Acute And Chronic Effects Of Thifluzamide On Daphnia Magna, Feyza İçoğlu Aksakal

Turkish Journal of Zoology

Thifluzamide is a thiazole carboxanilide fungicide used to control a wide range of basidiomycete diseases on maize, potatoes, rice, and other crops. Although this fungicide is found in aquatic environments, there is no information about its acute and chronic toxicity on aquatic invertebrates. In the present study, to investigate acute and chronic toxicity of thifluzamide, daphnids were exposed to 1.25, 1.5, 2, and 2.5 mg/L thifluzamide for 48 h and 21 days, respectively. The expression of four oxidative stress-related genes (CAT, GCLC, GST, and GPX) and life-history parameters such as days to the first brood, days to the first egg …

Pelvic And Sacral Size Dimorphism And Allometry In Two Predatory Carnivores With Different Life Histories And Locomotory Adaptations, Alexander Csanady, Peter Krisovsky, Ladislav Hloska

Turkish Journal of Zoology

Sexual size dimorphism (SSD) of the wolf and the lynx was evaluated for 15 pelvic and sacral variables in 48 specimens from the Western Carpathians. Our data confirmed small male-biased SSD in the pelvic and sacral bones for both species. We suggest that this can be explained by the need for a compromise between requirements for locomotion and giving birth. We also confirmed that significant differences exist between the species in the size of the pelvic and sacral bones. We discuss our findings in light of the species? different life histories.

Effect Of Various Antioxidants And Their Combinations On Bull Semen Cryopreservation, Şükrü Güngör, Ayhan Ata, Muhammed Enes İnanç, John P. Kastelic

Turkish Journal of Veterinary & Animal Sciences

Our objective was to evaluate the effects of adding 50 mM trehalose (TRE), 1 mM cysteine (CYS), or 400 µg catalase (CAT), individually or in combinations, to a Tris-based semen extender and determine the effects on fresh, chilled-equilibrated, and frozen-thawed bull sperm. Ejaculates from three Holstein bulls (1-3 years old) were pooled, divided into six equal portions, and put into a Tris-based extender supplemented with no additive (control), TRE, CYS, CAT, TRE + CYS, or TRE + CYS + CAT. In chilled-equilibrated semen, motility was highest in CAT but lowest in the control (P < 0.05). In thawed semen, motility was lower (P < 0.05) in CAT than in all other groups, which were not different. Based on a hypoosmotic swelling test (HOS test), TRE, CYS, and their combinations had higher (P < 0.05) percentages of sperm with an intact plasma membrane than the control or CAT groups. The TRE group had the least (P < 0.05) morphologically abnormal sperm. Plasma membrane and acrosomal integrity (PMAI) and high mitochondrial membrane potential (HMMP) values were highest in TRE and TRE + CYS and were lower (P < 0.05) in the control. Furthermore, HMMP was positively correlated with PMAI and HOS tests, but negatively correlated with major + minor abnormalities (r = 0.66, 0.242, and -0.349). In conclusion, the addition of TRE, with or without CYS, to a Tris-based semen extender improved several aspects of the frozen-thawed quality of bull semen. However, addition of CAT, by itself or in combination with other additives, did not protect bull sperm against cryopreservation-induced defects.

Rhodanthidium ordonezi (Dusmet, 1815) is recognized here as a valid species endemic to central and southern Morocco. It has previously been regarded as a subspecies of R. sticticum (Fabricius). The two taxa are in allopatry throughout most of their respective ranges, but probably cooccur in the Middle Atlas Mountains. Turkish Journal of Veterinary & Animal Sciences

Prevalence of gastrointestinal (GI) parasites and the effect of associated factors were evaluated in household dogs from an urban area of Córdoba, Argentina. A total of 493 fecal samples were collected during 2010 and 2013 and processed with Willis` salt, Sheathers sugar flotation, and formol-ether concentration techniques. Overall prevalence of GI parasites was 45.23% (95% CI 40.83-49.62), and Ancylostoma caninum (30.83%) was the most frequent parasite, followed by Trichuris vulpis (9.94%), Cystoisospora spp. (7.71%), Toxocara canis (6.90%), and Giardia spp. (5.88%). Independent variables were presence of at least one parasite element, named "all parasites", and each GI parasite more frequently …
