Turkish Journal of Veterinary & Animal Sciences
The etiology of feline nasopharyngeal inflammatory polyps (FNIPs) has not been completely understood. To the best of our knowledge, there is no study having evaluated the immunohistochemical features of FNIPs. More studies about the histopathological characteristics of such lesions can play a pivotal role in further understanding the disease. We present the clinical manifestations, computed tomography (CT) scan, histopathology, and immunohistochemistry features of a FNIP in a 7-year-old male neutered domestic shorthair cat. CT scan examination showed nasopharyngeal space occupation with some parts of destruction in nasal cavity. Immunohistochemical study of the sections demonstrated the presence of CD3$^{+}$ lymphocytes, and …

Analysis Of Spermatogenesis In Young Male Hybrids Bred From Domestic Cattle(Bos Taurus) And European Bison (Bison Bonasus), Andrzej Zyczynski, Marta Kloch, Wanda Olech
Turkish Journal of Veterinary & Animal Sciences
A new attempt was undertaken to check the reproductive capabilities of male hybrids bred from European bison (Bison bonasus) and domestic cattle (Bos taurus). The analysis concerned two hybrids aged 1.5?2.5 years (the latter being sampled twice at 6-month intervals), and additionally one 1.5-year-old backcross hybrid. Examination of testicular tissue revealed halting of spermatogenesis, which was hardly ever able to proceed further than meiosis I. Spermatogenesis was arrested at the stage of spermatogonia and primary spermatocytes. Spermatozoa were found only in the case of one hybrid and these were mostly malformed. To summarize, all the males studied were sterile, despite …

Serodiagnostic Potential Of Brucella Outer Membrane And Periplasmic Proteins, Aitbay Bulashev, Orken Akibekov, Zhanbolat Suranshiyev, Bakytkali Ingirbay, Saule Eskendirova
Turkish Journal of Veterinary & Animal Sciences
The aim of this study was to evaluate the serological diagnostic potential of the Brucella recombinant outer membrane (rOMP25, rOMP31) and periplasmic proteins (rBP26, rSOD) in a comparative way using an indirect enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay (i-ELISA). Rabbit and/or mouse antibodies to Brucella whole cell and/or soluble protein preparations recognized all recombinant proteins used, which confirms the expression of target antigens in E. coli in active form. The recombinant proteins showed different antigenicity to antibodies of cattle kept on a brucellosis-affected (endemic) farm and/or a new focus of infection. Thus, the presence of anti-Brucella antibodies was confirmed by i-ELISA/rSOD in 79% …

Morphometric Analysis Of The Skulls Of Domestic Cattle (Bos Taurus L.) And Water Buffalo (Bubalus Bubalis L.) In Turkey, Ermi̇ş Özkan, Abu Bakar Siddiq, Ki̇fayet Oya Kahveci̇oğlu, Muhsi̇n Öztürk, Vedat Onar
Turkish Journal of Veterinary & Animal Sciences
A total of 20 domestic cattle (Bos taurus L.) and 15 water buffalo (Bubalis bubalis L.) skulls were analyzed in this study. All of the specimens belonged to female individuals. Using a total of 27 craniometric measurements from each of the skulls, 9 indices were calculated. Although there were statistically significant differences between the linear measurements of the skulls of both species, while calculating the indices with their ratios, the values of the measurements of the facial area were determinative in the craniology. Among these indices, the facial index 1 value was statistically significant (P < 0.01) in the comparison of these two species. On the other hand, while considering the orbit and foramen magnum measurements, in contrast with the transversal measurement, the height was more determinant for their index and form.

he current study aims to compare sugar beet leaves (SBLs) ensiled with sugar beet pulp (SBP), sugarcane molasses (SM), or rock candy juice (RCJ) using an in vitro gas production technique. Treatments in the first group included 10% SBP (control 1) and control 1 plus 5% SM or RCJ. In the second group, there were 3 treatments, including 20% SBP (control 2) and control 2 plus 10% SM or RCJ. The silages with no added soluble carbohydrate (SC) sources had significantly higher (P < 0.001) pH, buffer value index, and ammonia nitrogen values than the other treatments. However, there was no significant difference between RCJ and SM in their effect on these variables. Adding both levels of SC sources caused an increase in dry matter digestibility compared to those that only included SBL and SBP (P < 0.001). Maximal and rate of gas production from slowly fermentable fraction (a$_{2}$) were significantly greater when the substrate contained 85%, 10%, and 5% SBL, SBP, and SC sources, respectively. Using dried SBP and SC sources for the preservation of fresh SBL is recommended; however, with higher levels of SC, the silage may be at risk of spoilage, and it must be less exposed to air.

First Evidence Of Holocrine Secretory Mechanism In Granular Ducts Inmouse Mandibular Gland, Bianca Matosz, Flavia Ruxanda, Cristian Ratiu, Vlad Luca, Vasile Rus, Viorel Miclaus
Turkish Journal of Veterinary & Animal Sciences
The mouse mandibular gland contains granular ducts, which possess a particular structure. They are termed granular ducts because they contain numerous granules in the cells lining them, having a secretory activity. We aimed to assess the secretory mechanism in granular ducts. Consequently, we harvested the mandibular glands from five male mice and processed them for histological investigations. A large number of cells appeared intact, without obvious distortions or disruptions in the cell membrane. Based on the morphological aspect, these cells either transferred the secretory product through exocytosis or were in "standby" mode. There were cells that presented prominent bulges of …

Animal Sentience
Chapman & Huffman’s target article calls for a reevaluation of claims of human uniqueness and superiority. It also adds to the literature on how species differences, as Darwin noted, are more of degree than kind. The threats to environmental health and species survival are a consequence of excluding nonhuman animals from moral concern and consideration. The theory of intersectionality should include speciesism in the array of discriminatory practices.

Animal Sentience
The answer to Chapman & Huffman’s question — “Why do we want to think humans are different?” — lies in the work of Ernest Becker and the social psychology literature known as Terror Management Theory, according to which our deep anxiety about animality and death can drive our need to feel superior to the other animals.

Chapman & Huffman reject the notion that human beings are very different from other animals. The goal is to undermine the claim that human uniqueness and even superiority are reason enough to treat other animals badly. But evaluating human uniqueness for this purpose only plays into the hands of those who exploit invidious comparisons between us and other animals to justify mistreatment of the rest of the animal kingdom. What human uniqueness we may discover would still be no justification for how we behave toward other animals. We should also ask ourselves whether any human-centric criterion can be justification for …
Habitat Characteristics And Nesting Ecology Of Golden Eagles In Arizona, Michele J. Losee
Habitat Characteristics And Nesting Ecology Of Golden Eagles In Arizona, Michele J. Losee
Antioch University Dissertations & Theses
Golden Eagles (Aquila chrysaetos) have a broad range globally and in general are well-studied. However, Arizona’s Golden Eagle population remained essentially unstudied until 2011, when Arizona Game and Fish Department (AZGFD) began nest surveys for cliff nesting Golden Eagles throughout the state. As a result of this data collection, the natural history of Arizona’s Golden Eagles is finally revealing itself. This dissertation outlined a reliable description of their nesting phenology that provides a framework for timing surveys and a baseline to monitor the effects of climate change on Golden Eagles. The mean date for egg-laying was February 14 and pairs …
Comparing The Effects Of Swimming Exercise And Dissolved Oxygen On Important Performance Parameters Of Early-Rearing Atlantic Salmon Salmo Salar And Rainbow Trout Oncorhynchus Mykiss., Thomas B. Waldrop
Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)
Swimming exercise (bodylenghts/sec), and dissolved oxygen (DO), are important environmental variables in aquaculture. While there is an obvious physiological association between these two parameters, their interaction has not been adequately studied in Atlantic salmon, Salmo salar and Rainbow trout, Oncorhynchus mykiss. Since both variables can be easily manipulated in modern aquaculture systems, we sought to assess the impact of these parameters, alone and in combination, on the performance, health, and welfare parameters of the two species. Atlantic salmon and Rainbow trout were stocked into twelve circular 0.5 m3 tanks and exposed to either high (1.5-2 BL/s) or low …
