A Participatory Action Study Investigating Implementing Democratic Teaching Practices In An Eighth Grade Art Classroom Using Critical Pedagogy, Kari M. Achatz

Art Education Projects

This qualitative action research study investigated the question "What might an eighth grade art classroom look like in practice? For eight weeks, 20 middle school students participated in a democratic art classroom. Using a theoretical lens of critical pedagogy I employed democratic teaching practices and asked students to create a work of art based on a social issue that they were passionate about. Through the course of this study students used their art as a way to voice their concerns about social issues and social injustices in the world. My research included data gathered from student interviews, student response papers, …

Un/Becoming Digital: The Ontology Of Technological Determinism And Its Implications For Art Education, Alison Colman Jan 2005

Un/Becoming Digital: The Ontology Of Technological Determinism And Its Implications For Art Education, Alison Colman

Journal of Social Theory in Art Education

Artists have been experimenting with analog and digital technologies since the 1960's; early examples include Billy Khiver's Experiments in Art and Technology (E.A.T.) and Nam June Paik (1966). While countless artists have since made highly innovative use of new media such as the computer, artificial intelligence (AD, biotech, the Internet and the World Wide Web, LED, motion capture, gesture tracking, CPS, open source, and robotics, artist/ theorists such as Penny (1995), Lovejoy (1997), Weibel (1996; 2001) and Wilson (2002) have cautioned against appropriating deterministic engineering models underlying such technologies.(l)These models, predominant in commercial industry, government and the military, embrace efficiency, …

In The Realm Of The “Real”: Outsider Art And Its Paradoxes For Art Educators, Jan Jagodzinski Jan 2005

In The Realm Of The “Real”: Outsider Art And Its Paradoxes For Art Educators, Jan Jagodzinski

Journal of Social Theory in Art Education

In this essay I want to argue that un (becoming) is a word much like Freud's (1919) discussion of the word unheimlich (uncanny), which reveals a secretive and clandestine aspect of art that art educators must and should concern themselves with, since it identifies a "realm of the Real" whose abjection legitimates our very practice at its expense. It marks a return of the repressed. Un (becoming), like Freud's uncanny is visual art's non-reflected double as I attempt to show. This is the issue I wish to raise when it comes to the question of so-called "Outsider art," sometimes referred …

This project was developed to provide art teachers with a curriculum that would give beginning art students foundational knowledge in art. This project focuses on teaching students a basic foundation for creating and understanding art while incorporating the four disciplines of DBAE. Through an interconnected art curriculum, students will gain a greater understanding of art due to the careful organization of the lessons and student-involved classroom assessment.

“Catching Sight Of The Permanent Possibility Of War:” Images Of Totality And Words Of Peace, Norm Friesen Jan 2004

“Catching Sight Of The Permanent Possibility Of War:” Images Of Totality And Words Of Peace, Norm Friesen

Journal of Social Theory in Art Education

In Totality and Infinity (1969), a landmark critique of the Western philosophical tradition, Emmanuel Levinas poses the provocative question: "Does not lucidity, the mind's openness on the true, consist in catching sight of the permanent possibility of war" (21)? Levinas asks, in other words, whether knowledge of the truth as truth has been "seen” in the western philosophical tradition? is in some fundamental way related to the war.

Critical Creativity: On The Convergence Of Medium Education And Media Education, Michael J. Emme Jan 2002

Critical Creativity: On The Convergence Of Medium Education And Media Education, Michael J. Emme

Journal of Social Theory in Art Education

Days after the September 11, 2001 attacks on the World Trade Center in the United States I heard an interview on the radio. The short exchange, with peace educator and activist Johan Galtung, not surprisingly in light of world events, focused on conflict resolution. While I was impressed by professor Galtung's commitment to peacemaking and his real experience serving as a mediator in world conflicts, what struck me most was the word he used to describe the key ingredient in conflict resolution. That word was 'creativity'. As an artist, art educator, academic and parent I suppose it makes sense that …

Beyond Skills To Meaning: Artists As Healers And Implications For Art Educators, Lucinda Lee Blackstone Jan 2001

Beyond Skills To Meaning: Artists As Healers And Implications For Art Educators, Lucinda Lee Blackstone

Theses Digitization Project

Art definitions and movements are changing just as the social paradigms they spring from. This exploration looked at paradigms in art of the past that have become the foundation for movements today. Currently the transformative powers art has to offer have been recognized. Colleges are beginning to train a major and a career. The literature review explored what role transformative art has played in artists' lives and looked at its uses in education. Conceptual art goes beyond the aesthetics of art and touches the mind and heart. I began to explore this kind of art in the nearby galleries. I …

The problem was to investigate the effects of both active learning and direct instruction (lecture/demonstration) on students' ability to produce a continuous tone, ten step gray scale, black and white photographic print.

The researcher arranged for a college instructor of photography to teach two intact classes of General Photography using the two instructional methods. The objectives for both classes were the same. Each student in both groups completed eight photographic assignments. After twelve (12) weeks of instruction and studio/lab work, each student …

Finding Meaning For Postmodernism, John Wilton Jan 1992

Finding Meaning For Postmodernism, John Wilton

Journal of Social Theory in Art Education

Recent media hype throughout the land has brought wide-spread conversation on the phenomenon known as postmodernism. True to its nature, the media (while propelling the rapid dissemination of the term itself) gives us very little insight into the history/meaning/concepts/origin/definition or effects of the now quite fashionable designation.

Editorial, Harold Pearse Jan 1991

Editorial, Harold Pearse

Journal of Social Theory in Art Education

Since the visual is at the core of our work as art educators, we, the editors, are giving special attention to reflecting and addressing that concern. Two of the articles in this issue feature photographs - Roddy and VanWinkle's report on the role of photographs in community self-empowerment and Barbara Lounder's reflections on The One Year Show, an exhibition in response to the "Montreal Massacre". Both articles rely on images to tell their story as much as they depend on words. Indeed, the reproductions of the pieces in The One Year Show are presented as a folio, as a self-contained …

Feminist Film Theory And Art Education, Michael J. Emme Jan 1991

Feminist Film Theory And Art Education, Michael J. Emme

Journal of Social Theory in Art Education

Every ten years or so, lonely voices make themselves heard in the art education literature shouting something like ‘Pay attention to the “newer media” (Lanier, 1966, p.7), or ‘Have you heard? There a “new image world” (Nadaner, 1985, p.9) out there.’ One writer even suggested that “directed, critical inquiry of [television] will extend knowledge in art and aesthetics and enhance the quality of peoples’ lives (Degge, 1985, p.85) Despite these sporadic exhortations, Jaglom and Gardner’s (1981) observation that “our culture has not yet invented ways of presenting [the mass media] or teaching its structure to children” (p.35) is still true …

Cultural Literacy As Social Empowerment, Laurie Hicks Jan 1989

Cultural Literacy As Social Empowerment, Laurie Hicks

Journal of Social Theory in Art Education

The concept of cultural literacy as a process of becoming socially empowered is developed. A comparison is made between “Getty-ized DBAE” with an approach to art education informed by the development of cultural literacy. How these approaches differ, not only in their design but in the fundamental goals which motivate and guide them is illustrated. An outline is presented of a pedagogical structure around which a cultural literacy approach to art education can be organized and implemented.
