Effects Of Wastewater Effluent On Fish Fin Morphology Of Larval Fathead Minnows (Pimephales Promelas) And Swimming Performance Of Smallmouth Buffalo (Ictiobus Bubalus), Seth Michael Bogue

Masters Theses

The Sangamon River flows across central Illinois and is mostly free flowing except in the city of Decatur where it is impounded to form Lake Decatur. The Sanitary District of Decatur (SDD) is located approximately three miles downstream of the Lake Decatur dam. For a significant portion of the year, the stretch of the Sangamon River downstream of SDD is dominated by effluent due to limited discharge from the Lake Decatur dam. This has resulted in heavy nutrient loading, most notably phosphorus, and elevated levels of nickel and other compounds in the downstream section of the river. Smallmouth buffalo ( …

Characterization Of The Rumen Bacterial Communities Of Bison Heifers Fed A Grass-Based Diet Vs A Grain-Based Free-Choice Diet, Anlly Miley Fresno Rueda

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

A century ago, the North American grasslands and prairie ecosystems were dominated by bison. At least 30 million bison roamed the Great Plains when the first explorers arrived. By 1900, there were little over a thousand bison remained in the United States and Canada. Recovery efforts has been made since the 20th century to reestablish the herds and increase the bison population. Today, over 500,000 bison are distributed across North America, with more than 90% of the existing bison population under commercial production. Modern conservation strategies are made via the collaborative efforts of conservationist, producers, and researchers, resulting in increased …

Effects Of Predator Management And Parasitism On Over-Water Nesting Diving Duck Production In Southwestern Manitoba, Trenton E. Rohrer Jan 2021

Effects Of Predator Management And Parasitism On Over-Water Nesting Diving Duck Production In Southwestern Manitoba, Trenton E. Rohrer

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Nest survival of upland nesting waterfowl (e.g., mallard [Anas platyrhynchos], blue-winged teal [Anas discors]) has been studied extensively in the Prairie Pothole Region (PPR) of North America. Conversely, over-water nesting diving ducks’ nest survival is poorly understood, likely because over-water nests are more challenging to find, may be less concentrated, and searching for these nests is physically demanding. Nest depredation is considered a leading cause of duck nest failure and is considered a limiting factor on upland nesting waterfowl production in the PPR. Similar factors limiting upland nesting duck production may limit over-water nesting duck productivity, but studies of this …

A Standardised Analytical Framework For Sampling Fish Communities: Relevance Toturkish Riverine Ecosystems, Lorenzo Vilizzi, Ali̇ Serhan Tarkan, Baran Yoğurtçuoğlu

Turkish Journal of Zoology

Fish communities are important indicators of the health of riverine ecosystems. Fish monitoring for The Living Murray (TLM) initiative, one of Australia's most ambitious restoration undertakings for the degraded river-floodplain biota of the River Murray system (south-eastern Australia), was carried out annually from 2005 to 2011 across six 'Icon Sites', including the habitats and reaches therein. These spatial and temporal components of variation in fish community abundance and composition must be taken explicitly into account for consistent assessment of riverine ecosystem health. To address this requirement, a standardised analytical framework, consisting of a sampling design and appropriate statistical methods, is …

Turkish Journal of Veterinary & Animal Sciences

In this study, the effect of ellagic acid on the performance, egg quality, digestibility, cecal microflora, serum malondialdehyde (MDA) level, and biochemical parameters in quails reared under normal conditions and at high environmental temperatures was investigated. The animals (n = 240; 5-weeks old) reared at 2 environmental temperatures [thermoneutral (TN) and heat stress (HS)] and in 4 diet groups containing different ellagic acid doses (0, 100, 200, and 400 mg/kg) were randomly assigned to 8 groups according to the 2 × 4 factorial design. Feed intake, egg weight, and egg production were higher (P < 0.001) and feed conversion (P < 0.01) was better in the TN groups compared to the HS groups. Egg (P < 0.01) and shell weights (P < 0.001) were higher in the TN groups compared to the HS groups. The effect of ellagic acid supplementation on shell weight was statistically significant in the TN and HS groups (P < 0.05). The effects of environmental temperature and the supplementation of ellagic acid on digestibility of dry matter (P < 0.05), ether extract (P < 0.01), and crude protein (P < 0.01) were statistically significant in the TN and HS groups. Supplementation of ellagic acid reduced the total coliform bacteria count (P < 0.01) and increased the total lactic acid bacteria count (P < 0.001) in the cecum. Serum MDA levels increased with heat stress (P < 0.001) and decreased with the supplementation of ellagic acid (P < 0.001). The effect of environmental temperature on serum glucose (P < 0.001), cholesterol (P < 0.05), total protein (P < 0.05), alanine aminotransferase (ALT) (P < 0.001), sodium (P < 0.05), and magnesium was significant. In conclusion, the supplementation of ellagic acid decreased oxidative stress and total coliform bacteria count and improved the feed conversion and egg quality in quails under heat stress. Moreover, ellagic acid increased the digestibility of nutrients and had a positive effect on lactic acid bacteria. It was observed in this study that these beneficial effects of ellagic acid increased with an increasing dose, and 400 mg/kg was the most effective dose.

GDF9 is an essential gene for normal follicular development and prolificacy in sheep. The aim of this study was to determine the genetic polymorphism and G1 mutation of GDF9 gene exon 1 in 100 Karayaka ewes, belonging to four subpopulations in the Black Sea Region provinces of Turkey. Based on DNA sequence results, two alleles (A and G) and two genotypes (GG and GA) were determined with the restriction fragment length polymorphism analysis of PCR-amplified fragments (PCR-RFLP) method. The frequencies of mutant (A) and wild-type (G) alleles were detected as 0.10 and 0.90. The frequencies of GG and GA genotypes …
