Public Housing In The United States: Using Sustainable Urbanism To Combat Social Exclusion, Jasmine L. Edo
Public Housing In The United States: Using Sustainable Urbanism To Combat Social Exclusion, Jasmine L. Edo
Scripps Senior Theses
The United States government has taken steps to assure underprivileged citizens housing in the form of public housing through the Department of Housing and Urban Development, as well as various humanitarian programs in the form of homeless shelters. Yet, all housing is not equal. Our freedom to choose where we live and what type of house we live in is one revered aspect of life as a United States citizen. We can express our individuality, creativity, and personality through the architectural style of our homes. In this sense it is hard to ask for equal housing. I am suggesting that …
North Bottoms: A Participatory Redevelopment And Sustainable Community Engagement Process, Andrea C. Koerner
North Bottoms: A Participatory Redevelopment And Sustainable Community Engagement Process, Andrea C. Koerner
Community and Regional Planning Program: Professional Projects
This project addressed the economic, social, and environmental ill effects occurring in the North Bottoms in Lincoln, Nebraska. This neighborhood requires the use of innovative community engagement to counteract minimal resources, civic engagement, and social capital in order to accomplish sustainable redevelopment when traditional methods have been unsuccessful. The initial goal of the project was to involve citizens in the design process to create an effective and development strategy and design project for the neighborhood.
Although traditional methods were sufficient to develop a comprehensive approach to sustainable development, it became obvious through engagement with citizens and civic officials that a …

The southern, eastern, and northern façades (the principal façades) have a great amount of decorative masonry including granite, slate coursing, brownstone coursing, and brick veneer (Photo 2). All of these materials are in good condition, except for the brownstone, which is deteriorating in areas that are connected to a wrought iron balustrade. The surface of the brownstone is face-beded, and the corrosion of the iron in contact with the stone has caused oxide jacking. All of the masonry has environmental staining.

It is recommended that the iron fire escapes on the east and west elevations be removed because they do not meet current fire codes as a proper means of egress from the building. The metal railings should also be removed and replaced with railings that meet current building code with a proper height.

Impacts Of Transit Oriented Developments (Tod) And Mixed Use Centers (Muc) In Dallas-Fort Worth Metroplex On Housing Values And Demographic Composition, Narasimha Pratap Mandapaka
Planning Dissertations - Archive
Suburban sprawl was attributed to be the cause of number of problems such as traffic congestion, depletion of natural resources, and decreasing air quality. Over the past two decades, policy makers and smart growth proponents encouraged Transit-Oriented Developments (TOD) and Mixed Use Centers (MUC) to increase transit ridership and development density; revitalize inner-city neighborhoods; improve environmental quality and livability; and to counteract suburban sprawl and real estate market forces in various communities in the U.S. Though many policy makers, urban planners, environmentalists see significant opportunities in sustainable development, there have been concerns related to affordability of housing combined with transportation, …

Finding Common Ground Part I: Understanding Growth Centers In Rhode Island, Edgar Adams, Brian Boisvert
Architecture, Art, and Historic Preservation Faculty Publications
Abstract: A successful Growth Management strategy must seek to find "Common Ground" between the needs of growing communities and the natural environment that supports them, between the past and the future and between the desires for social and environmental justice. In short, they seek a more sustainable way forward. 2011 marks the five-year anniversary of the introduction of Rhode Island's Land Use 2025 State Guide Plan. With this plan, Rhode Island adopted a hybrid solution to address the needs of the unique range of Urban, Suburban and Rural communities within its borders. Urban and suburban communities were accommodated within a …

Razing Lafitte: Defending Public Housing From A Hostile State, Leigh Graham
Razing Lafitte: Defending Public Housing From A Hostile State, Leigh Graham
Publications and Research
The contentious politics of the demolition of Lafitte public housing in post- Katrina New Orleans and its replacement with mixed-income properties is a telling case of the strategic conflicts housing advocates face in public housing revitalization. It reveals how the qualified outcomes of HOPE VI interact with local institutional and historical circumstances to confound the equity and social justice goals of housing and community development advocates. It shows the limits to public housing revitalization as an urban recovery strategy when hostile government leadership characterizes a region, and the state is recast as an adversary rather than revitalization partner. This case …

From "The Projects" To Houses : Physical Redevelopment, Poverty Deconcentration, And Resident Self-Sufficiency Impacts On Public Housing Residents At Hope Iv Developments In Camden, New Jersey, Michael C. Brown
Dissertations
Since 1992, public housing authorities (PHAs) throughout the United States have been building public housing rental and owner-occupied housing in place of demolished or rehabilitated distressed public housing and simultaneously attempting to deconcentrate poverty and improve self-sufficiency among the affected residents. The distressed housing is usually dilapidated, poorly designed, poorly constructed, poorly maintained, and poorly managed; the residents are very poor, are in constant fear of crime and violence, and have little hope. Previous attempts to address these problems have been piecemeal and often inadequate.
Based on recommendations by the National Commission on Severely Distressed Public Housing in 1992, the …

Assessment And Impact Of Gentrified Public Housing Neighborhoods In The United States: A Case Study Of Chicago, Todd W. Sink
All-Inclusive List of Electronic Theses and Dissertations
Social-mix housing policies play a unique role in shaping the geography of gentrification in cities throughout the U.S. and Europe. The HOPE VI program in the U.S. is one popular example. Since its inception in 1992, HOPE VI has simultaneously displaced thousands of urban poor from their homes and neighborhoods, reduced their housing opportunities, and created and encouraged housing development for a more affluent population. Yet over the years, very few empirical studies have emerged that examine the place-based outcomes of HOPE VI within the context of gentrification. As such, important empirical questions remain unanswered. This study focuses on the …

Addressing Renewable Energy Development At The Local Level By Learning How To Plan Through Green Building: An Example Of Community-Based Planning On The Navajo Reservation, Gepetta S. Billie
Architecture and Planning ETDs
This thesis considers energy development, specifically how the Navajo Nation can address renewable energy development at the local chapter level by incorporating green building strategies into housing planning and development. The objective is to make sense of how individual Navajo chapters, like Tsé Łichii, can learn to plan and build better housing through green building techniques with the ultimate goal of addressing energy on the Navajo reservation. Through planning theory and ideas for how to apply these concepts to individual chapter needs, this thesis will explain how the Navajo Nation as a whole can plan for sustainable renewable energy development …

Master's Theses
The City of McFarland, CA is in the process of updating its General Plan and identified updating the land use element as the first step in this process. This land use element consists of a land use diagram, land use standards, and goals, policies, and programs. These components of the document are based upon community feedback as well as upon analysis of case studies and state and regional guidelines. The final plan accommodates for increased residential densities, a mixture of adjacent land uses, a greenbelt, and large areas of land adjacent to Highway 99 for commercial and industrial use.
Dead End Urban Corridors: Reconnecting Urban Space, Molly Macklin
Dead End Urban Corridors: Reconnecting Urban Space, Molly Macklin
Architecture Masters of Science Program: Theses
This proposal seeks to look at urban renewal through the analysis of main street thoroughfares that weave through the urban fabric connecting neighborhoods and people as vital life-lines within cities. How does history, culture, economics, and existing infrastructure feed these corridors? And what happens when this artery is blocked by development?
Specifically, this thesis is focused on exploring a non-urban oriented, dead-end corridor typology that has been forced onto the urban main street resulting in an area that has become blighted, underutilized, and disconnected from the surrounding urban environment.
The main argument is aimed at critiquing overlaying typologies onto …

Home/Land: Kiowa, New Mexico- A Grassland's Story, Heather R. Yaryan
Architecture and Planning ETDs
The purpose of this thesis was to illustrate how cultural and natural histories inform place-based community planning. Utilizing both cultural and natural histories, the planner may begin to see patterns of habitancy as they correlate to ecological fluctuations. I focused my research on Kiowa, New Mexico the community my family homesteaded in the grasslands of Northeastern New Mexico and took an auto-ethnographic approach to conducting my research. The story of Kiowa is both unique and universal. The intricacies of the land and people are, indeed, woven into a specific place and times. It is the intersection of Place and of …

Developing A Drought Planning Evaluation System In The United States, Mark D. Svoboda, Zhenghong Tang
Developing A Drought Planning Evaluation System In The United States, Mark D. Svoboda, Zhenghong Tang
Community and Regional Planning Program: Faculty Scholarly and Creative Activity
Drought is a normal part of the climate cycle, affecting every climate regime on the planet. Drought indicates a special period in which an unusual moisture scarcity causes a serious hydrological imbalance. Drought is related to the timing and effectiveness of the rains, high temperature, high wind, and low humidity. The typical impacts of drought may include dry lands, low or empty water-supply reservoirs, low groundwater levels (dried up wells), crop damage, and ensuing environmental degradation. In the United States, drought accounts for losses in the billions of dollars. In fact, a FEMA (1995) report estimates the average annual losses …
