Nineteen hundred and sixty one was a year of signal importance in the career of Jorge Luis Borges. On May 1, 1961 he was awarded, jointly with Samuel Beckett, the Prix International des Editeurs. Later that same year he published Antología personal, a forty-nine piece selection of his own work dictated by personal preference, which by the fact of selection is important for an appreciation of his work. Finally in the autumn of 1961 he traveled abroad (if we except a few short trips to Uruguay) for the first time in 38 years. He was a Visiting Professor at the …

In his book, The True Believer, Eric Hoffer, with Machiavellian detachment, sets forth a theory on the nature of mass movements. This paper will be primarily concerned with the aspect of Mr. Hoffer' s theory that deals with the setting of the stage for a mass movement--specifically, the temperament, needs, and motives of the men who perform this prerequisite act. Though many and influential were the contributions of other men to the preparation for the final act of church reform in the sixteenth century, it is generally conceded that Desiderius Erasmus and Martin Luther's names stand out in the boldest …

Many Lutherans have written on the subject of fraternal organizations. Their interest has usually been the doctrine of the lodge as opposed to the doctrine of the Church. It is hoped that this study may be a start toward our task of “rounding out" our understanding of fraternal organizations. I trust that the Commission on Fraternal Organizations of the Lutheran Church--Missouri Synod will find it possible to continue studies in this direction.

The 1952 Presidential campaign ushered into national prominence the Democratic nominee, Adlai Ewing Stevenson.

His sudden and dramatic emergence as an important factor in world politics was due in part to his unique oratory. Dynamic in style and content, his speeches commanded the rapt attention of the American people for three intense months during which he delivered over two hundred and fifty. Of interest and importance is the new insight into national problems that he gave to the American voter as a result of these orations.

Many events of the gold rush have been adequately narrated in numerous books and articles. The succeeding pages in this thesis will recall, historically by topic, important incidents of one phase of that period never before treated as a separate study that phase is the theatre of the Mother Lode region.

The argonauts of the Mother Lode wanted to be entertained and could pay for it. Many preferred the saloon and gamboling hall, but the theatre did not languish because of this, and in fact, developed in some instances directly out of the saloons and fandango halls.

This Master Thesis aims to discuss the language mix-up in the Philippines. Originally, the people speak different dialects because of the lack of interaction due to geographical isolation. The Spaniards brought Spanish to them, which became the official language of the government until the Americans came and made English the medium of instruction in the school.

The trouble lies in the fact that English-speaking-and-loving Filipinos want English only, Spanish-speaking-and-loving Filipinos want Spanish only, Tagalog-speaking-and-loving Filipinos want Tagalog only while non-Tagalog-speaking Filipinos are either indifferent or prefer their respective dialects. Suspended in the State Capitol at Sacramento is a portrait of a man under whose name appears the following inscription, "The man whose matchless oratory saved California to the Union". The same name identifies a statue standing in the Congressional Hall of Fame, placed there by the State of California in memory of one of two Californians "most illustrious for their historic renown".
