How Interaction Modalities Influence Academic Co-Writing With Generative Artificial Intelligence, Peter Dalsgaard
How Interaction Modalities Influence Academic Co-Writing With Generative Artificial Intelligence, Peter Dalsgaard
IASDR Conference Series
This paper investigates how interaction modalities, specifically text-based versus speech-based interfaces, influence the experience and outcomes of academic co-writing with generative AI (GenAI). Drawing on distributed and situated cognition and human-AI creativity studies, I argue that modality is a structuring force in how ideas emerge, evolve, and stabilize in academic writing. Text-based interaction supports branching exploration, comparative revision, and temporal layering, enabling asynchronous control and persistent visual memory. In contrast, speech-based interaction facilitates associative thinking and spontaneous ideation, offering immediacy and flow. However, it can limit memory offloading, structural manipulation, and cross-comparison. I synthesize findings from related work in HCI, …

Understanding Coach–Learner Interaction In Fitness Training For Next-Generation Wearables, Yewon Kim, Jisu Park, Tek-Jin Nam
IASDR Conference Series
Understanding interaction between the coach and learner is pivotal in fitness training, yet most fitness technologies emphasize functional metrics over the dynamics of human interaction. To inform the design of more interaction-aware wearable coaching systems, we examined how instructional exchanges unfold during squat training, an activity that requires frequent feedback. We conducted a two-phase interview study involving eight professional coaches and eight adult learners. Through hybrid thematic analysis, we identified two complementary types of cues: action-oriented cues, which specify how to move, and sensation-oriented cues, which direct the learner’s attention to internal bodily sensations. These cues are delivered through verbal, …

IASDR Conference Series
This research explores how immersive virtual reality (VR) storytelling can foster empathy toward people living with dementia. Developed through a Research through Design (RtD) approach, the project simulates symptoms such as disorientation, memory loss, and language disruption using symbolic interaction and narrative fragmentation. A hybrid narrative structure combines fictional sequences with real-life audio testimony. User evaluations revealed that while immersive metaphors effectively conveyed confusion and emotional vulnerability, the inclusion of authentic voices significantly deepened empathic engagement. These findings suggest that VR, when grounded in lived experience, holds strong potential for affective communication in health-related design. The study contributes to research …

Text-to-Image (TTI) generators are becoming widely used and are often promoted as “democratizing” the making of images, independently of the skill set of the user. However, relatively little is known about whether people with different educational backgrounds, skill sets, and literacies use these tools differently, or how these backgrounds influence the quality of the results. In this article, we investigate the impact of Visual Literacy (VL), AI Literacy (AIL), and Prompt Engineering Literacy (PEL) on prompt use. More precisely, we examine how each literacy influences prompt usage patterns, linguistic and semantic composition, and the structure and morphology of prompts. Additionally, …

Virtual Reality (VR) offers opportunities for interactive learning, yet how presence relates to efficacy depends on task design, system control, and learner characteristics. This study examined how presence, system task design (SYS), and learner traits—including baseline efficacy and GPT-based interaction— shape technology adoption (TAM) and technological efficacy (TE) in browser-based VR. Eighty students completed web-based VR scenarios, and data analyzed with structural equation and generalized additive models. The SEM model showed good fit (robust CFI = .95). Presence predicted adoption, which in turn predicted efficacy, but only when scaffolding was well calibrated. SYS, defined by task control and repetition, moderated …

Structural Optimization Of Cst-Based Design Education Models In The Context Of Generative Ai, Chunyu Liao, Chaoqun Li, Zhanrong Cao, Zhouchang Yu, Ruixin Hu, Tao Han
IASDR Conference Series
The discussion on CST-based design education essentially reflects a critical stance toward the conventional use of the CST concept. The development of CST design education emerged as a response to the long-standing limitations of computational thinking (CT), with “CT and CST-based design education” historically forming the foundation of what the academic community has defined as creativity support tools. Today, with the advent of generative AI (GenAI), the genuine realization of CST appears increasingly attainable. The shift in focus from CT to CST design education stems from the latter’s embodiment of more definitive CST characteristics. This paper contributes by tracing the …

IASDR Conference Series
In recent years, generative artificial intelligence has been widely adopted in design and creative practices. However, its tendency to produce “hallucinations”—outputs characterized by illogical ity, bias, or factual inaccuracy—is often regarded as a system flaw. From the perspective of speculative design, which aims not to solve problems but to destabilize assumptions, such generative disruptions can serve as potent catalysts for reimagining futures. This paper re-evaluates the creative potential of AI hallucination through the methodological lens of speculative fiction and design. It outlines three distinct hallucination mechanisms: strategic hallucination, stochastic hallucination, and systemized serendipity. These are illustrated through three case studies—In …
