Spatial Changes Of Pilgrimage Centers In Pilgrimage Studies – Review And Contribution To Future Research, Justyna Liro, Izabela Sołjan, Elżbieta Bilska-Wodecka
International Journal of Religious Tourism and Pilgrimage
Pilgrimages and pilgrimage centres are a subject of research often undertaken from the perspective of geographic sciences. Geographical research on pilgrimage movement and sanctuaries is important due to its focus on the spatial aspect. This article analyses the current state of research on pilgrimage centres. The main trends of the current studies include: the phenomenon of pilgrimage in terms of religion, society, culture and tourism; as well as its impact, including on the development of the settlement and; studies of pilgrimage centres, in particular their impact on space in various spatial and temporal scales, as well as; the conclusions drawn …
Foucault And The Recommencement Of Philosophy, Javier De La Higuera
Foucault And The Recommencement Of Philosophy, Javier De La Higuera
CLCWeb: Comparative Literature and Culture
Javier de la Higuera discusses in his “Foucault and the Recommencement of Philosophy” the idea of a recommencement of philosophy that Michel Foucault has posited on several occasions, although with different meaning and intentions. This article reconstructs how he approached this in the 1960s and shows the fundamental changes that this idea of recommencement underwent in the later Foucault. In his last three years at the Collège de France, Foucault appeared to reinterpret the very idea of philosophy based on his analysis of ancient spirituality and of parrhesiastic philosophical practice. The interpretation that Gilles Deleuze gave of late Foucault, devoted …
Sanctifying Minority Status In The Himalayan Ummah: Eid Al-Ghadeer Commemorations Among The Shia In Leh, Ladakh, Rohit Singh
Sanctifying Minority Status In The Himalayan Ummah: Eid Al-Ghadeer Commemorations Among The Shia In Leh, Ladakh, Rohit Singh
HIMALAYA, the Journal of the Association for Nepal and Himalayan Studies
Drawing on ethnographic data, this article argues that the Shia in Leh, Ladakh employ religious ceremonies such as Eid al-Ghadeer to construct a sense of sacred community and a sanctified minority status within the Himalayan ummah. Religious discourses pertaining to minority-hood are central to how locals define and redefine themselves in the context of modernity in the Himalaya. Further, the ceremonial embrace of their minority status engenders discourses through which the Shia define their relationships to local Buddhists, local Sunnis, and broader global audiences.

Exploring Biomedical, Temporal, And Embodied Perspectives On The Timing Of Birth In Central Nepal, Jan Brunson, Suman Raj Tamrakar
HIMALAYA, the Journal of the Association for Nepal and Himalayan Studies
As an ANHS Senior Fellow, I began to explore the standardization of time in obstetrics and its translation into everyday practice in Nepal by analyzing the various perspectives involved in determining a woman’s ideal time of delivery and a successful pregnancy: those of laypeople, doctors, and the scholars setting the guidelines. I observed Nepali biomedical practitioners’ negotiation of multiple understandings of parturition and their strategies for overcoming the challenges of pre- and post-term births.

After The Fall: Tsuji Zennosuke And The Creation Of Bukkyōshugi Kokushi, James Mark Shields
After The Fall: Tsuji Zennosuke And The Creation Of Bukkyōshugi Kokushi, James Mark Shields
Faculty Journal Articles
Tsuji Zennosuke 辻善之助 (1877–1955), the dominant figure in Buddhist historical scholarship in Japan from the 1930s until the mid-1950s, is known to have employed a broad range of sources in order to provide a comprehensive analysis of his subject. This essay examines Tsuji’s conception of Buddhist history in relation to the emer- gence of both National Historical Studies (kokushigaku 国史学) and so-called State Shintō (kokka shintō 国家神道) and argues against the image of Tsuji as an “objec- tive historian” resistant to nationalist trends in historical scholarship. In fact, Tsuji was involved in the creation of an alternative, “Buddhistic” national history, …

Globalization And Cultural Flows: A Three-Article Dissertation Exploring Implications For Education And Culture In India, Dwight Edward Boucher
Globalization And Cultural Flows: A Three-Article Dissertation Exploring Implications For Education And Culture In India, Dwight Edward Boucher
UNLV Theses, Dissertations, Professional Papers, and Capstones
This dissertation follows a three-article format to examine ways in which distinct manifestations of globalization have engaged and manipulated education in India as colonizing initiatives. The articles are interrelated and examine historical, societal, and individual stories related to colonial and global impositions of Western epistemological, economic, and educational forms in India. The introductory chapter outlines the broad implications of globalization and globalizing narratives, and it is intended to demonstrate that while globalization has the capacity to improve the quality and equitability of lives around the world, it also has the potential to serve as a hegemonic conduit for the continuation …
Mechanisms For The Incorporation And Distribution Of Radionuclides In Near-Surface Fallout, Marc Alan Fitzgerald
Mechanisms For The Incorporation And Distribution Of Radionuclides In Near-Surface Fallout, Marc Alan Fitzgerald
UNLV Theses, Dissertations, Professional Papers, and Capstones
Fallout is the radioactive glass formed from a mixture of vaporized anthropogenic materials with proximate environmental material. These glassy byproducts constitute a compositional record of environmental materials such as soil and vapor precursors that are responsible for chemical heterogeneity in the glasses. The work of this dissertation is to untangle these different sources of compositional heterogeneity, distinguishing low-abundance vaporized anthropogenic-rich material from natural compositions, in order examine soil behavior and chemical evolution during fallout formation. Unfortunately, mixing convolutes the multivariate elemental relationships in these melts due to overlapping element abundances that might distinguish different source materials and chemical behaviors, making …
Myth And Monstrosity: Teaching Indigenous Films, Ken Derry
Myth And Monstrosity: Teaching Indigenous Films, Ken Derry
Journal of Religion & Film
The past few times that I have taught my course on religion and film I have included a number of Indigenous movies. The response from students has been entirely positive, in part because most of them have rarely encountered Indigenous cultural products of any kind, especially contemporary ones. Students also respond well to the way in which many of these films use notions of the monstrous to explore, and explode, colonial myths. Goldstone, for example, by Kamilaroi filmmaker Ivan Sen, draws on noir tropes to peel back the smiling masks of the people responsible for the mining town’s success, …

Displays Of Status And Expressiveness In Professional Profile Pictures On Linkedin And Corporate Websites: A Cross-Cultural Comparison Of China And The United States, Peter Cardon, Hongqing Li, Hanjing Shi
Global Advances in Business Communication
This research compares how Chinese and American professionals visually self-present with professional profile pictures. Three studies were conducted. In Study 1, we surveyed 310 professionals in China and 215 professionals in the United States about preferred profile picture backgrounds for professional sites, such as LinkedIn and corporate webpages. Generally, Americans opted first for grey backgrounds more so than Chinese, and Chinese opted for blue and white backgrounds more so than Americans. Chinese and Americans both preferred office pictures over outdoor settings, although Chinese were more likely to choose office settings without views. In Study 2, we evaluated CEO profile pictures …

The Bumpy Highway To Freedom: U.S. Reconstruction And The Freedmen's Bureau, Jennifer Ann Sobnosky
The Bumpy Highway To Freedom: U.S. Reconstruction And The Freedmen's Bureau, Jennifer Ann Sobnosky
Line by Line: A Journal of Beginning Student Writing
After studying the Civil War and the Reconstruction era in depth, I was required to choose one aspect of the Reconstruction era and write a historiography based on it. I researched how historians studied and interpreted the role of the Freedmen's Bureau, which was an agency established immediately after the end of the Civil War. I studied how these interpretations of the success of the Freedmen's Bureau's changed over time. I began by producing an annotated bibliography of the eight scholarly sources. I wrote three drafts and conferenced with my professor as well as the Write Place consultants. I revised …
The Lay Folks’ Catechism, Alliterative Verse, And Cursus, Ian Cornelius
The Lay Folks’ Catechism, Alliterative Verse, And Cursus, Ian Cornelius
English: Faculty Publications and Other Works
The Lay Folks’ Catechism is an English rendering of injunctions issued in 1357 by John Thoresby, Archbishop of York, setting forth the elements of Christian belief. Ever since W. W. Skeat’s treatments, the Catechism has been placed in the general orbit of alliterative verse, yet closer identifications have proved elusive. The text is now recorded in both The Index of Middle English Verse and The Index of Middle English Prose; the principal stylistic study proposes that John Gaytryge, the author of the English text, may have been influenced by the system of Latin prose rhythm known as cursus. …
Foreign Policy Of Modern Persia (Iran) And The Middle East, Seyed Mohammad Houshisadat Ph.D.
Foreign Policy Of Modern Persia (Iran) And The Middle East, Seyed Mohammad Houshisadat Ph.D.
Journal of International and Global Studies
The following article discusses modern Iranian foreign relations in the Middle East and North Africa from the rise of the Safavid dynasty up to the fall of the Pahlavi dynasty. It looks at the interplay of nationalist and ultra-nationalist variables. The nationalist factors include the beliefs system of the policymakers, interests related to political survival, the political economy, the geopolitics of modern Persia and also the geographical realm. The transnational variables consist of the global order, symmetrical and asymmetrical interdependence, and the regional systemic status. These major components are vital in modern Persia’s relationships with the regional and extra-regional players …

Continuing The Dialogue: Curriculum, Didaktik And Theories Of Knowledge, Norm Friesen
Educational Technology Faculty Publications and Presentations
Joseph Schwab’s famous remark, that the field of curriculum is ‘moribund’—no longer able ‘to …contribute significantly to the advancement of education’—has long echoed in curriculumstudies. Although its specific meaning has certainly changed, it still rings in our ears today. It now applies as much to discussions in the US and UK as it does to those in Northern Europe—where the cognate field of General Didaktik has been described as ‘quiet’ (Terhart, 2003, p. 25), or more recently, ‘dead’ (Zierer & Seel 2012, p. 16). This ‘virtual issue’ of the Journal of Curriculum Studies brings together five articles of direct relevance …

Cultivating Creation: Exploring Traditional Ecological Knowledge Of Native Song, Sara Moncada
Cultivating Creation: Exploring Traditional Ecological Knowledge Of Native Song, Sara Moncada
Dissertations, Masters Theses, Capstones, and Culminating Projects
Humanities scholarship, the result of millennia of deep reflection on the human condition, informs the practices and principles that structure the way we approach our investigation of the human experience. As we consider the ways in which the humanities canon shapes the relationship of what we include as “knowledge” and how we value it, the continued exploration of how meaning and value are perceived in traditional knowledge systems and their contributions to our current models of thinking and process is vital. Through an investigation of relationships between Native song and Traditional Ecological Knowledge (TEK), I explore the importance of Native …
How God Writes History: A Gramscian Analysis Of Religion And Nature In The Writings, Life, And Legacy Of John Muir, Daniel R. Jones
How God Writes History: A Gramscian Analysis Of Religion And Nature In The Writings, Life, And Legacy Of John Muir, Daniel R. Jones
Graduate Theses/Dissertations
Representations of John Muir, America’s most famous environmentalist, and religion have been highly variegated. A mythological figure of American environmental politics, Muir and his legacy have been an ideological apparatus for presidents, environmentalists, and naturalists performing acts of identification for themselves and their country. Furthermore, religion and environmental scholars have often used Muir as a case study for what they call “nature religion.” Lost in this myth-making labor are the politics of sacred spaces and national discourse. Italian political theorist Antonio Gramsci developed the concept of common sense and the intellectual, which this thesis uses to analyze John Muir’s poetics …
Experiences Of Upstate South Carolina Historical Preservationists: Wisdom For Cultivating Future Advocates, Steven Clay Pruitt
Experiences Of Upstate South Carolina Historical Preservationists: Wisdom For Cultivating Future Advocates, Steven Clay Pruitt
All Dissertations
Current literature has suggested that despite scholars in other fields gleaning vast amounts of experimental data to use to hone curriculum decisions and support their disciplines, researchers in social studies education have failed to look at Significant Life Experiences (SLEs) of Historical Preservationists (HPs) for the same benefit. The American Historical Association (AHA) cited a twenty-one percent dip in history majors since 2012 (Townsend, 2017), historic sites like Colonial Williamsburg have been hit by a lack of interest and visitation from the public (Tiedemann & Marsico, 2017), and many local historical associations and community museums have uncertain futures due to …

Vasco Da Gama’S Voyages To India: Messianism, Mercantilism, And Sacred Exploits, S. M. Ghazanfar
Journal of Global Initiatives: Policy, Pedagogy, Perspective
The Portuguese explorer, Vasco da Gama (1460-1524), was the first European to sail from Portugal to India. Accolades for this achievement have long obscured the messianic motivation for the 1498 voyage, “to invade, capture, vanquish, and subdue all Saracens (Muslims) and pagans and other enemies of Christ; to reduce them to perpetual slavery; to convert them to Christianity; [and] to acquire great wealth by force of arms from the Infidels,” as sanctified by various Papal Bulls, together called “the Doctrine of Discovery” (Dum Diversas, 1452; Romanus Pontifex, 1455; Inter Caetera, 1493). The other key motive in …

Assessment Of Data Collection Techniques And White-Nose Syndrome Effects On Bat Communities Of South Carolina, Katherine Dennie Teets
Assessment Of Data Collection Techniques And White-Nose Syndrome Effects On Bat Communities Of South Carolina, Katherine Dennie Teets
All Theses
White-nose syndrome (WNS), an infectious disease that has caused massive declines in bat populations since its discovery in 2006, may be indirectly affecting bat community structure. As WNS-susceptible species populations decline, WNS-resistant species may be taking over foraging niches formerly occupied by WNS-susceptible species. We hypothesized that bat communities located in WNS-positive areas in South Carolina have experienced niche partitioning relaxation. First, because some pre-WNS acoustic data were collected using different methods than those primarily used today, we examined if sampling method affected detection probabilities and our interpretation of habitat use of bats. We collected data using passive and active …

The purpose of this phenomenological study was to examine working-class graduates’ perceptions of The 7 Habits of Highly Effective Teens training. This purpose was accomplished through a qualitative analysis of data. The data was collected from interviews of graduates and teachers. Following the coding process, graduate data was then reduced to the following categories: social awareness, relationship development, teamwork, communication skills, empathy, self-awareness, and self-confidence which created the themes of interpersonal skills and intrapersonal skills. Four additional graduate themes were created from decision-making data: weighing pros and cons, prioritizing outcomes, thinking long-term, and real-life applications. Additional graduate data was provided …
Exploring How Teachers Are Assisted By Tie To Cope With Teaching And Learning Process During The Transition Period Of Curriculum Change, Godfrey Emeran Mishomari
Exploring How Teachers Are Assisted By Tie To Cope With Teaching And Learning Process During The Transition Period Of Curriculum Change, Godfrey Emeran Mishomari
Master of Education
Teaching during the transition period of curriculum change is a very challenging activity. Teachers need to be assisted by Tanzania Institute of Education (TIE) through the intended curriculum, manifested curriculum as textbooks and supported curriculum such as teacher’s guides on one hand and through provision of continuous professional development on the other hand. This should be done in order to improve their teaching efficiency on the intended curriculum and the implemented curriculum during this period and far much better improving learner’s performance as an attained curriculum by the students. This is pivotal if we are to improve the quality of …
Spatial And Temporal Structure Of A Canid Community In Nebraska, Lucia Corral Hurtado
Spatial And Temporal Structure Of A Canid Community In Nebraska, Lucia Corral Hurtado
School of Natural Resources: Dissertations, Theses, and Student Research
Understanding patterns of space-use by individuals, their distribution, and how they coexist with ecologically similar species is crucial to address various issues in ecology, evolution, conservation biology, and wildlife management. However, the study of such patterns challenging because the relationship among species and their environment is shaped by multiple ecological processes, many of which are acting at different scales, often in a hierarchical manner. In the Canidae family, for instance, where interference competition appears critical, larger species such as coyotes (Canis latrans), can often affect smaller species, such as red fox (Vulpes vulpes) and swift fox …

Photoreception And Eye Regeneration Mechanisms In Planarians, Taylor R. Birkholz
Photoreception And Eye Regeneration Mechanisms In Planarians, Taylor R. Birkholz
Dissertations
Although humans lack the ability to regenerate complete organs and limbs following amputation or injury, there are many other species (both vertebrates and invertebrates) that can. Significant advances have been made in understanding the genetic mechanisms that regulate organ regeneration in these species, including regeneration of eye tissues such as the lens and retina. Planarians are an established historical model used to study regeneration due to their ability to regenerate any organ, including the eye. With recent advances in molecular genetic analyses, planarians are now an emerging model for the specific study of eye regeneration mechanisms. Furthermore, regeneration of the …
