Performance Of Illustrations And Images As Language In Sarnath Banerjee’S All Quiet In Vikaspuri, Akanksha Barthwal Ms
SANE journal: Sequential Art Narrative in Education
Sarnath Banerjee’s All Quiet in Vikaspuri, fictionalizes but at the same time addresses water wars and political ideologies in the city of Delhi. By the means of eco-critical approach in the name of Vi-kas (development) Banerjee discuss the acts of slow violence subverted on nature in the name of progress (vikas). Through text/ images the author depicts chaos and challenges for the readers in more direct and obscene ways. The current paper attempts to look at Banerjee’s illustrations and images as new form of language emerged in modern Indian literature with the possibly that illustrations have more effect on …

This study investigates the impact of Generation Z’s (Gen Z’s) digital immersion and post-COVID lifestyle patterns on their interpersonal relationships. The literature shows that anxiety, continuous online connectivity, and pseudo-relationships developed through social media hinder their ability to form and maintain face-to-face connections. Using case studies, visual analyses, and research-grounded graphic design, the project examines how Gen Z utilizes coffee shops as a hybrid space for work and selective social interaction. The analysis shows that this generation is open to in-person engagement when environments feel convenient, low-pressure, and aligned with their values. These findings inform the development of Percolate, a …
Proposing A Tangible Interaction Framework For The Design Of Industrial Robot Teaching Systems: Enhancing User Efficiency In Learning Operations, Chaomin Ma, Chenqi Wang, Feng Zou
Proposing A Tangible Interaction Framework For The Design Of Industrial Robot Teaching Systems: Enhancing User Efficiency In Learning Operations, Chaomin Ma, Chenqi Wang, Feng Zou
DRS Biennial Conference Series
In the industrial robotics field, mastering the operation of traditional industrial robot teaching systems requires operators to undergo intricate training, hindering production efficiency. To address this challenge, we proposed an interaction design framework for industrial robot teaching systems based on tangible interaction theory. This study outlined how our proposed framework, anchored in tangible interaction paradigms, provided architectural direction for the design of these teaching systems, markedly enhancing operators' efficiency in learning operations. We utilized this framework to direct the interaction design of a welding robot teaching system and validated the framework's feasibility through experimentation. Experimental results revealed a notable enhancement …
Designing With The Challenges Of The Anthropocene, Guilherme Englert Corrêa Meyer, Carl Disalvo
Designing With The Challenges Of The Anthropocene, Guilherme Englert Corrêa Meyer, Carl Disalvo
DRS Biennial Conference Series
The Anthropocene is a concept that has been stimulating several initiatives among theorists and practitioners in Design. This paper explores how Design has been coping with this concept. It builds from a literature review to elaborate three challenges with themes related to the Anthropocene. They are: unsettling Modernity; noticing neglected multiplicity and creating new imaginaries. We share 12 projects related to these challenges were selected. The projects were analyzed considering how they address the theme they were attached to, and how they elaborate tactics and mechanisms to cope with the challenges. Based on such analyzes, the paper presents a matrix …
Beyond Braiding: Transcending Artifact-Centered Conceptions Of Craft In Digital Fabrication, Nathaniel Elberfeld, Lavender Tessmer, Alexandra Waller
Beyond Braiding: Transcending Artifact-Centered Conceptions Of Craft In Digital Fabrication, Nathaniel Elberfeld, Lavender Tessmer, Alexandra Waller
DRS Biennial Conference Series
Craft traditions have motivated recent scholarship and projects by practices and pedagogies with diverse research agendas in digital fabrication. In this work, the technical complexity of a traditional craft is explored through a conceptual lens such as automation, software development, or knowledge encapsulation. Despite the varied research landscape, many of these projects focus on the craft artifact itself and disengage from the broader ecologies in which it is traditionally creat-ed. In this paper, we establish a positioning framework for craft-based digital work and introduce new terminology to define its theoretical boundaries and to disambiguate the increasingly crowded space of “digital …

Body. Freedom. Choice: Creating Artwork In Post-Roe America, Erin Sedra
Graduate Theses/Dissertations
I knew from a young age that I never wanted children. Whenever I expressed my disinterest in motherhood, I was often met with bewilderment, disapproval, and hostility. The church I was raised in taught me that my value and worth as a woman directly correlated with the power of my birthing hips. This fundamentalist upbringing has significantly shaped my relationship with my femininity, my body, and my artwork. When I feel powerless, turning to my art gives me a sense of control and self-expression. This body of work began as a reaction to the overturning of Roe v. Wade and …
Graphic Standards In Graphic Heritage: Scope, Scale, And Unity Through Multiplicity In Islamic Design, Robert George Harland
Graphic Standards In Graphic Heritage: Scope, Scale, And Unity Through Multiplicity In Islamic Design, Robert George Harland
IASDR Conference Series
The concept of graphic standards is well-known across several disciplines. In design, it is most substantively understood in architecture, but its American origins present a limited aesthetic scope that favours classical architectural norms that overlook non-western architectural traditions. This paper explores their relevance concerning urban heritage and the emerging concept of graphic heritage and explores how the concept may be used to understand the value of repetition and frequency in Islamic art, architecture, and design. The research follows an exploratory hypothesis that seeks to describe and redefine some related concepts that will benefit a cross-disciplinary appreciation of cultural heritage and …

As the foundation of design is laid down early in a designer’s career, it is the process of creatingwithin limited parameters which develops their style. Many designers begin with a broad rangeof skills that are honed as they navigate working with clients. Applying their unique approach tohe project at hand, it is at this time when design peers create a niche market. The designer’stouch becomes a recognizable signature upon their body of work. With a comprehensiveportfolio, the designer can present their approach to tackling challenging concepts. Paperengineer and illustrator Helen Friel is a designer with a diverse body of work, …
Expressive Marks: Art In The Age Of Augmented Reality, Carson G. Levine
Expressive Marks: Art In The Age Of Augmented Reality, Carson G. Levine
Dartmouth College Master’s Theses
Augmented reality (AR) and non-fungible tokens (NFTs) introduce new considerations for the long-standing debate of what it means for digital art to be “real.” However, the ability to create AR experiences is limited to those who are technically skilled or who can afford to consult someone else. This paper addresses the need for an accessible tool that enables artists of all technical backgrounds to expressively create marks in AR. The solution includes a mobile application called CrayonAR. The system was designed to be modular, minimal, and physically engaging, and was developed in Unity using ARFoundation and Firebase Storage and Realtime …

Faculty Publications
The catalogue for the exhibition "The Light of the Revival: Stained-Glass Designs for Restituted Synagogues in Ukraine by Eugeny Kotlyar" held at Fordham University from September 10-December 10, 2023 offers a broad perspective on the revival of Ukrainian synagogues after Ukraine’s independence. It showcases three sets of stained-glass windows, which were designed by Eugeny Kotlyar and partially implemented in Ukrainian synagogues in the period from 1995 to 2005. Two early works shown here were the first samples of stained-glass designs for modern Ukrainian synagogues, which set a new trend. The first of them—the stained-glass windows for the Kharkiv Choral Synagogue …

Schmucker Art Catalogs
Artists, perhaps to emphasize their own dedication to the intellectual and manual skills required for making art, have long been drawn to the theme of labor, both in their depictions of workers and scenes of making. In the late seventeenth century, Dutch paintings frequently portrayed earnest and diligent artisans performing trades at shops or on the streets. Later, rapid economic, social and political changes throughout Europe in the mid-nineteenth century led to a more radical approach to realist representations of labor. This exhibition ART/WORK: Labor, Identity, and Society considers these art-historical precedents to explore the issues of labor in art. …

The Relativity Of Value, Lai Xu
The Relativity Of Value, Lai Xu
Masters Theses
My practice is an inquiry into the fluctuation of value. To deconstruct the simplistic consumer tropes of mundane/luxury, simple/complex, or hidden/obvious, I experiment with speculative forms of hybridization using interactive media platforms to create an alternate temporality. Microscopic moments open the door to design opportunities. Through field observations, image sequences, data, and archives of artifacts, I roll out the simple signifiers of symbolic value to pause attention while also exposing the paradox of our consumptive behaviors.

I’m not going to give it all away up front, but here are a few things you’ll find inside: a flower that tastes like peppermint, a book that smells like sunscreen, a silver orb that purrs, a woman becoming a tree, a shy rainbow, and a hat that is also a disguise. There are lists, letters, dreams, and notes. I hope there aren’t typos, but I’m only human, after all. There is sense, and there is also nonsense.
If you decide to join me here, we will wander elsewhere — across different kinds of terrain, into sensory experiences, between mediums, …

The Yellow Springs is a vivid metaphorical reference to the final destination of a mortal being and the dwelling place of a departed one in ancient China. In the writings of philosophers, historians, and poets during the long period of Chinese history, the Yellow Springs is not only considered as an underground physical locus where a grave is situated, but also an emotionally charged space invoke grieving, longing, and memory for the departed loved ones. The subterranean dwelling at the Yellow Springs is both a destination for a departed mortal being and an intermediary place to an ideal and imaginative …

Slashed Interiors: Text/Space, Igor Siddiqui
Interiority
This essay explores the relationship between text and space by considering the notion of writing interiors as a form of creative practice. The research focuses on the textual and spatial uses of the punctuation mark slash (/), as evidenced in a range of text-based works by Barbara Kruger, Glenn Ligon, Dom Sylvester Houédard, Anni Albers, and other artists. The first part of the essay surveys the typographic character’s varied uses in written language; the second part considers its role within artwork titles, namely how its presence shapes spatial interpretations of each artwork in question; in the third part, preceding the …

An Exotic Journey Into The Commonplace, Linda Weintraub
An Exotic Journey Into The Commonplace, Linda Weintraub
Artizein: Arts and Teaching Journal
Standardized mass-produced commodities, reliance upon electronic data-gathering, and sanitized material manipulations are so pervasive in contemporary industrialized societies that today, ‘exotic’ experiences activate sensory interactions with the substances and conditions of planet Earth. ‘Plugging in’ to the international flow of goods and information commonly results in ‘tuning out’ connections with the immediate surroundings. This essay highlights the capacity of the un-aided mind and body to explore the wondrous complexity of planet Earth. The first part presents four artists who, by engaging geological, biological, and meteorological components of their surroundings, exchange dematerialized surfing activities offered by the World Wide Web, for …

This thesis examines how graphic design collaboration ignites social change within a community and inspires transformation in human behavior. It explores how designing for the greater good impacts our society; and how these collaborative experiences improve the community and clients they serve. This thesis …
How To Visually Represent The Colour Theory Of Thermochromic Inks, Marjan Kooroshnia
How To Visually Represent The Colour Theory Of Thermochromic Inks, Marjan Kooroshnia
Experiential Knowledge (EKSIG) Conference Series
Colour theories have been established in order to allow artists and designers to understand the relationship between colours, and to determine how a chosen colour will react or interact with another. Smart colours - such as leuco dye-based thermochromic inks - have entered into the textile and fashion design world, bringing with them new challenges. This paper stresses the fact that, in order to demonstrate and describe the behaviour of these inks at different temperatures when printed on textiles, a new colour system is required. Four design experiments using thermochromic inks are described and these, along with the discussion presented, …
Digital Expressionism And Christopher Wheeldon’S Alice’S Adventures In Wonderland: What Contemporary Choreographers Can Learn From Early Twentieth-Century Modernism, Kelly Oden
Butler Journal of Undergraduate Research
How can classical ballet adapt to a world that is in an ever more rapid state of flux? By uncovering an example of the kind of interdisciplinary artistic collaboration that contributed to the thriving artistic environment of the early twentieth century, a model for artistic success emerges. By examining modernism and Sergei Diaghilev’s Ballets Russes in relation to Christopher Wheeldon’s groundbreaking 2011 ballet Alice’s Adventures in Wonderland, a correlation between the success of the Ballets Russes and the success of Wheeldon is exposed. I argue that by applying the modernist practice of interdisciplinary interaction to his own productions, Wheeldon …

Folding Forms, Susan Tibbitts
Folding Forms, Susan Tibbitts
All Graduate Plan B and other Reports, Spring 1920 to Spring 2023
“Folding Forms” is a creative research project that examined the process of converting two-dimensional graphics into three-dimensional forms for architectural and interior use. The work required a non-linear, design process involving hand sketching, digital graphics, printing, scoring, cutting and folding, resulting in conceptual, folded paper forms. Extensive prototype and exploratory models were built to achieve the desired outcome. The seemingly simple graphics produce complex forms.
Architecture As Drawing: Representational Space Architecturally Transformed, Andrew Arkell
Architecture As Drawing: Representational Space Architecturally Transformed, Andrew Arkell
Architecture Undergraduate Honors Theses
This thesis project was motivated by the premise that a drawing could take on architectural meaning beyond its initial performance as a re-presentation of an architectural idea. Initially, there existed the goal to create a drawing that was architecture. In the creation of a process wherein the drawing is the research, however, there comes an understanding that a drawing may never be literal architecture; although, the means by which the drawing is created might be architectural, or at the very least, speak to ideals which are fundamental to the creation, to the process, of architecture itself.
