Embodying The Digital Breath: A Haptic-Audio Approach To Gamified Mindfulness, Chi Yin Kam
Embodying The Digital Breath: A Haptic-Audio Approach To Gamified Mindfulness, Chi Yin Kam
IASDR Conference Series
In contemporary society, escalating stress levels highlight the urgent demand for effective mental health tools, bringing significant attention to mindfulness. However, existing digital mindfulness tools predominantly rely on singular audio-visual guidance, often resulting in a disembodied experience and low user adherence. Approaching from an industrial design perspective, this study investigates how multi-sensory interaction design can transform the abstract practice of breathing into a tangible, embodied experience, thereby enhancing both immersion and efficacy. Our literature review identifies a significant research gap in combining haptics, audio, and gamification to foster immersive mindfulness. To address this, we propose an innovative mobile application concept, …

Exploring The Meaning Network In Exhibition Design Of Intangible Cultural Heritage, Zhengyu Chen, Ming Zhong, Tie Ji, Yuqing Chen
IASDR Conference Series
In traditional exhibition practice, displays are predominantly object-centered, and information flows remain largely unidirectional, positioning visitors as passive recipients. Under this conventional curatorial paradigm, cultural translation and meaning-making processes are comparatively static and singular. This paper, therefore, seeks to articulate the interrelationships among humans, artifacts, space, and technology, thereby constructing a dynamically participatory and complex system for the expression of cultural, historical, and artistic narratives. Drawing on the proposed “meaning network” model, the author designed the Mianyang Intangible Cultural Heritage Museum, rendering meaning generation more dynamic and information exchange more pluralistic. This approach enhances visitors’ experience and cultural empathy while …

Systemic Facilitation For Execution In Process-Centered Living Labs, Hannah Kang, Yong-Ki Lee
IASDR Conference Series
Civic participatory design is widely practiced as a means of engaging communities in addressing complex public challenges (Sanders & Stappers, 2008; Wacnik, Daly, & Verma, 2024). However, a persistent gap remains between participatory ideation and actual implementation (Teal et al., 2022). This study addresses that gap by introducing a systematic facilitation framework with systemic orientation, which guides participants from exploration to execution readiness. Through a ten-session civic Living Lab designed as a real-world participatory setting involving residents, parents, and officials, focused on school route safety in South Korea, the study tested the use of intentionally sequenced facilitation tools referred to …

Remote patient care has become an important part of how clinicians understand and interact with their patients. Systems that deliver such care are carefully designed and monitored, but are changing the nature of the relationship between clinical practitioners and patients. They are also now being deployed with Artificial Intelligence (AI) to add a further dimension to the relationship. To explore this changing relationship, this paper reports a fieldwork study of a remote patient monitoring system recently implemented in a hospital in the Netherlands. Using an ethnographic approach over 7 months, including participant observation and semi-structured interviews with clinicians and healthcare …

The Bidirectional Relationship Between Behavioural Guidance Design And User Behaviour Habits: Implications For Sustainable Packaging, Xinyi Luo, Qiyun Deng, Qing Huang, Yunyun Wang, Jiangyong Li
IASDR Conference Series
Current sustainable food packaging often emphasises material innovation at the expense of user behaviours role across the life cycle, creating a “sustainability paradox” where environmental gains are offset by behavioural misalignment. This study employs behavioural design theory in a two-stage investigation to examine how packaging design shapes user behaviour. Field research at Xiangtan Universitys snack street identified user challenges for four food packaging categories: ready-to-eat dry food, ready-to-eat wet food, non-ready-to-eat dry food, and non-ready-to-eat wet food, and corresponding behaviours were extracted for each type of food packaging. In Stage 2, two comparative experiments (traditional packaging versus design-guided intervention) involved …

Designing With The Unknown: A Speculative Co-Creation Workshop On Future Human-Robot Interaction In Space Station, Yu Peng, Yuanling Feng, Yu Qiao, Luo Wang
IASDR Conference Series
As public engagement becomes essential in shaping technological futures, supporting non- experts to envision complex, distant scenarios poses a critical challenge for participatory design. This study explores this issue through a co-creation workshop focused on how designers without domain knowledge conceptualize Human-Robot Interaction for a future space station. Our analysis reveals that participants relied on "experience anchoring" and narrative construction to navigate uncertainty, exhibiting a strong "affective turn" that prioritizes socio-emotional connection while "black-boxing" key technologies and simplifying systemic complexity. This research contributes a rich empirical diagnosis of this process, revealing a critical gap between non-expert visions and technical realities. …

Design Considerations For Redefining Vehicle Cabin Comfort: A User-Centered Perspective Based On Large-Scale Text Mining, Xiangyu Zhang, Yuebin Huang, Chaomin Ma, Danhua Zhao, Chunxi Huang
IASDR Conference Series
As vehicles transition into intelligent, electrified platforms, the automotive cabin is rapidly transforming into a “mobile third space” that blurs the boundaries between transportation, productivity, and leisure. In this evolving context, cabin comfort extends beyond physical parameters—such as temperature or seating posture—to encompass emotional well-being, interactive experiences, and aesthetic resonance. However, the design of comfort remains largely rooted in engineering-driven metrics, with limited understanding of how users perceive and articulate comfort in real-world use. To bridge this gap, we conducted a large-scale computational analysis of over 440,000 authentic user reviews from mainstream automotive platforms. Using a combination of word frequency …

Beyond Obedient Tools: A Tensional-Field Relational Ontology For Human-Ai Co-Creation, Ziming Wang, Junyi Zeng, Krity Gera, Ashley Hall
IASDR Conference Series
Design practice frequently characterises generative artificial intelligence (AI) as a compliant, tool-like extension of human intention; however, recent reports of atypical behaviours motivate a re- examination of this metaphor. Grounded in Object-Oriented Ontology, agential realism, and posthumanist theory, this paper introduces the Tensional-Field Relational Framework (TFRF) for human–AI co-creation. TFRF models collaboration as a flat network comprising five semi-opaque node classes: human designer, AI system, creative artefact, intentional vector, and socio technical environment, all linked by dynamically weighted edges and circulating flows. We operational ise this perspective as a diagnostic governance grammar: relations are instrumented as edges with quantified flows …

Relationship Between Respiration And Reflection -Design For Abdominal Suppleness As A New Healthcare Index, Takashi Kato
Relationship Between Respiration And Reflection -Design For Abdominal Suppleness As A New Healthcare Index, Takashi Kato
IASDR Conference Series
Modern healthcare devices quantify bodily states through data, yet users rarely feel a direct bodily connection. This study introduces abdominal suppleness—the softness of the upper abdomen during respiration—as a new embodied health indicator. Integrating traditional Japanese abdominal examination (Fukushin) with physiological measurement, we examined how autonomic activity affects abdominal motion. Experiments using the ocul ocardiac reflex showed slower and deeper abdominal movement under parasympathetic dominance, suggesting that suppleness relates to relaxation. Beyond physiology, we frame abdominal suppleness as a design parameter that bridges sensation and data, enabling users to perceive internal states through reflection via embodiment. This research extends health …
