Maya Lithic Studies: Papers From The 1976 Belize Filed Symposium, Thomas R. Hester, Norman Hammond
Index of Texas Archaeology: Open Access Gray Literature from the Lone Star State
As a result of intensified archaeological activity in northern Belize, and specifically the work of the joint British Museum-Cambridge University research project (directed by Norman Hammond), a variety of new data have been obtained on the prehistory of this region. Of the many sites that have been mapped, tested, or otherwise investigated in the past few years, one stands out as a major center of ancient Maya lithic technology. This is the site of Colha, located south of Orange Walk Town, along the highway between that town and Belize City. Personnel of the British Museum-Cambridge University Corozal Project began limited …

The Carter Family: Traditional Sources For Song, Margaret Bulger
The Carter Family: Traditional Sources For Song, Margaret Bulger
Masters Theses & Specialist Projects
The recorded repertory of the original Carter Family was analyzed for traditional influences. Of the 119 songs examined, it was found that fifty-five, roughly one-fourth of their total repertory, have definite roots in one or more traditional sources. The Carters employed traditional texts within their repertory throughout their professional career. Three genres of song were analyzed: sentimental songs, religious songs, and ballads. Of these, sentimental songs was the largest category with 113 songs. These songs were found to be remarkably similar in thematic content and moral sensibilities to Victorian parlor songs (ca. 1860-1910). The religious songs were shown to be …

Chester Cornett: A Study Of The Effects Of Culture Change On A Traditional Kentucky Craftsman, Roger Beatty
Masters Theses & Specialist Projects
The problem considered was the nature of traditional Appalachian chairmaking in a northern metropolis. The subject was an Appalachian migrant who moved to Cincinnati, Ohio. Culture change was viewed through the sociological, socioeconomic, and cultural effects of urbanization. Fieldwork focused on interrelated factors of individual personality, style and creativity, and chair production. Information on the chairmaker's background was extracted from Michael Owen Jones's, "Chairmaking in Appalachia: A Study in Style and Creative Imagination In American Folk Art" (Ph.D. dissertation, Indiana University, 1970).
Dramatic changes in the folk art tradition occurred as a result of culture change. Given economic solvency and …

Institutionalization: Trauma And Deliverance, Clemens Bartollas
Faculty Work
The question of how one person can most effectively touch the life of another in a positive way is a significant one, especially for those whose mission is to increase the Kingdom of God. Drawing on extensive experience with juvenile delinquents and on his own scholarly research, Clemens Bartollas addresses himself to precisely this problem. In a sociological perspective, he raises a number of fascinating questions about interpersonal relations, and suggests a model for Christian action.

Anthropology And The Academy Of Science: The Need For A New Role, Timothy C. Klinger
Journal of the Arkansas Academy of Science
Few anthropology papers were presented at the Annual Meetings of the Arkansas Academy of Science before 1968. Establishment of the Arkansas Archeological Survey in 1967 brought an influx of professional anthropologists to the state and a subsequent increase in the number of anthropology papers published. However, the growth in number of active anthropologists has created a need for more information channels within the state. The time is right for the Anthropology Section of the Academy to become a formal base for interaction and information dissemination among anthropologists.

Socialization Of Children, Linda Davis
Socialization Of Children, Linda Davis
Nebraska Anthropologist
The children of a culture represent its greatest asset and responsibility. They insure the survival of a culture if its members can accomplish the formidable task of socialization. Americans are acutely aware of this responsibility. This concern is reflected in the tremendous amount of literature about children. For this reason, I used a familiar type of American literature, the comic strip, for an analysis of socialization in the United States. I chose to study "Dennis the Menace" and "Peanuts" because they deal specifically with children from a white, middle class neighborhood.
Socialization, as defined by Hartley and Hartley (In HSU …

Displacement Of Persons By Major Public Works: Anthropological Analysis Of Social And Cultural Benefits And Costs From Stream Control Measures--Phase 5, Philip Drucker, Charles Robert Smith, Edward B. Reeves
KWRRI Research Reports
This study is concerned with social change and social impact of a major public works project on the human population required to relocate the persons being forced to sell to the Federal Government or turn over through condemnation proceedings homes, farms, and/or businesses to facilitate completion of a Federally authorized stream control measure. It is intended to test the utility of anthropological method and concept in evaluating and explicating sociocultural impact, and in addition to check hypotheses concerning importance of impact on social and economic areas of culture of the persons to be displaced, on their emigration patterns, and their …
