The traditional religion of the Tzotzil Indians of Chiapas, Mexico is a blend of ancient Maya and Spanish Catholic elements. Recently Protestant missionaries and lay workers have entered the area, with varying degrees of success. One of these evangelizing· movements has been carried out by members of the Seventh-day Adventist church, with a great deal of success in some areas.

This study dealt with the selection process and role expectations associated with the sponsor or godparent among Mexican American and Anglo-American Catholics. The primary purpose was to answer four questions: (1) Who is selected to be a godparent; (2) How he or she is chosen: (3) When the godparent is selected; and (4) What the parents expect the godparent to do for the child. In order to answer these questions a sample of families selected by the priests of three parishes differing with respect to ethnic composition was interviewed. In archaeology, the concept of technology has, heretofore, been utilized primarily as a descriptive vehicle for comparing prehistoric flaking techniques. This dissertation demonstrates that prehistoric technology can be adequately and accurately identified and defined by quantitative techniques; further, that the particular technology, the Julian Technology, from the Fisherman Lake archaeological locality, can be explained in terms of functional specificity. Analyses of six archaeological sites and their contents incorporated statistical analysis of metric attributes taken on flaking detritus. Initially, the attributes which were significantly different between Julian and non-Julian materials were identified. Subsequently, a hypothetical relationship between these attributes and the …

The Ethnohistory Of Baker Cabin, A Clackamas County Pioneer Site, V. Claire Woodward

Baker Cabin, a pioneer log structure, is located on privately owned property near the community of Carver, Oregon. According to traditional accounts the cabin has existed continuously on this site since its construction in 1856. Archaeological excavations of the cabin's foundation and the surrounding area uncovered date-able artifacts and a second foundation with an associated well. Analysis of the artifacts associated with the present cabin foundation indicate a post-1870 construction date those associated with the second foundation and its well indicate an 1850’s occupation.

Noun-Verb Relationships In Arikara Syntax, Francesca C. Merlan

A partial syntactic description of Arikara is presented, with primary emphasis on the relationships of nouns to verbs in the language. Major types of surface intransitive and transitive constructions are described. A transformational description of person agreement in the verb is presented. Major types of pos­sessive constructions are examined. Finally, the process of noun incorporation, characteristic of the Caddoan language family generally, is examined, and evidence is presented for the direct role played by nominal features in Arikara syntax.

ln the course of a community study of a Dominican municipality focusing on political leadership, it become apparent that a structural-functional account of political organization should be supplemented by an approach through which we might deal with the instability characterizing the formal political system.

Network analysis techniques were applied to on examination of political transactions between leaders; this was supplemented by a structure1-functiona I analysis of political institutions and formal organizations directly or indirectly involved in political competition .

A number of aspects of the life style and material culture of a mountain settlement in Eastern Kentucky are studied to provide a portrait of life in that region in the early part of this century.

The Hensley Settlement was established about 1903 when two families, the Hensleys and the Gibbonses, moved onto a 509 acre survey on top of Brush Mountain near Middlesboro, Kentucky. luring the course of almost forty—eight years on the mountain, the settlers multiplied into a community of over eighty people and constructed in excess of 100 log buildings. Analysis of theme, style and structure of the chanted sermons of a Virginia preacher shows that the chanted sermon is a powerful ritualistic expression in certain communities. As practiced among Afro-American groups the chanted sermon is a ritual expression which serves to resolve conflicts, affirm values, and meet certain socio-psychological needs.

Procedures For The Processing, Cataloging, And Classification Of A Non-Circulating Historical Art Print Collection, Linda Ray

In order to establish specific procedures for processing, cataloging and classifying the art print collection at the Kentucky Library, Western Kentucky University, data were gathered from three sources. These were: (1) information on current procedures used in the Kentucky Library, obtained through an interview with Riley Handy, the Kentucky Librarian (2) a search of related literature and (3) a questionnaire survey of other institution having art print collections.

It was found that historically valuable art prints, which are used primarily as documentary resources, need to be carefully processed and stored so as to preserve and protect them from damaging effects …

At the request of the Horry County Airport Commission, the Institute of Archeology and Anthropology, University of South Carolina, conducted an archeological survey on the grounds of a proposed terminal building, access road, and auto parking area on land presently within the confines of the United States Air Force's Myrtle Beach, South Carolina Base. The survey was conducted on April 9, 1975, and indicated that there were no significant historic or prehistoric archeological sites in or near the areas to be affected by construction. The results of an archaeological survey of North Cottonwood Canyon, San Juan County, southeastern Utah, are herein reported.

The purpose and background leading up to the survey are followed by a physical description of the canyon and a description of the 36 archaeological sites recorded. The cultural material collected and/or observed at the sites, including architecture, ceramics, and other miscellaneous artifacts, is described and discussed. This is followed by a distributional analysis between sites. This includes altitude, slope, water resources, and vegetation. Cultural materials in North Cottonwood Canyon are then compared with materials from related areas, including Montezuma Canyon, Beef …
