An Historical Study Of The Industries Of Allen County, Kansas., Clifton B. Huff May 1933

An Historical Study Of The Industries Of Allen County, Kansas., Clifton B. Huff

Electronic Theses & Dissertations

There is no romance more thrilling and fascinating than the story of the early settlement of Kansas. Organized as a territory when the content for the extension of slavery was at fever heat, it became the battle field of contending forces. The South determined that it should held as a slave territory; the North was as equally determined that it should represent freedom. The struggle drew the gaze of the people upon "Bleeding Kansas."

Allen County was one of the first thirty-three counties established by the first territorial legislature. Thus the county was one of the pioneers in the early …

Isaiah Thorriton Montgomery His Life And Work, Sister Mary Of Victory Ssf

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

This thesis, submitted to Xavier University in partial fulfillment of requirements for a Bachelor of Arts degree in 1933, presents a biographical and historical study of Isaiah Thornton Montgomery (1847–1924), the founder of Mound Bayou, Mississippi, the most prominent all-Black town in the United States. Drawing on memoirs, newspaper accounts, and the Journal of Negro History, the study traces Montgomery's origins as the son of Benjamin T. Montgomery, an educated slave on the Davis plantation in Mississippi, through his founding of Mound Bayou in 1887 on a 30,000-acre land grant secured from the Louisville, New Orleans, and Texas Railway. The …

An Analysis Of The Social Philosophies Of Brigham Young And John Calvin: With Special Reference To Their Similarities As They Were Expressed Through The Utah And Geneva Theocracies, Wesley P. Lloyd Jan 1933

An Analysis Of The Social Philosophies Of Brigham Young And John Calvin: With Special Reference To Their Similarities As They Were Expressed Through The Utah And Geneva Theocracies, Wesley P. Lloyd

Theses and Dissertations

Brigham Young was an American product of the nineteenth century. John Calvin was a European product of the sixteenth century. Each of these men left definite impressions upon world history. Of the two, Calvin is more widely understood and better known, but we should remember that the element of time was in his favor.

An examination of the lives of these two men indicates definite parallels, and their teachings show many views in common. Both were spiritual as well as temporal leaders, and each succeeded in gaining the interest of the world in his particular time. Just as the attention …

Some Significant Phases Of Justin Martyr In The Development Of Early Christianity, Elmer G. Homrighausen Jan 1931

Some Significant Phases Of Justin Martyr In The Development Of Early Christianity, Elmer G. Homrighausen

Graduate Thesis Collection

The original inspiration to undertake this study issues from composite sources.  Undoubtedly, in the last analysis, it was implanted by the personalities of great teachers, whose contagious enthusiasm for Christian history I contracted early in my theological and later graduate study.  Great teachers, who are intimately acquainted with the ongoing currents of Christian life through the centuries, who have developed a love for the Christian movement, whose mature scholarship gives them the power to discern the real essence of the Christian religion in its historic expressions, these are still the keys to the real understanding of Church history, these are …

The Development Of English Grammar From 1750 To 1929, Helen Kathryn Walsh May 1929

The Development Of English Grammar From 1750 To 1929, Helen Kathryn Walsh

Bachelors’ Theses

For some time I have been interested in the subject of Grammar. A generation ago, it was considered one of the most important subjects in the elementary schools. But now, grammar is a thing one teaches only incidentally. What has brought this change? What is the situation to-day? What may we hope for in the future? These are some of the questions which need to be answered. The pendulum has indeed swung far out into empty space. It surely must return. Will we be able to stop it midway in its course?

Public Opinion And The Textbooks In History, Agnes Ward Aug 1928

Public Opinion And The Textbooks In History, Agnes Ward

Bachelors’ Theses

Sir Robert Peel called public opinion a great compound of folly, weakness, and prejudice, wrong feeling, right feeling, obstinacy, and newspaper paragraphs. However it is the great force which has been constantly at work through the ages, sometimes helpfully, sometimes harmfully, molding human history. the introduction of the printing press made books, pamphlets, magazines and newspapers a popular medium for its expression. Since the middle of the nineteenth century, when history formally became an integral part of the curriculum of our great public school system, there has been developed a suspicion among individuals and groups that the subject might easily …

The Development Of Character Education, Evelyn M. Shaughnessy Jun 1928

The Development Of Character Education, Evelyn M. Shaughnessy

Bachelors’ Theses

All down through the Christian years of Civilization the ultimate end of all education has been the production of men and women of character and high ideals. Then as the rush and commercialism of modern times swept upon us, this real end of education seemed to be overshadowed in the search for mere information.

Cardinal Newman And Christina Rossetti: Contrasted From A Religious And Literary Point Of View, M. Rosenda Sullivan Jun 1928

Cardinal Newman And Christina Rossetti: Contrasted From A Religious And Literary Point Of View, M. Rosenda Sullivan

Bachelors’ Theses

Literature is a magic wand possessed of the power to transport the dwellers of earth away from this sphere of sordid reality into a fairy palace of ecstatic joy. It is the sesame to a world of pleasure indiscoverable in the actual world. Truly it is, to use the words of a poet, "The touch of a vanished hand And the bound of a voice that is still," for through it as a medium the spirits of men and of races long since turned to dust reinhabit their discarded bodies to appear in life-appareled form and re-act time's changeful drama …

The Conception Of History In Tacitus And Livy, Marguerite Teresa Puerner Jun 1927

The Conception Of History In Tacitus And Livy, Marguerite Teresa Puerner

Bachelors’ Theses

Few writers among the ancients have received more condemnation, more criticism, less whole-heart d praise than Tacitus and Livy, the two most eminent historians of antiquity. By far the greater part of modern criticism is unfavorable to them. Even those who profess to admire them apologize for their faults, excuse them, seek to explain them away, and then very generously admit that, when all has been taken into consideration, their histories are really very fine. But all critics, adverse and favorable alike, are forced to grant that these historians have succeeded in giving us the true picture of Rome, and …

The Bearing Of Nationalism Upon The Indian Church, Helen M. Nicholson Jun 1927

The Bearing Of Nationalism Upon The Indian Church, Helen M. Nicholson

Graduate Thesis Collection

There are various conceptions of nationalism, but the one which is incorporated here is that which has to do with a national consciousness, a feeling of unity among those inhabiting the same country. For the most part it is political unity which is meant, though this has been attended by an increasing emphasis upon unity of Indian language, customs, and manners. It must be acknowledged that there is a bond of unity in the historic traditions of the centuries of culture and in the religious myths which are immortalized in the Mahabharata and the Ramayana, but this is hardly sufficient.

The Value Of English Linguistics To The Teacher, Louise Pound Nov 1925

The Value Of English Linguistics To The Teacher, Louise Pound

Department of English: Faculty Publications

WHAT is included in the usual course in the history of the English language? Presumably some teachers emphasize the translation of older monuments, some emphasize training in etymologies, some phonetic changes, and some changes in language structure and forms. Some offer courses in the hope of fostering a more accurate use of language, some because of the discipline ~o be gained from the study of language ID the abstract, and some in order to afford the necessary preparation for the scholar. All have in mind the development, on the part of the student, of a scientific attitude toward language. Any …

Milton On Liberty, Philo M. Buck Jr. Jan 1925

Milton On Liberty, Philo M. Buck Jr.

University Studies (University of Nebraska) (1888–1984)

During the hundred years from Elizabeth to Cromwell European thinkers became acutely conscious of many of the problems and ideas that concern us most intimately even today. In philosophy, in science, in the arts, and in theories of sovereignty and of the state, the foundations were laid for later thought and practice. The most serious wars, unlike the national jealousies of the eighteenth century which were often dynastic, were fought in defense of some conscientious scruple, however much their significance might be clouded by royal ambition or greed.

Three of these in particular give us a group of thinkers on …

College Study Of English, Alfred D. Sheffield Jan 1914

College Study Of English, Alfred D. Sheffield

Mid-West Quarterly (1913–1918)

College study, as we judge it by the quality of intellectual leaven that our young graduates bring into society, is still a theme of discontent. In particular, we feel that the college study of literature and of the literary medium foments no genuine social demand for books and writing of the highest scholarly and reflective type. The criticisms voicing this discontent, it is true, often imply unreasonable expectations as to what the college can achieve with studies elective and students not particularly elect. "We require it to do all sorts of things for all sorts of people, and then wonder …
