Applying the standards for delineating folkcraft developed by Japanese scholar Soetsu Yanagi to the work of two Maryland decoy makers, Lem and Steve Ward, revealed that the Wards’ work followed a progression from folk to non-folk. A Hearst newspaper chain article on the two carvers plus winning first place at the New York Decoy Show brought publicity far beyond that usually encountered by the average folk craftsman. These events also exposed the two brothers to a range of wealthy collectors. When the Wards began to experiment with ornately carved birds, they had a waiting, and financially capable market. Fandom Is A Way Of Life: A Folkloristic Ethnography Of Science Fiction Fandom, David Axler

A science fiction (“sf”) fan is an individual whose interest in this literary genre has extended past reading into involvement in such things as local science fiction clubs, fan magazines (“fanzines”), and sf conventions (“cons”). Science fiction fandom is the loosely-structured, geographically-dispersed organization of these fans. Drawing on both written sources and field interviews with eight informants, the history, composition and structure of sf fandom is examined from a folkloristic viewpoint. The forms of folklore which serve to bind the individual fan to the larger social entity of fandom are detailed.

This paper is a description and examination of an Academic Enrichment Program for students from a Bureau of Indian Affairs Day School in Stebbins, Alaska. Sixty Eskimo students travelled to Beaverton, Oregon in the winter of 1975, accompanied by their teachers and by village representatives. They were enrolled in Beaverton schools for a six-week period, and participated in a program designed to acquaint them with aspects of American culture previously known to them only through their textbooks.

This study attempts to explain a particular type of geographical distribution of central places (places with commercial functions). This distribution,, the dendritic system, appears in "underdeveloped" regions of the world and has six features as follows: (1) convergence of commercial networks on one regional urban hub; (2) a large number of rural centers per urban center; (3) a tendency for firms in each rural center to trade with those in only one urban center; (4) the failure of smaller centers to locate in the interstices of the trade areas of the larger centers; (5) a rural-urban contrast in class and …

The study and explanation of language acquisition has been approached from four major theoretical viewpoints. 1) The syntactic: what a child is mainly learning is grammatical structures, and the syntactic complexity of the language he is learning determines the sequence of acquisition; 2) The semantic: the child is really learning the meaning structures of language, and the semantic complexity of the adult language determines the sequence of acquisition; 3) The cognitive: as the child gains knowledge about the world around him, he tries to express it through language; the child's cognitive structures and therefore the major determinants of what he …

To date, the auction as a type of folklore performance has not been adequately researched. In order to place auctions in perspective as folklore, chapter one of this thesis reviews the history of auctions in the United States. Chapter one further presents the idea of the auctioneer as a folk occupational specialist. The second chapter is concerned with the skills of an active Kentucky auctioneer, who offers, during a series of interviews, insights concerning his performance skills. American society is a very mobile one, with approximately twenty percent of the populace changing its place of residence every year. It has been estimated that over two-thirds of all moves take place within the city. Geographic studies of intra-urban migration generally treat the relocations as either 1) movement from one areal unit to another, such as inter-census tract flows, or as 2) individual-level, unrelated moves between respective origins and destinations. In reality, however, each change of residence is one part of a much longer sequence of changes.

While all of these levels of categorization are important to the study of language acquisition, the purpose of this study is to explore the acquisition and development of word meaning. For this purp6se the categorization of environmental stimuli into named categories is of greatest interest. Recognizing the need for studies of non-hierarchically structured domains to shed light on the processes involved in the development of word meaning where order is not clearly indicated, this study examines data on the acquisition of weaving design terminology in two Cakchiquel speaking villages in Guatemala.

The purpose of the visit was to conduct four days of on-the-ground survey and limited testing in the southwestern area of the Fort Site where construction of college athletic facilities is planned. In the spring of 1976, test excavations were carried out by the Center for Archaeological Research of The University of Texas at San Antonio at the site of a small park to be built immediately north of the Spanish Governor1s Palace on Military Plaza in downtown San Antonio. Because of its proximity to one of the original structures built by the Spanish in the early 18th century, testing was deemed necessary to determine if remains of other early structures would be disturbed by the park construction.
