Scientific Visual Communication And Collaboration Within Text-To-Image Genai: A Scoping Review, Hao Wei Tu, David Mesa, Christine Thong
IASDR Conference Series
Text-to-image generation artificial intelligence (T2I GenAI) tools such as DALL·E, Stable Diffusion, and Midjourney have emerged as fast and flexible tools for creating scientific visualisations since 2020. However, their application in scientific communication and collaboration remains fragmented across disciplines. To map this landscape, we conducted a scoping review of 38 peer-reviewed articles published after 2020, following the Arksey & O’Malley framework and PRISMA-ScR guidelines. We combined manual searches in Web of Science, Scopus, ACM, and IEEE with AI-assisted searches through Elicit. Then we applied strict inclusion criteria and subject coding. Our analysis identified four main mechanisms by which T2I GenAI …

Decoding Intangible Cultural Heritage Ecology: A Co-Creation Framework For Systemic Design --- Insights From The Dali National Eco-Cultural Protection Zone, Ziyue Zhang, Xiaolei Min
IASDR Conference Series
At present, the protection of intangible cultural heritage (ICH) has entered the stage of systematic protection. The National Eco-Cultural Protection Zones (NECPs), first created by China, are an important model for protecting ICH in the social-natural-cultural ecosystem. However, their sustainable development faces continuous systematic challenges: (1) Intergenerational Transmission Fracture and Policy Misalignment (aging inheritors, youth out-migration, misaligned policies); (2) Digital Activation Gap (static digital archives failing to drive innovation); and (3) Fragile Protection Ecosystem (fiscal dependency, product homogenization, weak market competitiveness). Tobreakthis vicious cycle, we propose a novel Design-Driven Multi-stakeholder Collaborative Co-creation Governance Framework. Its core innovation elevates digital technology …

Developing Publics In Companies Through Infrastructuring For Data-Driven Workplaces In Japan, Masako Kitazaki, Riichiro Take, Ryoko Koborita, Yuichi Nakamura
IASDR Conference Series
This study investigates how the participatory design concept of infra structuring and the formation of a public manifests differently in Japanese workplaces under data-driven management. Building on recognized pillars for public formation—incorporation of authority, development of attachment, and cultivation of ownership—we explore how these elements are shaped by Japan's unique organizational and cultural dynamics. Although employees in Japan express concerns about data use in the workplace, such as potential increases in bias, discrimination, deskilling, and unsafe practices, these anxieties rarely lead to open discussion or collective action. We argue that socio cultural factors, including a deep-rooted emphasis on harmony and …

Facial movement delivers rich emotional messages. This pictorial explores a novel concept in enhancing expressive facial communication – the Internal Facial Contour (IFC). The IFC device constructs a linear visual language on the face through a collection of face-worn wearables. These wearable augmentations deform in response to facial muscle movement, thereby suggesting emotional states. The shape of the IFC device naturally becomes visually wider and more open when smiling; in contrast, it becomes narrower and more closed when frowning. To test the acceptance of this communication language, feedback was collected through casual interviews, visual perception tests, and usage observations. The …

Across U.S. history, posters have helped movements inform, persuade, and mobilize the public, going beyond information to signal identity and values. In this project, I analyze 40 historically significant American political and activist posters, from wartime propaganda to civil rights and queer liberation, to explore how visual choices shape public opinion and drive social change. I focus on elements such as community/heritage colors, typography, composition, and cultural or movement-specific motifs to see how they signal identity, guide action, and contribute to a “successful” poster.
Cultural Synthesis In Iranian Graphic Design: A Fusion Of Tradition And Modernity, Maryam Mehrabadi
Cultural Synthesis In Iranian Graphic Design: A Fusion Of Tradition And Modernity, Maryam Mehrabadi
LSU Doctoral Dissertations
This thesis examines Iranian graphic design as a politically embedded and semiotically charged field wherein visual form operates as a site of ideological negotiation, cultural memory, and symbolic resistance. Focusing on the works of Ghobad Shiva and Morteza Momayez, the study situates graphic design within the sociopolitical constraints of the Pahlavi monarchy and the post-1979 Islamic Republic. It argues that Iranian design practices cannot be understood outside the country’s enduring identity crisis—shaped by the unresolved tension between three coexisting cultural strata: ancient Persian heritage, Islamic civilizational identity, and Western modernity. Drawing on the work of Edward Said, the thesis also …
