The Jewish Hasdai Family: A Study Of Its Administrative And Intellectual Role In Andalusia: A Historical Study, Zahraa Mohsen Hassan Al-Samawi May 2014

The Jewish Hasdai Family: A Study Of Its Administrative And Intellectual Role In Andalusia: A Historical Study, Zahraa Mohsen Hassan Al-Samawi

Uruk Journal of Human Sciences

The Hazzady family was one of the Jewish families that received favor and patronage from the Muslim rulers of Al-Andalus. This family converted to Islam and enjoyed prestige, status, and honor in Al-Andalus. What makes this subject particularly interesting and worthy of study is understanding the nature of the privileges that Jews in general, and the Hazzady family in particular, enjoyed during the reigns of Abd al-Rahman al-Nasir and his son al-Hakam, extending into the era of the Taifa kingdoms, both in political and administrative roles, as well as in the intellectual and scholarly spheres. This is especially relevant given …

An Inquiry Into The Harshness Of German Colonialism In Kaiser-Wilhelmsland, Jessica Rohr

This thesis investigates German colonialism in the 19th and 20th centuries. It also analyzes the harshness Germany employed in colonizing foreign lands and the reasons for such measures, such as perceived racial and social superiority and economic need.

The Broad, Toiling Masses In All The Continents: Anticolonial Activists And The Atlantic Charter, Mark Reeves May 2014

The Broad, Toiling Masses In All The Continents: Anticolonial Activists And The Atlantic Charter, Mark Reeves

Masters Theses & Specialist Projects

The 1941 Atlantic Charter’s references to self-determination galvanized anticolonial nationalists during the Second World War. These activists used the principles enumerated in the Atlantic Charter to frame their demands. This thesis examines three cases in the broader global context during the war, from vastly different colonial and wartime situations: British-ruled India, French-ruled Syria, and the U.S.- ruled Philippines. Across these different situations, anticolonial nationalists used the Atlantic Charter in an attempt to legitimate their own projects. This thesis shows that the elite nationalist movements examined here used a common rhetoric from the Charter, but in variable ways. Each case study …

Shinto: An Experience Of Being At Home In The World With Nature And With Others, Marcus Evans May 2014

Shinto: An Experience Of Being At Home In The World With Nature And With Others, Marcus Evans

Masters Theses & Specialist Projects

This study discloses Shinto’s experiential and existential significance and aims to articulate Shinto’s sacred objective. It shows that Shinto, by way of experience, communicates being in the world with nature and with others as a sacred objective. This suggests that Shinto, in communicating its objective, appeals to the emotions more so than to the intellect; and that Shinto’s sacred objective does not transcend the natural world of both nature and everyday affairs. This study pursues this goal by showing the experiential and existential dimensions of the three primary features of Shinto: it shows how kami (or kami-ness) is thought of …

The Rise Of Bulgarian Nationalism And Russia's Influence Upon It., Lin Wenshuang May 2014

The Rise Of Bulgarian Nationalism And Russia's Influence Upon It., Lin Wenshuang

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

The exercise of nationalism is the assertion of the political sovereignty of a community in the form of a nation-state. In the case of Bulgaria, nationalism, in practice, was a long journey towards the establishment of a Bulgarian nation-state. This dissertation aims to clarify the place and role of nationalism in the reconstruction of the Bulgarian state and to examine to what extent the development of Bulgarian nationalism was influenced by Russia at the vital stage - the 1870s, when the nation fought hard against Ottoman rule and finally achieved national liberation. My motivation for examining Russo-Bulgarian historical, political and …

The Heartland Of The Democracy: Presidential Politics In Oley Township, Berks County, Pennsylvania, 1860-64, Benjamin Petersheim

Masters Theses

Oley Township, founded in 1740, in Berks County, Pennsylvania holds a special place in the commonwealth's history because of its unique religious, political, and cultural history. With hundreds of historic buildings and its Pennsylvania German heritage, the heart of the Oley Valley continues to attract colonial and Pennsylvania German historians from great distances so that they are able to analyze and research its rich heritage. Indeed, the area was designated as a National Historic District by the National Register of Historic Places in 1983 and much of the farmland has been preserved through land trusts and historical preservation efforts. Many …

South Carolina Press Opinions Toward The Spanish-American War And Territorial Annexation Of 1898, Maria Cinquemani May 2014

South Carolina Press Opinions Toward The Spanish-American War And Territorial Annexation Of 1898, Maria Cinquemani

All Theses

Historians have contested the origins and aftermath of the Spanish-American War of 1898 for over a century. Whether in pursuit of political, economic, or humanitarian goals, the nation entered the war with Spain enthusiastically and emerged victorious, with several new annexed territories in its possession. One of the most important factors to the success of the war was the overwhelming public support, driven largely by the popular press and the famous 'yellow journalists' of the time. Despite being a brief war, historians have praised it as the event that united the North and South following the tensions of the Civil …

"They Cannot Catch Guerrillas In The Mountains Any More Than A Cow Can Catch Fleas": Guerrilla Warfare In Western Virginia, 1861-1865, Karissa Marken May 2014

"They Cannot Catch Guerrillas In The Mountains Any More Than A Cow Can Catch Fleas": Guerrilla Warfare In Western Virginia, 1861-1865, Karissa Marken

Masters Theses

The American Civil War unleashed great violence and chaos in the western mountains of Virginia. The guerrilla warfare there between Unionists and secessionists remained bitter throughout the war. No historical study has considered the entirety of pre-war western Virginia during the time it underwent a unique civil war within the context of the national struggle from 1861-1865. This study supports findings from studies of other areas of Appalachia that seek to explain the prevalence of such conflict in the mountains, challenges the myth of a Union Appalachia during the war, offers the backdrop for the political wrangling on both state …

Academics And Activism : A Comparative Study Of Contemporary Historical Writings On Same-Sex Sexuality And Lgbt Activists In The Middle East., Lauren Copeland May 2014

Academics And Activism : A Comparative Study Of Contemporary Historical Writings On Same-Sex Sexuality And Lgbt Activists In The Middle East., Lauren Copeland

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

In the past several years, there has been an abundance of U.S. news stories outlining the widespread oppression of queer people in the Middle East. At the same time, some international human rights organizations have focused all attention on LGBT asylum seekers, implying that the only course of action for queer people in the Middle East is to flee. However, contemporary historical writers on same-sex sexuality demonstrate that the history of same-sex desire and behavior in the Middle East is incredibly nuanced and has changed greatly over time. Additionally, LGBT activists in the Middle East work from within their communities …

The Forgotten Fruitway: Folk Perspectives On Fruit Farming On The Providence Bench, 1940-1980, Amy C. Maxwell May 2014

The Forgotten Fruitway: Folk Perspectives On Fruit Farming On The Providence Bench, 1940-1980, Amy C. Maxwell

All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023

As a whole, Cache Valley, Utah, residents have experienced dramatic changes in population size and economy over the last century. Providence, Utah, was once characterized by the farmers that worked the land surrounding it. The importance of agriculture has especially declined due to expanding urbanization. Despite these changes, Providence residents are aware of and celebrate their history. The purpose of this thesis is to add to the official account of local history. I attempt to capture a segment of the agricultural economy that often goes uncelebrated in current histories—fruit farming. Alongside the oft-cited sugar beet and pea production was a …

The Influences Of The American Boxer Indemnity Reparations Remissions On Chinese Higher Education, Xiaojuan Zhou May 2014

The Influences Of The American Boxer Indemnity Reparations Remissions On Chinese Higher Education, Xiaojuan Zhou

Department of Educational Administration: Dissertations, Theses, and Student Research

The purpose of this study was to consider the influences of the American Boxer Indemnity Reparations Remissions (ABIRR) on Chinese higher education. These remissions were used to establish two universities, to establish the American Boxer Indemnity Scholarship Program (ABISP) to support Chinese students’ studying in America, and to support other higher education- related projects.

This study focused on higher education considering ABISP as an individual case. The ABISP students were selected from all the students who studied in America in the corresponding period in part because of the inconsistencies of research before 1949.

Through tracking 1,152 ABISP students of Type …

The Contributions Of St. Cyprian: Perspectives On Epidemiology And Early Christianity, Iris M. Smith Apr 2014

The Contributions Of St. Cyprian: Perspectives On Epidemiology And Early Christianity, Iris M. Smith

Young Historians Conference

The Plague of 251 was nicknamed the Plague of Cyprian because of St. Cyprian of Carthage’s recordings of the epidemic. In Cyprian’s treatise ‘On Mortality’ he depicts the symptoms of the disease and offers advice to Christians on how to proceed. Cyprian offers valuable insights to the students of history by depicting a reliable account of the plague so as to build accounts of epidemiology, and as an abstract concept, Cyprian illustrates the moral battles surrounding fatality of early Christians. Records of the Plague of 251 are helpful to epidemiologists, and Cyprian's consolation tactics explain the emotions of early Christians …

Much More Than Longing: Nostalgia For Fin De Siècle Vienna, Dana Hicks Apr 2014

Much More Than Longing: Nostalgia For Fin De Siècle Vienna, Dana Hicks

Celebrating Scholarship & Creativity Day (2011-2017)

While much is known about Fin de Siècle Vienna, there has been little study of how it is understood in memory. Up to this point nostalgia for Fin de Siècle Vienna is almost entirely built from the experiences of the male Jewish intellectual. This memory is superimposed on all people who lived in Fin de Siècle Vienna. However other strains go unconsidered, such as from the arts of the age evoking wonder. There is also nostalgia from academics who interpret Fin de Siècle Vienna as a primordial ground for modernity. There is more to this past in memory than meets …

"Modern Primitive: Parody, Ambivalence, And Paradox In Paul Colin's Le Tumulte Noir", Julia Boyette Monroe Apr 2014

"Modern Primitive: Parody, Ambivalence, And Paradox In Paul Colin's Le Tumulte Noir", Julia Boyette Monroe

Theses and Dissertations

This thesis analyzes Paul Colin’s 1927 portfolio of lithographs entitled Le Tumulte Noir as an expression of the simultaneously progressive, celebratory, racist, and colonialist ideas about jazz music, dance, and blackness in Paris during the 1920s. Because the portfolio often demonstrates conflicting tropes for representing people of African American descent, for example minstrelsy vs. New Negro imagery, this thesis uses several methods for investigating the ambivalence of the artwork and the culture in which it was produced. The double-coding of meaning presented by parody, calligrams, and self-division are central to this analysis of Colin’s representations of the “Charlestonesque epidemic” in …

An Impossible Utopia: People’S Art And The Cultural Revolution, Molly E. Reynolds Apr 2014

An Impossible Utopia: People’S Art And The Cultural Revolution, Molly E. Reynolds

Student Publications

The Great Proletarian Cultural Revolution period of the People’s Republic of China (1966-1976) was crucial in the creation of modern-day China. The material culture of that period mirrors the turbulent political activity of students and the directives of the Communist Party’s central leadership during the height of the Mao Zedong personality cult. The commercial manufacture of posters, often the sole decoration available for the public and private spheres, offers strong examples of the design style of this time. The posters are not only indicative of the propagandistic fervor of production, but the aesthetic changes initiated in the visual and performing …

Germany And History In Flux: The Generational Changes In Approaching Germany's Past, Louis T. Gentilucci Apr 2014

Germany And History In Flux: The Generational Changes In Approaching Germany's Past, Louis T. Gentilucci

Student Publications

Historical memory, how a people remember the past, is in a state of almost eternal flux. By following the development of historical memory in post-war Germany, historians can better understand the generational and contemporary impact on popular history. German history illustrates the importance of this concept, as German history has a great deal of 20th century historical baggage.

Shaped By The Spirit: Spirit Christology As A Framework For Preaching Sanctification, Jonathan Rusnak Apr 2014

Shaped By The Spirit: Spirit Christology As A Framework For Preaching Sanctification, Jonathan Rusnak

Master of Sacred Theology Thesis

Rusnak, Jonathan W. "Shaped by the Spirit: Spirit Christology as a Framework for Preaching Sanctification." S.T.M. Thesis, Concordia Seminary, 2014. 128 pp.

This thesis offers an account of preaching sanctification grounded broadly in the trinitarian economy of salvation and specifically in the person and work of Jesus Christ as receiver, bearer, and giver of the Holy Spirit. Grounded in atonement theory alone, other accounts of preaching sanctification are unable to address any number of concerns that arise in the sanctified life. In addition, atonement theory alone does not ground an account of preaching sanctification that maintains the nexus indivulsus of …

Hacia Un Mapa Ex-Céntrico De Lo Afro-Hispano: Notas Sobre Un Meta-Archipiélago Desbordado, Brian J. Gunderson

Dissertations

This project proposes a study of works from 20th and 21st Century Latin American Literature and its representation of “lo afro” (blackness). While most studies have focused on the Caribbean, I am interested in working with regions of Latin America that have a history of African heritage that has either been “whitewashed” or erased since the 19th Century creation of independent nations. The major areas studied are based loosely on Quince Duncan’s notion of the Caribe Continental (the continental Caribbean): Central America (Costa Rica and Honduras), Mexico, the Pacific Coast (Ecuador and Peru), and the Southern Cone …

Ritualized Rhetoric And Historical Memory In German Foreign And Security Policy, Sara A. Hoff Apr 2014

Ritualized Rhetoric And Historical Memory In German Foreign And Security Policy, Sara A. Hoff

Graduate Program in International Studies Theses & Dissertations

Recent changes in German foreign policy behavior have led to questions about Germany's European vocation. At the center of this inquiry is Germany's struggle to resolve the intersection between historical memory and present day international responsibility, especially in cases involving the use of force. This dissertation examines how and when historical memory has influenced, shaped, and informed contemporary German foreign and security policy and rhetoric by examining cases within two policy areas: out of area operations and nuclear nonproliferation. Focusing on the case of Libya, this dissertation also considers the cases of Kosovo, Iraq, and Afghanistan. Nuclear nonproliferation, a global …

Information Thieves: Using Industrial Espionage To Examine The Development Of The Information Economy, David Schaffner Mar 2014

Information Thieves: Using Industrial Espionage To Examine The Development Of The Information Economy, David Schaffner

Honors College Theses

This paper will argue that Joseph Warren Revere's espionage trip to Europe represents a turning point in the way information used and in the way it moved about the world. This turning point also marks the beginning of the development of the information economy that encircles the modern world. This is in contrast to a traditional interpretation of the information economy (some sources refer to it as the information age), which is held to have developed much later than 1800. Hedieh Nashieri, for example, puts the first moves towards an information economy in the post-World War Two era, with the …

The Development Of Sub-Saharan African National Consciousness Between The Two Wars 1919-1939 (A Historical Study), Hello Mohammed Ali Hamza Al-Asadi Mar 2014

The Development Of Sub-Saharan African National Consciousness Between The Two Wars 1919-1939 (A Historical Study), Hello Mohammed Ali Hamza Al-Asadi

Uruk Journal of Human Sciences

Africa remained a society lagging behind the European civilization until its first encounter in the modern era with colonialism between two societies, the first a feudal tribal society and the second a modern national society since the nineteenth century AD. African society began to be struck by violent shocks that began to awaken it from its deep slumber, and urged it to keep pace with the modern civilization, so that it was renewed indirectly and was imprinted with the characteristics of modern society. The reasons for political awareness were prepared in proportion to that renewal until its first fermentation began …
