Art As Therapy And Meditation, Julia Ann Harmon Tilden
Art As Therapy And Meditation, Julia Ann Harmon Tilden
Theses
Art as Therapy and Meditation by Julia Ann Harmon Tilden explores the therapeutic and meditative qualities of art through a deeply personal and experimental journey during her graduate studies at Lindenwood College. The thesis documents a year marked by personal loss, during which the author turned to her creative practice as a source of emotional healing and introspection. Through a combination of drawing, painting, mixed media, and three-dimensional work, Tilden investigates how art-making can foster emotional expression, spiritual reflection, and psychological relief.
The body of work presented in this thesis includes pastel drawings, abstract paintings, collages, sculptural canvases, and illuminated …

Indian Trade Cloth In Egypt: The Newberry Collection, Ruth Barnes
Indian Trade Cloth In Egypt: The Newberry Collection, Ruth Barnes
Textile Society of America: Symposium Proceedings
The Department of Eastern Art in the Ashmolean Museum, Oxford, holds what is undoubtedly one of the largest single collections of block-printed textiles produced in India, but exported to Egypt as part of the medieval Islamic Indian Ocean trade. These textiles, all now mere fragments, are of particular interest for two reasons. Firstly, fabrics of this type give us the earliest surviving examples of Indian weaving, although single fibre fragments have been found at the Indus Valley site of Mohenjo-Daro, dating to the second millenium B.C. , and we have numerous Vedic references to dress and textiles, as well as …

Sheldon Museum of Art: Catalogs and Publications
The art of Ed Ruscha has been a consistent and important presence on the art scene since 1960. Yet his works have not received the high visibility media coverage that the work of many of his peers, such as Jasper Johns and Andy Warhol, have garnered. This situation can, in part, be attributed to the fact that contemporary art criticism has tended to center around clearly defined movements, and Ruscha's work has resisted easy categorization. In addition, interpretations of his work have shifted over the past few decades--his work has been cited in discussions of Pop art, Conceptual art and, …

Sheldon Museum of Art: Catalogs and Publications
Among the prestigious holdings of 20thcentury American art at the Sheldon Memorial Art Gallery, University of Nebraska-Lincoln, are outstanding examples of folk art that visitors frequently refer to as their favorites. Native Visions: Art by Folks includes Sheldon's sensitively rendered 19th-century shop sign Horse, the 18th-century limner portrait Girl with Rose and Book, and the 19thcentury watercolors Ship and Whale, both of the latter undated, by unknown artists, and found in whaling log books. In addition to these familiar pieces, the exhibition features 18th-, 19th- and 20th-century folk art objects selected primarily from private collections throughout Nebraska. Works …
Moccasins Into Slippers: Traditions And Transformations In Nineteenth-Century Woodlands Indian Textiles, Ruth B. Phillips
Moccasins Into Slippers: Traditions And Transformations In Nineteenth-Century Woodlands Indian Textiles, Ruth B. Phillips
Textile Society of America: Symposium Proceedings
Towards the middle of the nineteenth-century a swift and dramatic transformation occurred in textiles and other kinds of art made by Woodlands Indians in northeastern North America, This transformation was accomplished in part by a wholesale replacement of indigenous materials with Euro-American manufactures— cloth for hide, glass beads for porcupine quills and silk ribbon for paint. It also encompassed the introduction of entirely new object types and the substitution of a new vocabulary of floral imagery for older iconographic traditions.
It is not, of course, coincidental that this change in iconography and materials occurred simultaneously with the rapid growth of …

An Art Therapy Program For Women Who Are Chemically Dependent And/Or Victims Of Domestic Violence: A Training Manual, Mary H. Cook
Theses
Women who are chemically dependent and/or victims of domestic violence have difficulty identifying and expressing feelings. One of the most important aspects of recovery is learning to feel again and to talk a bout feelings.
Art therapy is a form of psychotherapy in which the therapist utilizes visual expression as a means of communication. The most common traits of these clients are low self-esteem, depression, anger, and a sense of helplessness . By making the issues symbolic, art therapy facilitates communication and reduces confusion.
This study presents an overview of art therapy, and a training manual is included for therapists …

The love I've experienced in life has inspired me to explore the positive, creative power of woman. I see woman as a vessel. Within she holds her love, new life, and a host of ideas, emotions and dreams. The potential of women in today's American culture fascinates me. Women face a wide variety of life-choices. For many, these new opportunities in the work-place have been accompanied by fresh dilemmas. How does one juggle family, work, spiritual, and personal responsibilities? Challenged, today's woman is pregnant with possibilities, full of new hope and new life. Yet she also has an eternal side, …

Duct was an experimental student magazine “for communication.” The 1990 issue features overlaid and partial text, making it difficult to read the contents. The focus of the publication appears to be the Graphic Design department, with an "article" discussing the lack of women professors, another article dealing with whether Barbara Kruger is a graphic designer, an interview with a student named "Maria," and other text.

Spatiality In Ulysses And Cubism, Lingchei Chen
Spatiality In Ulysses And Cubism, Lingchei Chen
English Theses & Dissertations
The paper is a study of James Joyce's Ulysses and Cubism in modern art. Both forms, as the paper presents, use similar techniques to establish multidimensionality in the work of art. In a spatial novel like Ulysses, because of its techniques, the reader is allowed to experience exactly what the characters experience as Joyce presents every aspect of the Dublin life simultaneously. A Cubist painting does the same. As the Cubist painter captures every side of the object and simultaneously presents these different views on the canvas, the spectator is therefore able to apprehend the object from every possible angle, …

Feasibility Study For A Desktop Publishing Lab For Education And Industry At Pittsburg State University, Dee A. Link
Electronic Theses & Dissertations
A desktop publishing lab to serve education and industry involves a multiple of problems not the least of which is defining what it is and how it is used by individuals, business and the printing industry. Desktop publishing is a method whereby an individual can at will produce computer generated material, at his or her desktop, that is camera-ready for reproducing in a chosen manner and then distributed for the public's information. The term was coined in 1985 by Paul Brainerd, president and founder of Aldus Corporation, makers of one of the first pagination programs, PageMaker.

Science/Technology/Abstraction: Art At The End Of The Decade, Wright State University Art Galleries
Exhibition and Program Catalogs
Science and technology are two dominant art themes that have been weaving their way through the 1980s. This show makes that point very strongly, but in doing so it does not I intend to show every work of art that has used scientific or technological subject matter, or has been hooked up to an electric outlet during this I decade. That would be both I indiscriminate and unrewarding. What this exhibition does set out to do is give enough breadth of focus to the subject to make it understandable that many artists in the past few years have been using …
