Repères Pour L'Étude De L'Émotion Dans La Parole Guidelines For The Study Of Emotion In Speech, Christian Plantin
Dirassat
This article examines the study of emotions in speech and interactions. It highlights the transition from argumentation to emotional analysis, detailing emotional terms and their contexts. Key concepts include emotional actants (experiencer, allocator, orchestrator) and how emotions can be triggered by situations or cognitive representations. The article also discusses the cognitive components of emotions and introduces methods for tracking emotional experiences. Ultimately, it emphasizes the intertwined nature of argumentation and emotion, positioning argumentative situations as inherently emotional.
[2025 Honorable Mention] The White Savior Trope In A “Post-Racial” Era, Gannon Camp
[2025 Honorable Mention] The White Savior Trope In A “Post-Racial” Era, Gannon Camp
Ethnic Studies Research Paper Award
This paper explores how the media's promotion of the white savior trope, particularly following Obama's election, contributed to a false perception among Caucasians that significant racial issues had been resolved, despite evidence to the contrary.
Don’T Take St. Anselm For A Marriage Therapist: The Utility Of Substitutionary Atonement Theology In Light Of Feminist Critiques, Abigail Elizabeth Livengood
Don’T Take St. Anselm For A Marriage Therapist: The Utility Of Substitutionary Atonement Theology In Light Of Feminist Critiques, Abigail Elizabeth Livengood
Honors Projects
In light of feminist critiques from the twentieth and twenty-first century, this paper returns to Anselm’s Cur Deus Homo to examine the earliest expression of the Substitutionary Atonement Model. While acknowledging the harmful rhetoric attached to the model which has been brought to light by feminist theologians, this work examines Anselm's characterization of God, Jesus, and suffering from within his medieval worldview. In addition, this paper utilizes understandings of Christ held by historical women and survivors themselves to provide further context for Anselm’s understanding. Ultimately, this paper asserts that while feminist theologians raise important concerns about the dangers of Substitutionary …
Representations Of Queer Cowboys In History, Literature, And Film, Olivia Black
Representations Of Queer Cowboys In History, Literature, And Film, Olivia Black
History & Classics Undergraduate Theses
My senior thesis focuses on showing the existence and erasure of queerness in American cowboys. The first chapter uses two journals from two different cowboys as well as an article from a Denver newspaper to establish what being queer looked like to cowboys and how that queerness continued after the end of the Frontier. Chapter two focuses on interpretations of cowboys in literature using two fictional cowboy stories which included the queer aspects of cowboy life as well as autobiographical and fictional cowboy poetry that confirmed explicit homosexual activity and revealed a shift in public views on being queer. The …
Modeling The Mark 26 Guided Missile Launching System: Exploring Its Role In U.S. Naval Doctrine In The Late Cold War, Ryan Matthew Cabico
Modeling The Mark 26 Guided Missile Launching System: Exploring Its Role In U.S. Naval Doctrine In The Late Cold War, Ryan Matthew Cabico
Theses and Dissertations
The Mark 26 Guided Missile Launch System was an innovative and modular upgrade from previous systems for the United States Navy at a critical development point during the Cold War. Its incorporation into the Virginia-Class, especially the USS Arkansas, exemplified the rapidly evolving scope and demands of naval warfare in the modern era, and the requirements of individual vessels and component parts of the Navy to fulfill U.S. naval doctrine in this era. This same rapid evolution in technology and the global political landscape would ultimately seal the fate of the Mark 26 and USS Arkansas, with their designed innovations …
Unframing Spatial Presence And Resonating Aesthetic Presence : A “Continuous Interaction” Of Visitor Engagement With Chinese Art, Yi Zhu
Lingnan Theses (MPhil & PhD)
Digital technologies, as a prevalent method of display in museums, has been widely used in the presentation and creation of Chinese art, such as software, hardware, and interactive installations in exhibitions. According to Peng Feng (2022), digital technologies can effectively disseminate Chinese classical artworks while enriching visitors’ experience, enhancing their perceptions of aesthetic concepts and facilitating their understanding of the artworks. However, current studies are primarily focused on the social and cultural background information conveyed by the objects, rather than the visitor experiences in the process of interaction with the artworks. Digital technologies can engage visitors through active interaction with …

Arts-Based Sustainability: From New York To Malawi, Martha B. Lerski
Arts-Based Sustainability: From New York To Malawi, Martha B. Lerski
Publications and Research
Recognizing that libraries serve multiple constituencies and subject areas, this chapter documents and advocates for development of transdisciplinary arts-based research (ABR) and culture-related projects linked to environmental challenges. Libraries contribute collections and spaces, as well as the research of library and information scientists. Libraries are currently among invisible contributors to sustainability planning and services. The chapter will link this invisibility to the value of what visual arts refer to as negative space elements in subjects ranging from traditional ecological knowledge to environmental science. Library collections, projects, and research contribute to education for sustainable development (ESD) as required to achieve the …

Journal of Art, Design and Music
In today's fast-changing digital landscape, websites must stand out to gain and retain user attention. Gamification techniques, which use game-design concepts to improve user engagement and satisfaction, are a method to achieve this uniqueness. This research investigates the significant role of purposeful design in the effective application of gamification on websites, emphasising the importance of deliberate and balanced context-specific implementation of gamification By examining industry-leading websites that employ gamification using the Octalysis framework and related theoretical frameworks The findings highlight that, while gamification has the potential to dramatically distinguish the website and boost user interaction and loyalty, its performance and …
Mastering The Phases Of Design Strategy: A Comprehensive Guide To Navigating From Conceptualization To Launch In The Digital Product Life Cycle, Mahmoud Ahmed Gouda Elgazzar, Mina Eshaq Tawfilis Dawood
Mastering The Phases Of Design Strategy: A Comprehensive Guide To Navigating From Conceptualization To Launch In The Digital Product Life Cycle, Mahmoud Ahmed Gouda Elgazzar, Mina Eshaq Tawfilis Dawood
Journal of Art, Design and Music
The initial phase of the digital product life cycle, known as the introduction stage, is undeniably one of the most crucial and challenging periods. It is characterized by an open-ended design process, where ideas are still being explored and refined. This phase also brings about high levels of uncertainty regarding market acceptance, making it essential for companies to foster innovation and experimentation to find the winning formula. Navigating through this early stage presents significant challenges for businesses as they face various obstacles that can impede their success. One prominent obstacle is limited consumer awareness of the new product or service …
How A Swiss Person Bought A Part Of The Russian Empire In California: Revisiting Johann August Sutter’S Purchase Of Fort Ross In 1841, David Aragai
Swiss American Historical Society Review
Today, Fort Ross is a State Historic Park along California’s Highway Number 1. It is about one hundred miles north of San Francisco on the wild, beautiful, and wind torn Sonoma Coast. Founded in 1812, Fort Ross was originally an outpost of the Russian Empire; the southernmost on the American continent and the one farthest away from the imperial capital, St. Petersburg. It was built with the intent to help feed the Alaskan colony, as well as to extract sea otters and other mammals from the surrounding waters due to their valuable fur.

"Great Big Beautiful Tomorrow": Disneyland, Science, And The Cultural Cold War, Emily Searson
"Great Big Beautiful Tomorrow": Disneyland, Science, And The Cultural Cold War, Emily Searson
Master's Theses
Disneyland, the popular Anaheim-based theme park in California, opened its doors during heightened Cold War tensions in 1955. In this thesis, I trace the origins of Tomorrowland, one of the five original themed lands in Disneyland that included futuristic rides and attractions to depict Walt Disney’s imagining of the year 1986. I examine Tomorrowland in particular to argue that WED Enterprises (Disneyland, Inc.’s research and development arm) and Disney’s vision of scientific progress aligned with U.S. Cold War policy goals, especially containment. Disney and WED Enterprises meticulously planned Tomorrowland with the help of notable American defense contractors, including the Monsanto …
Spirometry: For The Winds In Us, Kendall Allison
Spirometry: For The Winds In Us, Kendall Allison
Dissertations, Theses, and Capstone Projects
Spirometers are devices used to measure lung capacity. This capstone is a creative study of what restores our breathing aptitude as a response to the suffocating and alienating consequences of whiteness for people racialized as white. The project is a sequence of lyric essays. The first lyric essay frames whiteness as a condition of exile and examines the cultural and emotional currents that shore it up. I use exile as a frame to emphasize the intensity of the spiritual and cultural alienation that people racialized as white experience. I also contextualize the dis-ease of suicide in my own lineage, and …
The "Self" In Crisis: A Study Of Audre Lorde's The Cancer Journals, Golnaz Salehkarimi
The "Self" In Crisis: A Study Of Audre Lorde's The Cancer Journals, Golnaz Salehkarimi
Dissertations, Theses, and Capstone Projects
In this thesis, I focus on The Cancer Journals and explore how Audre Lorde articulates the chaos followed by breast cancer in her life: what is the nature of the crises? What aspects of her life are largely affected by it? How it unsettles her understanding of time and place, how her daily life, work, relationships, and future plans get affected, and how her self-image and her agency and subjectivity are threatened. Relying on theories of women’s autobiographies, women’s writings, and illness narratives, I explore Lorde’s ways of writing about her body and emotions to regain her sense of self …
A Symbol For The Masses: Sergei Chakhotin And The Modern Crisis Of Propaganda, Benjamin J. Diehl
A Symbol For The Masses: Sergei Chakhotin And The Modern Crisis Of Propaganda, Benjamin J. Diehl
Dissertations, Theses, and Capstone Projects
This dissertation is an intellectual biography of Sergei Chakhotin, a Russian biologist whose most famous work, The Rape of the Masses (1939), represented an insightful, pioneering analysis of modern propaganda as it arose during Europe’s “Age of Catastrophe” (1914-1945). In this work and others, Chakhotin used the psychological theories of Ivan Pavlov to develop a system of thought that emphasized the scientific possibilities and political inevitability of mass conditioning through propaganda. In addition to Pavlov’s theory, Chakhotin also used other intellectual frameworks, such as Taylorism and microbiology, to buttress his own firsthand experience during World War I, the Russian Revolution, …

Manny The Barber: Transitioning The Neurodivergent From High School To Workplace, Julia Barlas
Dissertations, Theses, and Capstone Projects
This capstone project is a documentary short film. The narrative focuses on Manny, a young man on the autism spectrum, who dreams about working in a barber shop. He lives in New York City and attends a specialized public high school. The film empathizes with Manny and with his community at large, illustrating the need for further job training and hiring initiatives acknowledging the potential and value of the neurodivergent. The observational mode of this documentary with some participatory elements serves to present the neurodivergent behavioral nuisances, patterns of speech, and interactions with the surroundings. Pieces of interviews with teachers …
Not Meant To Be Read: The Stories They Silence, The Resistance That Speaks, Cristina Onea
Not Meant To Be Read: The Stories They Silence, The Resistance That Speaks, Cristina Onea
Dissertations, Theses, and Capstone Projects
In this dissertation, I trace the evolution of surveillance from overt state violence to the more insidious forms of ideological policing embedded in everyday life. Through lived experience, oral history, and critical autoethnography, I explore how surveillance moves through bodies, families, institutions, and memory—not simply as external control, but as internalized rhythms of fear, vigilance, and self-surveillance. I move between my father's life under Romanian dictatorship, my own embodied inheritance, and the contemporary struggles of librarians facing ideological suppression to reveal surveillance as a structure that persists through generations, mutates across contexts, and demands new forms of resistance.
I argue …
Guardians Of The Iranian Revolution: Clerical Authority, Bonyads, And The Irgc In Iran's Economic Landscape, Chase M. Toscano
Guardians Of The Iranian Revolution: Clerical Authority, Bonyads, And The Irgc In Iran's Economic Landscape, Chase M. Toscano
Dissertations, Theses, and Capstone Projects
This thesis investigates the ideological and institutional foundations of Iran's post-revolutionary political economy, focusing on the triumvirate of clerical authority, bonyads (charitable foundations), and the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC). Drawing on Kevan Harris’s “subcontractor state” framework, this study argues that Iran’s political economy is simultaneously a decentralized yet state-dominated system, where semi-public institutions like the bonyads and the IRGC act as key subcontractors, enabling the Islamic Republic to further economic development and circumventing Western sanctions. This analysis examines the development of Iran’s political economy from the 1979 revolution to identify the influence of left-wing Islamic ideologues like Ali Shariati …
Unpacking The Orders, Leonard J. Santos
Unpacking The Orders, Leonard J. Santos
Dissertations, Theses, and Capstone Projects
At the end of the first week of his presidency this year in 2025, Donald Trump signed a total of thirty-six executive orders. After only one month, that number had gone up to seventy-six. He is currently on track to sign the highest number of executive orders in his first year in office of any president in the last 50 years, and potentially even the last 100 years if he keeps moving at this rate. In the first 90 days of his term, Donald Trump has signed 159 executive orders, more than any other president in the history of the …
Transmedial Econarratology: Environment And The Subject Of Science Fiction, Joseph R. Boisvere
Transmedial Econarratology: Environment And The Subject Of Science Fiction, Joseph R. Boisvere
Dissertations, Theses, and Capstone Projects
This dissertation argues that narrators are constructed by their interactions with diegetic space and time in an ecological relationship. This argument draws upon Erin James’s work on econarratology, particularly her book The Storyworld Accord: Econarratology and Postcolonial Narratives, putting her theories of narrating time and place in dialogue with contemporary “unnatural” narratology as theorized by scholars such as Jan Alber and Brian Richardson. Science fiction (SF) offers a rich complement to these theoretical stances. I also focus much of my dissertation on how narratology works across and is influenced by specific media, featuring literary, audiovisual, and digital media, including novels, …
Our Relentless Objectification Of Native Americans: As Exemplified By Louise Erdrich And Cherie Dimaline, Lena Kozubek
Our Relentless Objectification Of Native Americans: As Exemplified By Louise Erdrich And Cherie Dimaline, Lena Kozubek
The Kennesaw Journal of Undergraduate Research
Indigenous communities relentlessly challenge the normalized commodification of their culture and beliefs. One way they actively address these oppressions is through storytelling. Their accounts educate readers and encourage them to re-frame modern perspectives and how stereotypes affect Native communities. Their stories are not a simple myth; instead, they serve as an active participant to combat actions that treat Indigenous people as an anomaly. We should treat Native Americans as human beings who invariably struggle with present-day degradations, commodification, and continual displacement. Indigenous authors reclaim their narrative by using their historical context and storytelling skills to dissect the parallels between fact …
Treasures Of God: The Fur Trade As A Motivating Factor Of The Swedish Crusades, Aidan R. Mcdonald
Treasures Of God: The Fur Trade As A Motivating Factor Of The Swedish Crusades, Aidan R. Mcdonald
The Kennesaw Journal of Undergraduate Research
The Fur trade was one of Medieval Europe’s most profitable industries. The Republic of Novgorod in the north of Russia was one of this industry's chief suppliers. Swedish expansion into Finland increasingly brought it into competition with Novgorod who had interests in the Karelians tribe of the region. The Swedes would justify their actions as a series of crusades. However, their actions and words often betrayed their true intentions, repeatedly seeking to seize control of Novgorodian trade as well as the Novgorodian fur tribute. Significant studies have been made of both the Russian fur trade and the Swedish expansion eastwards, …

Dreamvisions+: Virtualizing Medieval Poetics In Multimedia Performance, Mac Waters
Dreamvisions+: Virtualizing Medieval Poetics In Multimedia Performance, Mac Waters
Dartmouth College Master’s Theses
DreamVisions+ is a transdigital and transhistorical odyssey into the realm of fiction and truth, reality and virtuality. Rooted in the tradition of late medieval dream-vision poems—wherein religious or political allegories unfold through dreaming protagonists—DreamVisions+ stages a multimedia dream vision of the digital age, reading medieval dream visions as proto–virtual reality. Through the creation and analysis of DreamVisions+, a full-length solo multimedia performance, I synthesize live electroacoustic music, XR technologies, and 3D game environments with medieval textual and visual iconography to construct a porous, unstable dream world that collapses medieval and digital imaginaries.

Personifying The Goddess: Contrasting Representation Of The Deified Body In Feminist Art, Kelly Lorraine Phillips
Personifying The Goddess: Contrasting Representation Of The Deified Body In Feminist Art, Kelly Lorraine Phillips
Theses
Goddess imagery, the representation of a female deity or a concept of divine feminine power through various forms, symbols, and narratives, has been used by artists to communicate a multitude of sentiments, from spiritual reverence to political ideology. This study probes the evolution of representations of the deified female body from the 1970s to the current era to reveal contrasts in how these icons of female power have transformed over time. The artwork of second-wave feminist and self-identified “Goddess artist” Mary Beth Edelson is examined as a foundation for second-wave Goddess sentiment. Edelson’s collage work, which incorporates figures from a …
Evidence Of The Complexity Of The Conversion To Christianity In Early Medieval Funerary Stone Carvings Of Pagan Cultures In Scotland And Scandinavia, Cameron Genet
Theses
This thesis focuses on stone monuments created between the late fifth to late twelfth centuries CE, specifically in Scotland and Sweden. The aim of this thesis is to interpret the symbols or images inscribed onto the stone monuments to determine what they reveal about the Christianization of these regions. The Picts in Scotland and the Norse in Sweden left behind several standing stones such as the Craw Stane from the Picts and the Ledberg Stone from the Norse which have various symbols carved into them. These stones were sometimes created in connection with a burial, allowing the interpretations of their …

Nature Et Relations Dans La Littérature Caribéenne Francophone De Fin Du Xxe Siècle Et Contemporaine, Louise Bonastre-Fajardo
Nature Et Relations Dans La Littérature Caribéenne Francophone De Fin Du Xxe Siècle Et Contemporaine, Louise Bonastre-Fajardo
Dissertations, Theses, and Capstone Projects
My research project argues that literature novels from the french-speaking Caribbeans contribute to testifying to relationships with the environment, with others, and with oneself. By recognizing nature as a subject of rights under Latin America's new constitutionalism to prevent environmental harm caused by humans, politics can acknowledge that nature is actually a part of a domination system. This study addresses a range of issues within existing power structures, by articulating the notion of "nature" with the notions of "natural" and "supernatural" in a selection of francophone late XX’s century and contemporary Caribbean novels.
An important literature on Latin American and …
Hope By A Thousand Cuts: Fashion Ethics From Cutting Fabric To Cutting A Fashion Film, Sarah G. Porterfield
Hope By A Thousand Cuts: Fashion Ethics From Cutting Fabric To Cutting A Fashion Film, Sarah G. Porterfield
Dissertations, Theses, and Capstone Projects
I conducted an experiment during which I learned to sew, created a clothing collection, and wore nothing but my collection for a month. Additionally, I documented my collection and the process in a fashion film. The goal of my experiment was to investigate fashion ethics. To gain a greater understanding of the underlying theories that fashion materializes and to grasp their ethical implications better, I studied the texts of fashion theorists such as Marx, Barthes, Derrida, Deleuze and Guattari, Butler, Benjamin, and Merleau-Ponty throughout my experiment. Therefore, I gained insight into many aspects of fashion ethics, from the beginning stages …
