Styrofoam: From Industrial Invention To Artistic Transformation, Judith Tannenbaum, Amy Pickworth, Editor Apr 2008

Styrofoam: From Industrial Invention To Artistic Transformation, Judith Tannenbaum, Amy Pickworth, Editor

Journals

Exhibition Notes, Number 29, Spring 2008. Ubiquitous in our culture, styrofoam is used to insulate buildings, package computers and other consumer products, and produce picnic coolers and containers for fast food and take-out. For decades, artists have employed styrofoam in the making of models and molds for casting. Today, however, more and more artists are exploring it as a primary material or a subject in its own right, using it in new and ingenious ways to create sculpture, paintings, and installations.

Angels And Demons: Christina Rossetti’S Goblin Market As A Social Critique Of The Victorian Ideal Of The “Angel In The House” And The Pre-Raphaelites’ Response To That Ideal, Melissa Adams Jan 2008

Angels And Demons: Christina Rossetti’S Goblin Market As A Social Critique Of The Victorian Ideal Of The “Angel In The House” And The Pre-Raphaelites’ Response To That Ideal, Melissa Adams

Theses and Dissertations

Christina Rossetti’s poem Goblin Market presents a subversive critique on the socially constructed dichotomy of Angel versus Demon as depicted in Pre-Raphaelite artwork, Dante Gabriele Rossetti’s poetry, and Coventry Patmore’s poem Angel in the House. An analysis of Goblin Market in relation to Patmore’s poem and the Pre-Raphaelite paintings The Annunciation, Ophelia, Lady Lilith, Circe Offering the Cup to Ulysses, and Sibylla Palmifera and Dante Gabriele Rossetti’s poems “Soul’s Beauty” and “Body’s Beauty” illustrate the ways in which Rossetti presents a counter-image that breaks down this socially constructed dichotomy. This is additionally supported by an exploration …

Alice Spencer - Fabricating Time: Paintings And Collected Textiles, University Of New England Art Gallery Jan 2008

Alice Spencer - Fabricating Time: Paintings And Collected Textiles, University Of New England Art Gallery

Exhibition Catalogues

Alice Spencer - Fabricating Time: Paintings and Collected Textiles is the catalogue from the University of New England Art Gallery’s November 13, 2008—January 11, 2009 exhibition of the paintings and collection of Alice Spencer. The paintings in Fabricating Time are improvisational compositions, incorporating patterns chosen for their strong graphic nature, including changing scale and intricacy. These patterns serve as a metaphor for the evolution of the human spirit through time. The exhibition was designed as a dialogue between the paintings and the source of their inspiration - the hand-woven, embroidered, resist dyed and pieced textiles Spencer collected on trips throughout …

Portraiture: An Interactive Experience, Juan Lopez Jan 2008

Portraiture: An Interactive Experience, Juan Lopez

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Linking his thematic inspiration (the strange, the bizarre, the weird and the odd) to his artistic reflection, Lopez conceives of his work as based on his fascination with human facial expressions. "It is there where it is born", he says. Like Leonardo, he believes that the eye is the superior organ. Lopez's use of form and color represents his main objective: to show emotion, humanity and elegance. For that, it is necessary for him to reveal character as well as beauty. It is again, the approach used by the great masters such as Leonardo, Velazquez, Gericault and Goya in representing …

Perceptions Of Reality, Matthew Dombrowski Jan 2008

Perceptions Of Reality, Matthew Dombrowski

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

My thesis explores the relationship between the human psyche and the perception of reality through the use of computer generated media. In a society in which we are bombarded with multimedia technology, we must look inside our selves for a true understanding of our past and memories. Rather than it acting as an escape from reality, my art becomes an opening for truth in reality.

Anatomy Of An Arabetic Type Design, Saad D. Abulhab Jan 2008

Anatomy Of An Arabetic Type Design, Saad D. Abulhab

Publications and Research

Arabetic type design, like type design in general, should not be limited by rigid rules, other than those advocating open choice and user options. But as with all design fields, highlighting certain principles and guidelines is crucial to realizing a successful project. In an Arabetic font design environment, such guidelines and principles should reveal deeper understanding of various scripts visual and behavioral defining characteristics rather than mere traditional calligraphic and handwriting norms. A main goal of this study is to emphasize that designing Arabetic fonts is much easier than it is portrayed, and designers of all backgrounds should be more …

The Politics Of Persuasion Versus The Construction Of Alternative Communities: Zines In The Writing Classroom, Aneil Rallin, Ian Barnard Jan 2008

The Politics Of Persuasion Versus The Construction Of Alternative Communities: Zines In The Writing Classroom, Aneil Rallin, Ian Barnard

English Faculty Articles and Research

We discuss how studying and creating zines in our composition classes allows our students to negotiate and explore the complexities of writing without the compulsions of many of the politically problematic commonplaces of composition pedagogy. We use zines to examine the unique ways in which their rhetorical devices address conflicts around questions of audience and diversity, as well as the particular questions that the zines raise about the politics of persuasion, our own writing practices, writing strategies that the zines suggest to us, and the construction of alternative communities.

School of Art, Art History, and Design: Theses and Student Creative Work

World events, political satire and social commentary are expressed in my artwork. believe that under the current political circumstances, history is often ignored, forgotten or miscommunicated. My work is a response to the misinterpretation and continuous change in the world around us. I am interested in looking into the relationship between three countries, Japan, the U.S. and China. I grew up in Hiroshima, Japan until I was sixteen years old. Every summer, schools in Hiroshima have an intense educational program that teaches students about "peace" and how it is important for people to know that there is no such thing …

Chinchorro Twined Shrouds, Vicki Cassman, Nancy Odegaard, Bernardo Arriaza Jan 2008

Chinchorro Twined Shrouds, Vicki Cassman, Nancy Odegaard, Bernardo Arriaza

Textile Society of America: Symposium Proceedings

Twined textile shrouds, beginning at least nine thousand years ago, were an integral and relatively unchanging feature of Chinchorro mummy bundles, though Chinchorro mummification practices dramatically varied through the millennia. Twined mats were used like casings, enshrouding the bodies, like a postmortem amniotic sack made from vegetal fibers. They carried the individuals to the after world protected in the belly of the earth. Chinchorro mummies beginning with the earliest dated individual, known as Acha Man, from 9,000 B.P. through and into to the next cultural phase, Formative 3,000 -1,500 B.P., were enveloped in a reed shroud. The use, materials, structures …

Identification Of Red Dyes In Textiles From The Andean Region, Ana Roquero Jan 2008

Identification Of Red Dyes In Textiles From The Andean Region, Ana Roquero

Textile Society of America: Symposium Proceedings

Introduction

The identification of dyes and pigments is nowadays very precise by means of different systems of chromatographic analysis. Nevertheless, as the same dye component can be found in different plants and animals, it is important when studying dyes in textiles to consider the geographical and cultural context of both the textile and the possible dyestuffs used historically in the area.

In the case of South American textiles, the major source of bibliographical information about the subject can be found in the Spanish Chronicles from the Americas, produced during the XVI–XVII centuries. Although European textile technology was introduced in the …

A Poem Is A Robe And A Castle: Inscribing Verses On Textiles And Architecture In The Alhambra, Olga Bush Jan 2008

A Poem Is A Robe And A Castle: Inscribing Verses On Textiles And Architecture In The Alhambra, Olga Bush

Textile Society of America: Symposium Proceedings

Medieval Persian poet Farrukhi Sistani writes, “I left Sistan with merchants of fine robes/ The robe I bore was spun within my heart/ And woven from my soul.” To write in these terms is to weave a text. Another poem of the qasida type by Nasir-i Khusraw varies the analogy, “I shall make a castle of my qasida and within it / Create gardens and porticoes from its verse.” A poem, then, is both a robe and a castle.

Jerome W. Clinton brings these and other samples together to examine “metaphors of craft,” the better to understand the construction of …

Field Of Flowers: Mughal Carpets And Treasures, Michael Schuster Jan 2008

Field Of Flowers: Mughal Carpets And Treasures, Michael Schuster

Textile Society of America: Symposium Proceedings

In mid-seventeenth century South Asia, the taste for naturalistic floral sprays reached an apogee of artistic expression. During the reign of the Mughal dynasty (1526-1857), the aesthetic style pervaded the arts of South Asia. Its influence has been strong ever since; it continues to be prevalent in South Asian design today and has had an impact on aesthetic traditions of the West and China. The current exhibition illustrates this distinctive Mughal idiom and reveals the continuity of the artistic tradition in contemporary India and Pakistan. For many, the arts developed during the Mughal Empire are synonymous with taste, luxury, and …

Dress Of The Lolo, Pathen, Hmong And Yao Of Northern Vietnam In 2005-2006: Reflections Of Cultural Continuity And Change, Serena Lee Harrigan

Textile Society of America: Symposium Proceedings

Ethnic Dress: Reflecting Ancestral Roots

Unknown to the vast majority of the world, many people in northern Vietnam continue to wear a distinctive costume that speaks of their ties to a unique ancestral past, ancient beliefs, and time honored cultural traditions. While ninety per cent of Vietnam’s population of 84 million is from the majority group known as Viet Kinh, Vietnam is in actuality a fascinating composite of fifty four ethnic groups. Approximately thirty of the minority groups live in northern Vietnam. Varying in size from two hundred to half a million, these groups are minute in comparison to the …

Textiles, Masculinities And Spontaneous Communities In The Burning Man Project, Susan Kaiser, Denise Nicole Green Jan 2008

Textiles, Masculinities And Spontaneous Communities In The Burning Man Project, Susan Kaiser, Denise Nicole Green

Textile Society of America: Symposium Proceedings

What is Burning Man?

Burning Man organizers assert that “trying to explain what Burning Man is to someone who has never been to the event is a bit like trying to explain what a particular color looks like to someone who is blind.” Such enigmatic and authenticating discourse permeates the Burning Man website, as it seeks to affirm itself as a mythical, enchanted, and fantastical Bohemian space. Quite simply, the Burning Man Project is an annual festal gathering in the desert, where people come together from across the globe to form a community known as Black Rock City. The annual …

“I’Ve Got A Feeling We’Re Not In Kansas, Anymore:” Cross-Cultural Design In Peruvian Connection’S Textiles, Margarete Ordon

Textile Society of America: Symposium Proceedings

Peruvian Connection is a high-end clothing, mail-order catalog company that has built its reputation on clothes made from finely crafted textiles in luxury fibers. The company appropriates elements from various textile practices and fuses them with Western fashion. The company simultaneously stresses distance and connection, colonization and celebration. We cannot simply locate the company in the rural Kansas town in which the corporate headquarters are based. Rather, this company straddles multiple geographic, temporal, and cultural locations, while simultaneously trying to ground its products in Peru. But we’re not in Kansas anymore, and we’re not in Peru, either.

I have chosen …

The Quilt Index: Communicating Stories In The Stitches, Mary Worrall, Marsha Macdowell, Justine Richardson Jan 2008

The Quilt Index: Communicating Stories In The Stitches, Mary Worrall, Marsha Macdowell, Justine Richardson

Textile Society of America: Symposium Proceedings

During the last third of the twentieth century, a revival of quiltmaking occurred throughout the world along with a concurrent emergence of quilts as a focus of documentation and study. The rise of the feminist art movement in the 1960s and a heightened national interest in American history spawned by the nation’s bicentennial celebration in 1976 paved the way for a burst of interest in historical and contemporary American traditions, women’s artistic contributions, crafts in general and quiltmaking in particular. Millions of individuals began making quilts, an art form that had languished after World War II. By 2006, there were …
