Ceramic Analysis Of The Blackduck Ware And Its General Cultural Relationships, G. Edward Evans

Journal of the Minnesota Academy of Science

The present paper involves the ceramic analysis section of a more comprehensive study relating to the seven most extensively excavated Blackduck focus sites in Minnesota. The pottery from the sites analyzed falls into three ware categories: the Blackduck ware, the Laurel or Rainy River ware, and a third unidentified ware. The Blackduck ware, which is the one with which we are primarily concerned, has been generally described by Lloyd A. Wilford several times (1941, 1955). His description of the pottery may be taken as a general ware description, although there are several details that need clarification. The· ware may be …

Since publication of the first report on the Folsom site in 1927 much has been written on the subject of Folsom and other fluted points. There is, however, no current synthetic of information on fluted points. This paper is an attempt to synthesize the existing data on this subject. An effort will be made to show the significance of fluted points and their place in North American archaeology. Previous efforts dealing with this subject will be discussed with emphasis on terminology used, typologies established, and distribution studies made. The Central Plains has become an increasingly important  area of archeological research during the last half century.  The major culture complexes have been identified, the chronological sequences of these cultures have been determined, and  the general framework or Central Plains prehistory has been  outlined. Three main time periods are recognized for the Central Plains on the basis of a combined stratigraphic and  dendrochronological study (Ohampe, 1946). These three general  time divisions are, identified as beginning with the oldest: the Lithic, the Ceramic, and the Historic Periods. The Ceramic Period is further divided into the Early, Middle, and  Late divisions. The …

That which seems perhaps more interesting then any other concerns the early Anasazi horizons which are variously described as "the Basket Makers," "Basket Maker II and III,” and "the Basket Maker culture." During the summer of 1949 the University of New Mexico Field Sessions in Anthropology undertook the excavation of a site located on the Albert Harrington Ranch some thirty miles due west of Albuquerque, New Mexico. Eight under-graduates participated in the work under the supervision of the author, a graduate student in Archaeology. The site was a blown out spring situated near Correo, three and one half miles southwest of the Santa Fe Railway coal and water station in Suwanee. The name "Correo Snake Pit" was assigned to the excavation.

Problems Arising From The Surface Occurrence Of Archaeological Material In Southeastern Chihuahua, Mexico, Garland J. Marrs

An examination of the topography represented on five different maps of the state of Chihuahua, Mexico, demonstrated a remarkable degree of uniformity physiographic features in the northeastern part of the state. In the latter instance, at least, one point of agreement concerned the existence of a “Bolson de Mapimi.” While the existence of the feature appeared to be assured, its location varied with the different maps. Not only was the variation north and south, but also east and west, with some maps having the larger extent of the basin in Coahuila while others located the feature almost entirely in Chihuahua.

The direct-historical approach in archaeology assumes the existence of an analogous relationship between historic accounts and prehistoric data, serving to establish cultural identity under the basis of cultural continuity. In this article, Dr. Waldo Wedel uses the direct-historical approach to review some preliminary findings of archaeological investigations undertaken as part of an early effort to study the Pawnee culture of eastern Nebraska. The University of Nebraska Archeological Survey was established in 1929, led by Dr. W. D. Strong, in an attempt to better understand prehistoric Pawnee culture. The present study was begun with the aim of determining what ceramic types are present in the Rio Puerco valley of the East, with consideration of their source, extent, variations and contributing factors. Due to the limitations of time the investigation was confined to the south-central portion of the area. Because the region is approximately one hundred and forty miles in length, from the northern headwaters of the Rio Puerco to the junction of the Rio Grande and Rio Puerco, it was considered best to limit the survey to a portion of the valley large enough to yield sufficient data …

The recent report of the discovery of a prehistoric rock shelter or cave habitation site on the St. Croix River was received with considerable interest, for such sites have often been the source of important information in the field of archaeology. However, they are very rare in the Northwest; and, although in southern Minnesota there are in some places many caves and shelters, there is no evidence, with very few exceptions, that any of them was ever occupied.
