Regional Zooarchaeology And Global Change: Problems And Potentials, Thomas Amorosi, James Woollett, Sophia Perdikaris, Thomas Mcgovern Jun 1996

Regional Zooarchaeology And Global Change: Problems And Potentials, Thomas Amorosi, James Woollett, Sophia Perdikaris, Thomas Mcgovern

School of Global Integrative Studies: Faculty Publications

Zooarchaeology is a potentially critical tool for the reconstruction of past regional landscapes. The subfield is increasingly being asked to contribute to long-term studies of human interaction with the environment associated with national and international investigations of past and future global change. Intersite comparison of animal bone collections (archaeofaunas) is central to such regional approaches. However, zooarchaeologists have identified many factors of deposition, attrition, recovery, and analysis that might appear to make such comparisons problematic. Using selected examples drawn from the North Atlantic and Eastern Arctic, this paper suggests that, while intersite comparison is not a trivial problem, it may …

Archeological Investigations For Fort Stabilization And Restoration, For Mckavett State Historical Park, Menard County, Texas: 1978-1990 Seasons, Amy C. Earls, John Leffler

Index of Texas Archaeology: Open Access Gray Literature from the Lone Star State

The U.S. Army occupations at Fort McKavett from 1853 until 1859 and from 1868 until 1883 were part of Texas's frontier defense. During the Civil War and from 1883 until the present, civilians have inhabited and used the fort buildings, creating the small town of Fort McKavett. The Texas Parks and Wildlife Department developed part of the town as a state historical park, restoring this property to its appearance during the second military occupation. Archeological investigations at the park between 1978 and 1990 focused on recovering architectural data and artifacts to support restoration, stabilization, and interpretation of the military occupations. …

Cultural Values Lower Redwood Creek, Susie Van Kirk Mar 1996

Cultural Values Lower Redwood Creek, Susie Van Kirk

Susie Van Kirk Papers

Levee construction on lower Redwood Creek from near its mouth to the mouth of Prairie Creek was completed by the Corps of Engineers in 1968, resulting in significant impairment of the estuary's hydrology and its biological functions. In an effort to reestablish those functions and more particularly the fisheries of the creek, Redwood National and State Parks is developing a plan for estuary management. The following general statement about cultural values in the project area and vicinity was prepared to expand the historical information in the draft plan.

Describing And Comparing Archaeological Spatial Structures, Luann Wandsnider Jan 1996

Describing And Comparing Archaeological Spatial Structures, Luann Wandsnider

Department of Anthropology: Faculty Publications

Quantitative archaeological spatial analysis today is radically different from that introduced more than 20 years ago. Today spatial analysis is couched in more general formational terms that include earlier functional pursuits. Today spatial analysts (1) focus on individual formationally sensitive artifact or element attributes, rather than on types; (2) use distributional rather than partitive methods and techniques; (3) consider a suite of such attributes to construct the formational history of archaeological deposits; and, least commonly, (4) undertake comparative spatial analysis. An elaboration of the latter tactic is proposed here, that of characterizing spatial structure in terms of structural elements (or …

Strawberry Ferry (38k1723) And Childsbury Towne (38k1750): A Socio-Economic Enterprise On The Western Branch Of The Cooper River, St. John's Parish, Berkeley County, South Carolina, William B. Barr

Research Manuscript Series

Frontier expansion in British colonial South Carolina was predicated upon the exploitation of diverse indigenous economic resources and staple crop production. The successful exportation of these inland commodities to world markets depended upon . access to a reliable bulk transportation system of interior rivers and roads. Commercial centers, in the form of centrally located settlements, were established for the transshipment of these products and the importation of finished goods. Socially, these settlements provided many needs for an area's population. Strawberry Ferry and Childsbury Towne - - constructed, established, and supported by elite residents along the western branch of the Cooper …

Wapato For The People : An Ecological Approach To Understanding The Native American Use Of Sagittaria Latifolia On The Lower Columbia River, Melissa Cole Darby Jan 1996

Wapato For The People : An Ecological Approach To Understanding The Native American Use Of Sagittaria Latifolia On The Lower Columbia River, Melissa Cole Darby

Dissertations and Theses

Sagittaria latifolia Willd. was an important root food and trade commodity for the Indians who lived along the Lower Columbia River in early historic times. This plant was prolific in the extensive wetlands of the Lower Columbia from about the great Cascades to the Kalama River. The tubers of this plant were called "wapato" in Chinook Jargon, the local trade language. The wetlands, and this plant that grew there, occupied a vast extent of the Lower Columbia territory; so much so that this valley was named 'Wapato Valley' by Lewis and Clark in 1805. This thesis will provide pertinent information …
