Articulations Of Irish Language Poetry As Multimodal Texts, Brenda Duggan Jan 2012

Articulations Of Irish Language Poetry As Multimodal Texts, Brenda Duggan

Conference Papers

Abstract

In October of last year, visual communication students at Technological University Dublin took part in an exhibition of Irish language literature texts that were imaginatively extended, exploring an array of new literacies. Taking the Irish language texts as a starting point for this project, students creatively explored print, visual, digital and material modes to extend the meaning of the poetry.

This paper explores, from a social semiotic perspective the creative potential this multimodal work offers design pedagogy in how we frame and articulate meaning across both print and digital media design education. With an emphasis on an ensemble of …

"We Should Have Brought The Tank": Hypermediated Interactivity In Red Vs. Blue, Marc A. Ouellette Jan 2012

"We Should Have Brought The Tank": Hypermediated Interactivity In Red Vs. Blue, Marc A. Ouellette

English Faculty Publications

Machinima, the practice of adapting recorded video game play into short films, highlights an often unacknowledged but significant shift in the consumption of video games and represents a key and underexplored intersection between the two leading theoretical camps. Considering the landmark series Red vs. Blue through the lens of Bolter and Grusin's propositions about "new" media's relationships with other forms offers an entry point for theorizing not only machinima but also the intersections between the ludology and narratology positions in games studies.

Typographic And Image Explorations, Ben Rupp Jan 2011

Typographic And Image Explorations, Ben Rupp

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

These typographic and image based designs explore multiple components of design including: legibility, manipulation, communication, and conventionalism with an emphasis on information graphics. Drawing from influences of the Futurist designers and Dadaist typography, I take the mundane details of an object such as a baseball or car to create excessive amounts of visually stimulating graphics. Through this process of gathering detailed information, I take photographs, draw by hand and scan images to fully understand and portray an objects identity until I feel satisfied that the objects visual potential has been exhausted. These personal expressions are combined to form printed material …

Woven Images: All Techniques Considered, Tommye Mcclure Scanlin Jan 2010

Woven Images: All Techniques Considered, Tommye Mcclure Scanlin

Textile Society of America: Symposium Proceedings

What motivates an artist to create images using textile media? What weaving techniques are suitable for image making? Weavers through the ages have taken colored weft threads in hand and inserted them into the warp, row-by-row, building shape upon shape in the powerful and nuanced, yet structurally simple, technique of weft-faced tapestry. With the invention of the jacquard loom, the kind of complex image making that was previously only common in tapestry weaving became mechanized, and available on a commercial level that involved faster production rates, lower costs and the creation of multiples. In recent years, the innovations in, and …

Capturing Movements In A 3d Interactive Dynamic System, Flemming Tvede Hansen Aug 2009

Capturing Movements In A 3d Interactive Dynamic System, Flemming Tvede Hansen

Nordes Conference Series

This article discuss 3d digital dynamic systems as an interactive design tool for 3d physical form as an approach to the design process useful for the ceramic artist and related fields. The article is about an experiment based on the cooperation between the programmer and designer Marcin Ignac, and the author of this article, a ceramic artist. The experiment explores interactive 3d digital drawing, which responds visually to the movement of the hand in a virtual 3d space using a wii remote as a device. The captured movement forms the basis for a 3D physical model produced by the use …

Alice Spencer - Fabricating Time: Paintings And Collected Textiles, University Of New England Art Gallery Jan 2008

Alice Spencer - Fabricating Time: Paintings And Collected Textiles, University Of New England Art Gallery

Exhibition Catalogues

Alice Spencer - Fabricating Time: Paintings and Collected Textiles is the catalogue from the University of New England Art Gallery’s November 13, 2008—January 11, 2009 exhibition of the paintings and collection of Alice Spencer. The paintings in Fabricating Time are improvisational compositions, incorporating patterns chosen for their strong graphic nature, including changing scale and intricacy. These patterns serve as a metaphor for the evolution of the human spirit through time. The exhibition was designed as a dialogue between the paintings and the source of their inspiration - the hand-woven, embroidered, resist dyed and pieced textiles Spencer collected on trips throughout …

Explorations & Redefinitions Of New Media Aesthetic Concepts In Contemporary Art Culture, Phillip S. Delacruz Jan 2007

Explorations & Redefinitions Of New Media Aesthetic Concepts In Contemporary Art Culture, Phillip S. Delacruz

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

My thesis pursues the exploration, invention, and redefinition of the role of Aesthetics through artistic practices of 3d digital graphics, 2d print, video, and sculpture. Aesthetic research altruistically generates visual installations informed by utopian idealism, science and technology centric culture, pop culture iconography, art history, international contemporary art and design.

Adaptive Technomythography: The Apotheosis Of Machine And Development Of Legend In A System Of Dynamic Technology, Roger Wolf Jan 2007

Adaptive Technomythography: The Apotheosis Of Machine And Development Of Legend In A System Of Dynamic Technology, Roger Wolf

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Human beings will effectively deify any suitably complex system that cannot be explained through basic haptic interaction. Our culture loves technology. These days it seems we need it to feel whole. In an effort to explore the development of mythology and modular aesthetic in a technological age I have designed and constructed a number of interactive robotic 'organisms' to engage in arbitrary movement in geometric enclosures. Through observation and dialog I seek to assess the extent to which people assign human characteristics to the random and oft times aberrant mechanical behavior. To supplement this endeavor, a fictional astrological system that …
