Ye'kwana Basketry: Its Cultural Context, Raymond B. Hames, Ilene Hames

The aim of this article is to describe an aspect of Ye'kwana (Makiritare) technology, basketry, in its overall cultural context. We will not only describe basketry as technology per se but the role it plays in Ye'kwana symbolism, ecology, economy and social organization. Also, we will discuss its role in inter-village and inter-ethnic trade and how this role has implications for understanding socio-cultural change in the immediate area of the Padamo River Basin, Territorio Federal Amazonas, Venezuela.

The collection consists of Dr. Bryant’s professional and organizational files, biographical data, correspondence, and speeches. Most of the material relates to her publishing efforts, her work as a faculty member at Brooklyn College, and her involvement with professional organizations, especially the New York branch of the American Association of University Women. Most of the material extends form 1950-1975. A list of the more prominent individuals who corresponded with Margaret Bryant has been included as an appendix to the inventory. What people owe one another can affect their relationships. This notion is extended into the credit relations between social classes, and the nature of their credit transactions. Thus, in the society of peasants and elites under consideration, the question being answered is, "What are the lines of credit, and what are the social implications of these arrangements?" The locale of this investigation was the municipio of São Caetano in the state of Pernambuco in Northeast Brazil. This is located within the semi-arid Agreste region, a transitional zone between the abundantly-watered coast and the parched backlands of Northeast Brazil. The study …

The culture of tobacco has been associated with the history of Kentucky almost from the beginning and remains to this day a vital force in the state’s economy. In this age of scientific and technological advances – of increasing automation – we find that in tobacco farming, hand labor still figures prominently in the production of a major staple crop. This has resulted in the retention of traditional method, technology and terminology, long since lost in the culture of other crops which lent themselves more easily to mechanization.

The problem considered was the nature of traditional Appalachian chairmaking in a northern metropolis. The subject was an Appalachian migrant who moved to Cincinnati, Ohio. Culture change was viewed through the sociological, socioeconomic, and cultural effects of urbanization. Fieldwork focused on interrelated factors of individual personality, style and creativity, and chair production. Information on the chairmaker's background was extracted from Michael Owen Jones's, "Chairmaking in Appalachia: A Study in Style and Creative Imagination In American Folk Art" (Ph.D. dissertation, Indiana University, 1970).

Regional Data In Historic Archeology: Examples From Environmental Impact Surveys, John H. House

The emphasis on regional vs. single site data in prehistoric archeology is related to the assumption that culture is an adaptive behavioral system articulated with the natural and social environments. The testing of hypotheses and models about the nature of past societies in the historic period likewise requires regional data, not all of which may be available in the historical record. Archeological survey data--including those generated by Environmental Impact studies and other specific contract research--may be relevant to measuring cultural variables of historic period societies on a regional basis. Cultural Pressure On Sex Differences, Patricia Draper

This paper suggests that sex differences in the behavior of children exist but are not necessarily intensified under certain cultural conditions. Under conditions of culture change to a sedentary economy, certain elements of male and female differentiated behavior are exploited in the process of increasing sex differentiation.

Bokkos Fulani Pastoralism: Human And Herd Regulation In A Complex Ecological Setting, Joseph V. Hickey

This is a study of a Pastoral Fulani group residing in the vicinity of Bokkos, a market village forty-seven miles south of Jos in the Federal Republic of Nigeria. The Bokkos Fulani adaptation is relatively unique among Fulani pastoralists, because they do not live at the margins of a farming community, but inhabit and pasture cattle on the land of Ron agriculturalists.

Fulani settled the uninhabited Bokkos Plains in the early 19001s after British pacification. At the same time Ron farmers began to vacate defensive clusters along the Bokkos river, and they too settled the Plains. The result of this …
