"A Conflict Of Truth With Error": Southern Preachers, Their Worldview, And Sectional Tensions, 1830-1865, Timothy A. Ehrhardt Apr 2002

"A Conflict Of Truth With Error": Southern Preachers, Their Worldview, And Sectional Tensions, 1830-1865, Timothy A. Ehrhardt

Masters Theses

White evangelical preachers of the antebellum era presented the American South with a cosmology that was rooted in the Bible as God's revelation to all humans, with God as sovereign over a strict social hierarchy that placed the white male as household head, and women, children, and black slaves (in that order) as subordinates. This cosmology contributed to sectional tensions, as southern pastors were at the forefront of advocating a proslavery worldview, and supported secession from the Union and war as an act of purification from northern infidels who did not endorse the ministers' brand of biblical literalism.

Southern clergymen …

Ladies' Library Associations Of Michigan: Women, Reform, And Use Of Public Space, Sharon Carlson

Dissertations

This dissertation investigates the ladies' library associations in Southwestern Michigan from the middle nineteenth century through the early twentieth century to explore the impact of these organizations as agents of reform and in shaping public space. Ladies' library association records provide a major component of this study. Association records, consisting of constitutions, bylaws, minutes, treasurer records, book catalogs, yearbooks, and published reports yield valuable information to analyze and interpret the activities of ladies' library associations. Plat maps, panoramic maps, photographs, architectural drawings, and tax records offer evidence about the built environment and material culture of ladies' library associations. The actual …

Connecting Composition And Literature Through The Rhetorical Situation, Maria Luisa Douglas Notarangelo Jan 2002

Connecting Composition And Literature Through The Rhetorical Situation, Maria Luisa Douglas Notarangelo

Theses Digitization Project

This thesis suggests that the idea of the rhetorical situation-a work's text (or language), author, audience, and social context-can serve as a connection between literature, literary theory, and composition studies. Criticisms of Emily Dickinson's Poem 754 are presented, and each is categorized according to the element of the rhetorical situation upon which it focuses.

Tritheism And Divine Person As Center Of Consciousness With A Comparative Appraisal Of Jürgen Moltmann And William Hill As Test Cases., Byunghoon Kim Jan 2002

Tritheism And Divine Person As Center Of Consciousness With A Comparative Appraisal Of Jürgen Moltmann And William Hill As Test Cases., Byunghoon Kim

CTS PhD Doctoral Dissertations

Together with the retrieval of the doctrine of the Trinity in the latter half of the twentieth century, a controversy over tritheism took place centering around the notion of divine persons as centers of consciousness. Since Barth, the theological landscape has been divided into opponents and supporters of the notion of divine persons as centers of consciousness. Opponents charge supporters with tritheism; supporters accuse opponents of modalism. The reciprocal criticism demands that we re-examine tritheism and modalism. The task that this dissertation chooses is that of understanding tritheism. The dissertation intends to accomplish three things: (1) to suggest a definition …

Slovak Standard Language Development In The 15th–18th Centuries: A Diglossia Approach, Mark Richard Lauersdorf Jan 2002

Slovak Standard Language Development In The 15th–18th Centuries: A Diglossia Approach, Mark Richard Lauersdorf

Linguistics Faculty Publications

This study provides a sketch of Slovak standard language development during the pre-codification period (15th-18th centuries) within a diglossia framework.  The focus is on the earlier periods of the 15th and 16th centuries – the earliest time from which there is significant direct documentation of patterns of indigenous language use in Slovakia in the form of a larger corpus of texts written in a Slavic language (be it Czech or mixed Czech-Slovak).  The investigation indicates a 15th-16th century situation of Czech-Slovak diglossia that is gradually resolved in the course of the 17th-18th centuries through increasing development and use of a …

A Methodology For Streamlining Historical Research: The Analysis Of Technical And Scientific Publications, John T. Battalio Jan 2002

A Methodology For Streamlining Historical Research: The Analysis Of Technical And Scientific Publications, John T. Battalio

English Literature Faculty Publications and Presentations

This article provides a framework for organizing and structuring the research of historical researchers who analyze technical and scientific publications. Because historical research spans both decades and centuries, an effective research methodology is essential. The framework consists of a multifaceted 10-step method for studying the written discourse of scientific and technical communication, specifically for interpreting historical data obtained from articles published in technical and scientific journals. The method is a reliable means for making sense of the enormous body of data that awaits historical researchers in the volumes of scientific and technical discourse already published.

Collective Memory Of Vichy : Moulin, Pétain, And The Vél' D'Hiv', Kathryn W. Bondy

Honors Theses

Following World War II, European countries that had been devastated by the war slowly began the task of rebuilding. This reconstruction did not only involve the restoration of buildings and governments, but also of national psyches, as most European nations had recently experienced a traumatic period in their history. France was no exception. Since the liberation of Paris in August of 1944, France had been attempting to regain a sense of normality that it had not had under the World War II government of Vichy. As a result of signing an armistice with Germany on June 22, 1940, France was …

Echoes Of The Lost Cause : Civil War Reverberations In Mississippi From 1865 To 2001, Sally Leigh Mcwhite

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Scholars of the Lost Cause have tended to end their examinations of the Confederate commemorative movement before the 1920s. Citing a variety of indicators that range from veterans' mortality rates to national reconciliation, these historians have assumed that the Lost Cause became increasingly irrelevant in southern society. Yet, veterans organizations and their auxiliaries put a great deal of energy into constructing an historical interpretation that would vindicate their actions to future generations. This dissertation therefore extends the examination of the Lost Cause movement throughout the twentieth century. Limiting the geographical scope of the research to a state study of Mississippi …

The Cemetery Record Of William D. Huntington, Nauvoo Sexton, Fred E. Woods Jan 2002

The Cemetery Record Of William D. Huntington, Nauvoo Sexton, Fred E. Woods

Faculty Publications

When John Butler first visited Commerce (later known as Nauvoo) he recalled, "I asked Brother Joseph what kind of a place it was. He said it was a low, marshy, wet, damp and nasty place, but that if we went to work and improved it, it would become more healthy and the Lord would bless it for our sakes." The Prophet Joseph Smith also stated, "the name of our city (Nauvoo) is of Hebrew origin, and signifies a beautiful situation, or place, carrying with it, also, the idea of rest; and is truly descriptive of the most delightful situation... Some Theological Implications Of Two Catholic Responses In Care And Prevention To The Hiv/Aids Pandemic In Korea And The Philippines, Yong-Seong Roh Jan 2002

Some Theological Implications Of Two Catholic Responses In Care And Prevention To The Hiv/Aids Pandemic In Korea And The Philippines, Yong-Seong Roh

Theses

Dialogues with two Catholic institutions in Korea and the Philippines concerned with those suffering from AIDS and working to prevent the spread of HIV/AIDS highlight the ambiguities and contradictions in both current knowledge and attitudes. Among the general public and church members there is considerable misunderstanding about the issues both the nature of the disease and the Church's moral teaching. Catholic institutions and secular based NGOs reveal the importance of interactive social networks in promoting positive responses in the face of widespread prejudice and stigmatization.

Suffering arising from HIV/AIDS presents a challenge to promote an ethics of relieving the misery …

Spirit Matter(S): Post-Dualistic Representations Of Spirituality In Fiction By Walker Percy, Toni Morrison And Gloria Naylor, Likourgos James Vassiliou Jan 2002

Spirit Matter(S): Post-Dualistic Representations Of Spirituality In Fiction By Walker Percy, Toni Morrison And Gloria Naylor, Likourgos James Vassiliou

LSU Doctoral Dissertations

Spirit Matter(s): Post-Dualism Representations of Spirituality in Fiction by Walker Percy, Toni Morrison and Gloria Naylor, examines the ways in which these authors have presented spirituality in The Moviegoer, Song of Solomon, and Mama Day respectively. In these works, spirituality is a need for connection among humans in this world, rather than a notion that points to dualistic views of the spiritual and the material as two different realms. Through this perspective on spirituality as a reality of the physical world, the political and socio-economic problems of the world are not—nor can they be—set aside in favor of the spiritual …

Subversive Aspects Of American Musical Theatre, Donald Elgan Whittaker Iii Jan 2002

Subversive Aspects Of American Musical Theatre, Donald Elgan Whittaker Iii

LSU Doctoral Dissertations

Critical discourse regarding musical theatre takes, for the most part, the form of a profound silence, due presumably to a dismissal of the genre as simplistic and insubstantial. Not only have the elements of musical theatre been present in the majority of theatrical history, but many of the greatest theories regarding theatre have included these elements, including Brecht and Wagner. Musicals have also often concerned themselves with the Other, centering and sympathizing him/her in a manner unavailable to non-musical works. The Others that have thus been positioned are often delineated from hegemonic groups which are concretely those in power, but …

Liberty And Authority In Colonial Georgia, 1717-1776, Andrew C. Lannen Jan 2002

Liberty And Authority In Colonial Georgia, 1717-1776, Andrew C. Lannen

LSU Doctoral Dissertations

Few historical works examine the society and politics of both the Trustee and royal periods of Colonial Georgia. This dissertation highlights the central theme that binds the two eras together: the delicate balance between liberty and authority. Colonists believed that the greatest threat to liberty was the potential for the mother country to acquire undue power. To guard against that danger, settlers supported the establishment of strong local sources of authority within the colony that would act as a check against excessive imperial power. The Trustees initially used land, slavery, and trade restrictions to deny political and economic power to …

Review Of The Social Teaching Of Phillips Brooks, Robert B. Slocum Jan 2002

Review Of The Social Teaching Of Phillips Brooks, Robert B. Slocum

Theology Faculty Research and Publications

Episcopalian minister Phillips Brooks (1835-93) is widely recognized to be one of the great preachers in American church history. Slocum identifies the major themes for Brooks in terms of how Christians should best live in relation to others as an expression of living in saving relationship with God. Brooks's sermons are optimistic and encouraging, but they are also personal, practical, and specific.

New Voices In The Tradition: Medieval Hagiography Revisited, Marie Anne Mayeski Jan 2002

New Voices In The Tradition: Medieval Hagiography Revisited, Marie Anne Mayeski

Theological Studies Faculty Works

The author argues for the use of hagiographical texts to expand the evidence for the theological tradition, precisely during the early Middle Ages when more obvious sources are wanting. Her thesis is that there is sound basis for reading the lives of the saints through the lens of doctrinal theology. After giving this evidence, she then exemplifies the value of such a reading by an ecclesiological analysis of Rudolf of Saxony’s life of St. Leoba, a companion of St. Boniface.]

Theistic Activism And The Euthyphro Dilemma, David Baggett Jan 2002

Theistic Activism And The Euthyphro Dilemma, David Baggett

Faculty Dissertations

My dissertation focuses on the Euthyphro question, from one of the Socratic dialogues, understood in terms of the following dilemma posed against theistic ethics: (1) Either what is good/right is moral because God commands it, or it is not. (2) If what is good/right is moral because God commands it, then the good/right is arbitrary and vacuous. (3) If what is good/right is moral for reasons other than that God commands it, then God is superfluous from the standpoint of morality. (4) So, either the good/right is arbitrary and vacuous or God is superfluous to morality.

The dilemma is really …

On The ‘‘Misogyny’’ Of Jean-Jacques Rousseau: The Letter To D’Alembert In Historical Context, Helena Rosenblatt Jan 2002

On The ‘‘Misogyny’’ Of Jean-Jacques Rousseau: The Letter To D’Alembert In Historical Context, Helena Rosenblatt

Publications and Research

Evidence suggests that the feminist consensus on Jean-Jacques Rousseau “misogyny” is breaking down.New studies are emerging that bring to light the many sympathetic portrayals of women in Rousseau’s works and the important role he ascribed to women within the family. Some modern feminists are even finding ways of reading Rousseau that speak to women’s concerns today. Overturning the notion that Rousseau was an arch-misogynist will be an uphill battle, however, given how very widespread it has become. Moreover, before we can arrive at a coherent and convincing appraisal of Rousseau’s views on women, a curious paradox needs to be addressed: …

The Historical Background, Interconnected Development And Integration Of The Doctrines Of The Sanctuary, The Sabbath, And Ellen G. White's Role In Sabbatarian Adventism From 1844 To 1849, Merlin D. Burt Jan 2002

The Historical Background, Interconnected Development And Integration Of The Doctrines Of The Sanctuary, The Sabbath, And Ellen G. White's Role In Sabbatarian Adventism From 1844 To 1849, Merlin D. Burt

Dissertations

The topic . The doctrines of the sanctuary and the Sabbath, along with Ellen White's prophetic role, progressively evolved and integrated during the five years following the October 1844 Millerite time expectation and were the fundamental elements in the formation of the Sabbatarian Adventist movement and ultimately the Seventh-day Adventist Church.

The purpose . The purpose of the study was to situate the interconnected development of the sanctuary, the Sabbath, and Ellen White's prophetic ministry within the ferment of Adventist ideas and events, show the immediate theological climate, and give a connected progression of Bridegroom (or Shut Door) Adventism and …
