has been a universal language through time. It communicates the very essence of life, reflecting the heart, the soul and the mind of man. This study, based on research, testing and observation , seeks to establish that music is capable of communicating and educating; that music is not only relevant as an art form for the purpose of enjoyment and entertainment, but that music is a practical and acceptable means of expression and communication. To accomplish this goal , the paper discusses the history of communication, focusing on various types of communication to establish common elements, laying the foundation …
St. Juan De Dios, 1495-1550 The Patron Saint Of Nurses, Christopher Churchouse
St. Juan De Dios, 1495-1550 The Patron Saint Of Nurses, Christopher Churchouse
Theses : Honours
For any profession to develop, grow and plan for the future, it is imperative that all members know from whence they have come. Nurses', however, do not generally consider this to be an important aspect to their professional development, and hence have focused more on empirical or experimental research. Whilst much literature has been written on nursing history, it has focused primarily on its founding women and its inception from the mid nineteenth century when a more structured training evolved. This study, therefore, goes beyond this period of time and examines a man who played an equally important role in …
Education Censorship And Teachers, Larry Lowther, Earl Glauert, Karen Blair
Education Censorship And Teachers, Larry Lowther, Earl Glauert, Karen Blair
History Faculty Scholarship
This volume, produced by three members of the Central Washington University Department of History, on the occasion of the school's centennial, cannot document all the stories of the many thousands of students who have earned degrees here. The lists of courses they took, clubs they joined, professors who introduced them to new subjects for consideration, administrators who shaped the programs and policies, staff people whose services supported their progress, buildings that housed their residential and scholarly activities, would be interminable. Still, the chapters here succeed at recovering a wide variety of evocative images. Some material deals with the earliest days …

Papyrology And Byzantine Historiography, James G. Keenan
Papyrology And Byzantine Historiography, James G. Keenan
Classical Studies: Faculty Publications and Other Works
Egypt of late antiquity, often referred to as Byzantine Egypt, was for years the outcast of papyrological studies. It is only recently, partly in the wake of studies on the reign of Diocletian and his fourth-century successors, that the keen interest of papyrologists and historians in Egypt of the Ptolemaic and Roman periods has carried over into the later period. Perhaps responsible for the old indifference was, as Remondon suggested a generation ago, the scholar's prejudice against those periods that are judged decadent; or, to put the matter as Johan Huizinga did in the preface to his 1919 classic, The …
An Analysis Of The Utilization Of Power By Florence Nightingale 1856-1872, Louise C. Selanders
An Analysis Of The Utilization Of Power By Florence Nightingale 1856-1872, Louise C. Selanders
Dissertations
This historical analysis sought to determine the types of power utilized by Florence Nightingale while providing leadership to major reforms and how these power acts were implemented- The scope of the study was her productive post- Crimean years from 1856 through 1872. Events which were examined included the reform of the health of the British Army including the Royal Commission, the establishment of modem, secular nursing education and the establishment of public health standards in India during British colonization.
The power acts were examined relative to the constituents of power defined by Dahl (1957). The source of power contained subsets …

Getting The Facts Straight: New Views Of Mexico And Its Peoples In Recently Adopted U.S. History Textbooks In Texas, Linda K. Salvucci
Getting The Facts Straight: New Views Of Mexico And Its Peoples In Recently Adopted U.S. History Textbooks In Texas, Linda K. Salvucci
History Faculty Research
Every six years, the Texas State Board of Education holds public hearings as part of the complex process of "adopting" or approving primary and secondary school textbooks for free distribution to over 1,100 public school districts. Publishers vie to capture a share of this extremely large and lucrative market by placing their products in one of usually five approved slots in each subject category. The significance of the textbook approval process extends far beyond the borders of the Lone Star State, since sales of titles successful in Texas often soar nationwide as well. In an interesting coincidence, the commemoration of …

A. Philip Randolph And Boston's African-American Railroad Worker, James R. Green, Robert C. Hayden
Trotter Review
On October 8, 1988, a group of retired Pullman car porters and dining car waiters gathered in Boston's Back Bay Station for the unveiling of a larger-than-life statue of A. Philip Randolph. During the 1920s and 1930s, Randolph was a pioneering black labor leader who led the Brotherhood of Sleeping Car Porters. He came to be considered the "father of the modern civil rights movement" as a result of his efforts to desegregate World War II defense jobs and the military services. Randolph's importance as a militant leader is highlighted by a quote inscribed on the base of the statue …

The Federalist Revolt: An Affirmation Or Denial Of Popular Sovereignty?, Paul R, Hanson
Scholarship and Professional Work - LAS
After nearly two centuries of relative neglect by historians, the Federalist revolt of 1793 finally is receiving the attention it deserves. Book-length studies now exist for each of the main Federalist cities, and several articles have considered various aspects of either Federalism or the Federalist revolt.1 We are thus in a position to begin a fuller and more informed evaluation of the character and significance of the Federalist revolt...

"Living Words": Samuel Taylor Coleridge And The Genesis Of The Oed, James C. Mckusick
English Faculty Publications
Today we are at a crucial moment in the evolution of the Oxford English Dictionary, as the dog-eared volumes are withdrawn from library shelves and replaced by the sleek second edition of 1989. This new OED bears witness to the continuing relevance and utility of the "New English Dictionary on Historical Principles" for the current generation of literary scholars. The event of its publication provides an opportunity for a fresh historical perspective on the circumstances surrounding the production of the original OED, which was published between 1884 and 1928 in a series of 125 fascicles and bound up into those …
