This dissertation critically analyzes home and community gardens within Metro-Orlando by considering the ways that the COVID-19 pandemic impacts residents' garden participation and access to green public spaces. The study utilizes an ethnographic approach to produce informed understandings of participants' experiences within local gardens, alternative food networks, and community supported agriculture analyzed using Marxian theoretical frameworks. Findings are primarily grounded in qualitative information derived from interviews, participant observation, and photovoice. Data were collected both prior to the global COVID-19 outbreak and over subsequent months of lockdown and public health mitigation measures. Military officials kidnapped, tortured and killed between 10,000 and 30,000 Argentine citizens, who were thought of as “guerrillas” supporting the leftist government and the late president Juan Perón. These victims are regarded as the disappeared, or Los Desaparecidos; due to the fact their families had no knowledge of where their loved ones were taken, or what was happening to them. This thesis delves into the experiences of young Latinx women, exploring how they internalize societal messages propagated through social media that equate whiteness with wellness and beauty standards. Conversations with young LatinX women reveal that performances of whiteness intertwine with dietary practices and notions of thinness, influencing their perceptions and behaviors. This internalization leads to harmful tendencies of body surveillance and diet restriction in an attempt to conform to dominant social media norms. Furthermore, this messaging can result in the rejection of ethnic foods and adversely impact their overall well-being. Nourishing Connections: Chinese Immigrant Identity In Tokyo Through Commensality And Hospitality, Sarai Brown

This paper explores how Chinese immigrants in Tokyo, Japan preserve their cultural identity through practices of commensality and hospitality in stark contrast to Japanese culture. In Chinese culture, hospitality – mainly acts of food sharing – is how kinship relations are built and maintained, eventually growing into an important hierarchy network that ultimately builds a fully realized identity created out of communal belonging. Japanese culture in this sense is not as hospitable, deeming food-sharing as an extremely private and high-risk affair that is considered low-risk in Chinese contexts.

In this article I present experiences of Egyptians too young to have taken part in the street protests and movement of the 2011 revolution. Today in their early twenties, they narrate their experiences during the early months of the uprising. None claimed to be revolutionaries then or now, but the revolution seems to animate them in complex and long-lasting ways. การศึกษาวิจัยในครั้งนี้มีวัตถุประสงค์เพื่อศึกษาความต้องการในการจัดการหลังความตายของคนเมืองในพื้นที่กรุงเทพมหานคร โดยใช้วิธีการศึกษาแบบผสมผสาน (Mixed Method) ด้วยการวิจัยเชิงปริมาณและการวิจัยเชิงคุณภาพ โดยวิธีการสุ่มแบบโควต้า (Quota Sampling) จำนวน 400 ราย โดยแบ่งเป็นชาวพุทธ 200 ราย ชาวอิสลาม 120 ราย ชาวคริสต์ 60 ราย และผู้ไม่นับถือศาสนา 20 ราย และจากวิธีการวิจัยเชิงคุณภาพ ด้วยการสัมภาษณ์แบบกึ่งโครงสร้าง (Semi-structured Interview) จำนวน 20 ราย โดยแบ่งเป็น ชาวพุทธ 8 ราย ชาวอิสลาม 6 ราย ชาวคริสต์ 3 ราย และผู้ไม่นับถือศาสนา 3 ราย จากประชากรในพื้นที่กรุงเทพมหานคร โดยข้อมูลเชิงปริมาณได้นำมาวิเคราะห์ด้วยสถิติไคสแควร์ (Chi-Square) และนำข้อมูลเชิงคุณภาพมาวิเคราะห์ร่วมกัน ผลการศึกษาพบว่า ความต้องการในการจัดการหลังความตายส่วนใหญ่ในด้านของการจัดการร่าง (ศพ) คือ ต้องการจัดการในรูปแบบประเพณีนิยมที่เป็นในลักษณะของการฝังหรือการเผา รองลงมาคือ การบริจาคร่างกายเพื่อเป็นประโยชน์ทางการแพทย์ ต่อมาในส่วนของการจัดการเกี่ยวกับพิธีกรรมศพ พบว่า ความต้องการของกลุ่มตัวอย่างส่วนใหญ่คือ ต้องการจัดการตามแบบศาสนาทุกขั้นตอน รองลงมาคือ ต้องการทำตามแบบทางศาสนาแต่ไม่ต้องการปฏิบัติตามทุกขั้นตอน และในส่วนของการจัดการเกี่ยวกับร่องรอยที่เกิดขึ้นบนแพลตฟอร์มดิจิทัลพบว่า ส่วนใหญ่ต้องการให้ปล่อยบัญชีของตนเองไว้ตามปกติหากจากไปแล้ว ไม่ต้องมีการจัดการใด ๆ รองลงมาคือ ต้องการจัดการด้วยการฝากฝังบุคคลอื่นให้ช่วยดำเนินการปิดบัญชีให้ ผลการทดสอบสมมติฐานพบว่า ปัจจัยที่มีความสัมพันธ์กับความต้องการในการจัดการหลังความตายของคนเมืองในพื้นที่กรุงเทพมหานครคือ ปัจจัยส่วนบุคคลในด้านของ อาชีพและ ระดับการศึกษา ต่อมาคือ ปัจจัยทางศาสนาหรือความเชื่อ และปัจจัยที่เกี่ยวข้องกับสังคมเมืองในด้านของสิ่งที่ต้องการหรือคาดหวังมากที่สุดเมื่อได้จากโลกนี้ไปแล้ว

This paper will focus on how forensic archaeology should be used for wildfire and other fire-related fatalities or investigations, what happens to bone when exposed to heat, what protocols should be in place and how an excavation should look, and finally the challenges of fire-related investigations. Following the Daubert v. Merrell Dow Pharmaceuticals (1993) ruling three decades ago, guidelines were established for determining the reliability and validity of expert testimony in court. These guidelines include considerations of whether the theory and methodologies employed have been tested, the establishment of potential or known error rates, and the existence and maintenance of the standards (Christensen, 2004). Testifying in court as an expert witness has become a critical role as a forensic anthropologist. In Pakistan, the enormous 2010 floods inflicted unprecedented destruction to 0.5 million houses in South Punjab. This study was conducted in Muzaffargarh, a district of the Punjab province of Pakistan, one of the worst affected areas during the 2010 floods. As an adaptation and disaster risk reduction measure, an International NGO in collaboration with the Government of the Punjab province constructed 1274 houses for flood-affected communities. The houses were allocated through a lottery method. Initially, the allottees moved to the new settlements for the sake of possession. In May and June of 2019 and 2021, a field school from the Fiske Center for Archaeological Research at the University of Massachusetts Boston, in partnership with Plimoth Patuxet Museums (formerly Plimoth Plantation) and the Town of Plymouth, undertook their final two seasons of work as part of Project 400: The Plymouth Colony Archaeological Survey. Excavations had been taking place yearly in Plymouth since the summer of 2013. Archaeology and cultural evolution theory both predict that environmental variation and population size drive the likelihood of inventions (via individual learning) and their conversion to population-wide innovations (via social uptake). We use the case study of the adoption of the bow and arrow in the Great Basin to infer how patterns of cultural variation, invention, and innovation affect investment in new technologies over time and the conditions under which we could predict cultural innovation to occur. Using an agent-based simulation to investigate the conditions that manifest in the innovation of technology, we find the following: (1) increasing ecological variation results …
