Report By Hans Schwalm On A Meeting With Sd Literature Advisor Ss-Hauptsturmführer Falk, October 21, 1942, Hans Schwalm Oct 1942

Report By Hans Schwalm On A Meeting With Sd Literature Advisor Ss-Hauptsturmführer Falk, October 21, 1942, Hans Schwalm

Norwegian Projects

In this document, Hans Schwalm describes a meeting with SS-Hauptsturmführer Falk, literature advisor of the SD. Falk was unable to recommend individuals to collaborate on Ahnenerbe work, but recommended Schwalm reach out to Fin Halvorsen and SS-Obersturmführer Bischof. He described struggling efforts by Gudmud Schnittler to publish a Norwegian lexikon, attributing the failure to anti-German sentiment and refusal to collaborate. He also warns against the circle of people led by Gulbrund Lunde, as they were focused on Norse identity ("norrön") in opposition to a pan-Germanic concept of identity, including efforts to purge German influences from the Norwegian language.

An Ethnological Study Of Michoacán In The Sixteenth, Seventeenth, Eighteenth Centuries, Carolyn Miles Osborne Feb 1941

An Ethnological Study Of Michoacán In The Sixteenth, Seventeenth, Eighteenth Centuries, Carolyn Miles Osborne

Anthropology ETDs

The purpose of this thesis is a study of life in the Michoacán proceeding the conquest and the changes in this life during the sixteenth, seventeenth, and eighteenth centuries due to the rule of the Spaniards. An attempt has been made to define, in the manner of common to acculturation studies, the cultural base upon which the pro-conquest Tarascans lived and to show how that was blended with the European or changed outright by it. The end of the eighteenth century was selected as a stopping place inasmuch as the rebellion which eventually resulted in Moxican freedom from Spain began …

Counting Systems Of North American Indians, Helen F. Stevenson May 1940

Counting Systems Of North American Indians, Helen F. Stevenson

Anthropology ETDs

The following paper is a study of the numeral systems of North American Indian tribes. Not only the basic systems of counting are considered but, also, the recording devices, the words used for basic numbers with their concrete meanings, "magic" or "pattern" numbers and their relationship, if any, to the system of numeration. Not all of this material is recorded for every tribe; therefore only in so far as material is available is the study complete.

The object of the study is to examine the recorded data on numeration systems and to show the extent of correlation with linguistic and …

A Preliminary Sketch Of Keresan Grammar, Robert Francis Spencer May 1940

A Preliminary Sketch Of Keresan Grammar, Robert Francis Spencer

Anthropology ETDs

As nearly as can be ascertained, the Korosan dialects constitute an entirely separate linguistic stock among the languages of North America. Students of American Indian linguistics soom inclined to agree that only Korosan in New Mexico and Yukian in California stand apart from the nine or ten already formulated and more comprehensive North American linguistic phyla. These two islands of isolated speech have long been sources of philological problems, destroying an otherwise fairly complete theoretical pattern of American Indian languages.

The Direct-Historical Approach In Pawnee Archeology (With Six Plates), Waldo R. Wedel, Jade Robison , Depositor

Nebraska State Historical Society: Transactions and Reports

The direct-historical approach in archaeology assumes the existence of an analogous relationship between historic accounts and prehistoric data, serving to establish cultural identity under the basis of cultural continuity. In this article, Dr. Waldo Wedel uses the direct-historical approach to review some preliminary findings of archaeological investigations undertaken as part of an early effort to study the Pawnee culture of eastern Nebraska. The University of Nebraska Archeological Survey was established in 1929, led by Dr. W. D. Strong, in an attempt to better understand prehistoric Pawnee culture. Previous evidence existed in the form of A. T. Hill’s artifact collection and …

Probable Origins Of The Modern Pueblos, Nan Ashton Glenn Jul 1937

Probable Origins Of The Modern Pueblos, Nan Ashton Glenn

Anthropology ETDs

The Pueblo group of the southwest has probably been given more study than any other culture group of North America. Both functional and historical studies have been made, and faint attempts set forth, to deduce the origin of the modern Pueblo culture, as a whole, from the prehistoric Pueblo culture studied by archaeologists. Theories regarding this origin have varied somewhat during the last ten years, but relatively little attempt has been made to check detailed archaeological or ethnological material of any of the Pueblo groups with data on other groups outside the area. It would seem that as far as …

Elizabethan Left-Overs In Allen County, Alfred Dalton

Masters Theses & Specialist Projects

This study of the Elizabethan influences remaining in the spoken language of the people of Allen County, Kentucky, is an outgrowth of discussion in the English classes of Dr. Gordon Wilson, Western Kentucky State Teachers College, concerning the folklore of the present-day rural people of Kentucky. I have endeavored to give a true picture of the picturesque language of the farming people as they go about their every-day business of making a living, with particular emphasis upon those words and usages that are no longer considered in good use.

Recommendation Letter For Bruno Schweizer From Karl Alexander Von Müller, April 9, 1936, Karl Alexander Von Muller

Bruno Schweizer

K.A. von Müller describes Bruno Schweizer's work at the South-Southeast Institute of the University of Munich and his focus on dialect and folk studies. He emphasizes Schweizer's knowledge and organizing skills and states that Schweizer only left the Institute due to its refocusing on ethnopolitical questions requiring knowledge of southern Slavic, Hungarian and Romanian languages. A strong recommendation, presumably written to the Ahnenerbe.

The Ethnobotany Of Jemez Indians, Sarah Louise Cook Jan 1930

The Ethnobotany Of Jemez Indians, Sarah Louise Cook

Anthropology ETDs

The Indians in New Mexico may be divided into two general types — wandering and pueblo. The Athapascan, or wandering Indians, constitute a group which has drifted from the far north into New Mexico, They are more or less nomadic and war-like, and not agriculturally inclined, therefore to a large extent dependent upon their neighbors. The remaining Indians in New Mexico are the pueblos. These groups are independent, peaceful, and industrious, particularly along their respective lines of weaving, basketry, pottery, and agriculture.

Report Of Department Of Archeology, Nebraska State Historical Society, Elmer Ellsworth Blackman, Jade Robison , Depositor

Nebraska State Historical Society: Transactions and Reports

In this report, State Archeologist E. Blackman wrote to the Nebraska State Historical Society about recently completed archeology fieldwork during 1901. Blackman first reports on recent additions to the Museum and details some of his explorations of 18 Indian village sites. Fieldwork emphasized an investigation of Pawnee sites, including the Wright Site and Burkett Site, both near Genoa. Blackman provides a month-by-month summary of his work, reporting on numerous topics including his travels, publications, and expenses. A broad overview of the archeology of Nebraska is also presented as it was known to that point. At the conclusion of Blackman’s report, …
