This is the fourth in a series of papers by Jones, et al., dealing with the systematics and distributional status of mammals on the Yucatán Peninsula of México. The present contribution lists 24 native species belonging to the orders Carnivora (18 species), Sirenia (one), Perissodactyla (one), and Artiodactyla (four). Among the carnivores there are one canid, six procyonids, six mustelids, and five felids, whereas the Artiodactyla is represented by two families (Tayassuidae and Cervidae), each with two species.

Comparison Of Artificial Substrates In Bottom Fauna Studies On A Large River, David R. Mcconville

During the summer of 1974, five types of artificial substrates and grab sampling were evaluated for sampling efficiency in pool No. 3 of the Upper Mississippi River. A total of 35 taxa of organisms were collected by the different techniques. Ponar grab sampling collected representatives of only eight taxa, whereas concrete block samplers collected 22 taxa . Intermediate in taxonomic collection were the Hester-Dendy samplers with 21 taxa, the barbecue basket samplers with 20 taxa, the Miller samplers with 17 taxa, and conservation webbing with 12 taxa. A preliminary study was conducted to determine the causative agents of schistosome dermatitis ( "swimmer's itch") in Minnesota and to determine the incidence schistosome infection in vector snails. A total of 1180 snails were collected from ten different localities, eight of which were sites of known schistosome activity . The incidence of schistosome infection in snails from individual areas was always less than 10 percent. Cercariae of Trichobilharzia ocellata from Lymnaea stagnalis were the most frequently-found schistosomes in our study.

A newly recognized virus, lethal for fry and fingerlings, has been isolated from brood stock rainbow trout (Salmo gairdneri) at the Winthrop National Fish Hatchery, Washington. A similar if not identical virus has been found in natural epizootics occurring annually since 1970 among fry of landlocked sockeye salmon (Oncorhynchus nerka) on Honshu Island, Japan. More recently, this agent was isolated from moribund and dead adult O. nerka on Hokkaido Island; Japan, but it remains to be determined whether or not the virus causes death in adult salmonids. The fishery for the western rock lobster* is one of the most important single fisheries in Australia and an important export earner for the State. The fishery is governed by a complex set of regulations which have been reviewed by Bowen (1971) and which are designed to limit the total effort to acceptable levels and to enforce a legal minimum size. It is thus important to constantly monitor the state of the fishery both to ensure that the effort is remaining within the accepted limits and that the regulations are adequately performing their function of maintaining reasonably stable catches. Seed of lupin varieties now available can be combined with wheat or barley to produce a balanced diet for growing/finishing pigs, and lupin seed has become a popular ingredient of pig rations.

As a protein concentrate, lupin seed is a satisfactory alternative to meatmeal, provided adequate amounts of calcium and phosphorus are added as supplements. Without the addition of these elements to rations of lupin seed and grain, a number of problems are likely to arise.

The pig was a forest-dwelling animal from the beginning of its history. In some parts of the world it has been domesticated for at least 7000 years. The European breeds of domestic swine were derived from the local wild pig, Sus scrofa. Herds ranged in pastures and forests and kept indoors only for fattening. The breeds in the Far East were derived from another wild pig, Sus vittatus, a smaller animal with shorter legs and a higher reproductive ability (Mohr 1960; Zeuner 1963). During 1972 and 1973 plants and vertebrate animals were collected and recorded from a proposed 22 000 ha nature reserve centred on a chain of salt lakes in south-western Western Australia (33° 10' S - 33° 35' 8 and 118° 19' B - 118° 29' E).

The dominant plant species were collected, the structural formations desert bed and a vegetation map produced. Seven species of native terrestrial mammal and three species of bat were recorded.

In spite of many years of intensive investigation lupinosis remains a remarkably complex and baffling problem. Current research is throwing new light on the disease and it is now much better understood— although far from beaten.

Lupinosis research is co-ordinated by the Department of Agriculture's Lupinosis Committee, on which are represented all groups working on the disease. These include veterinary surgeons and pathologists, chemists, plant pathologists and animal husbandry specialists.

In conjunction with the U.S. Department of Interior Fish and Wildlife Service, Henderson State University Biology Department made a preliminary study of mourning doves in Clark County, Arkansas, during June, July and August 1974. Three hundred seventy-one mourning doves were baited, trapped and banded to obtain information concerning age, sex, populations, retraps, deformities, effects on other animals, migrations and other behaviors.

A total of 337 bluegill from Lake Fort Smith were used for this study. Annuli were formed between late February and early June, the younger fish forming annuli earlier than older fish. Total length-scale radius and length-weight relationships were determined. Growth of bluegill was compared with that reported in other studies. Growth curves were analyzed by the Von Bertalanffy growth formula and the parameters were evaluated in terms of physical and biological factors.

Current trends in the dairy industry have resulted in an increase in the incidence of lipase flavored butter. Raw cream, fresh and aged 24 h, was divided into 3 fractions and heat treated at temperatures of 72 C, 85 C, and 93 C. Each fraction of cream was churned into butter, with the butter divided and stored at -28. 9 C and 4.4 C. Lipase flavor development was measured organoleptically, by acid degree value (ADV), and free fatty acids (FFA) using a colorimetric procedure. Age of the cream had a significant effect (P< .01) on FFA and. ADV .levels, whereas heat treatment .of the cream had a significant effect (P< .01) on flavor only. Storage time had a significant effect (P< .01) on FFA, ADV, and flavor and the temperature of storage had a significant effect (P< .01) on FFA ·and flavor. Correlation between FFA and ADV was 0.86. There was no correlation between flavor and either JTFA or ADV

The present study was conducted to determine if the protein level of layer diets could be lowered from the: commonly used 16 percent to 12 percent by supplementation of some of the essential amino acids without reducing the performance of hens. The amino acids used were methionine, lysine, tryptophan and isoleucine. Egg production, egg shell thickness, interior egg quality, body weight, feed efficiency and free amino acid content of the albumen of eggs produced were criteria used to measure the (--) to treatment.

Oxygen consumption rates of 51 green sunfish (Lepomis cyanellus, Rafinesque) were monitored over five hours exposure to Treflan E.C. concentrations of 0, 0.32, 0.56, 1.0, and 2.0 ppm. There was a great variation in the responses of the fish at each concentration; and Student's t-tests revealed no significant differences. However, graphs of the mean hourly oxygen consumption rates showed certain trends. During the fifth hour of exposure, there appears to be an acclimation to the Treflan at concentrations of 0.32 and 0.56 ppm; but no such acclimation at the higher concentrations of 1.0 and 2.0 ppm. Ninety channel catfish (Ictalurus punctatus) were trapped during September 1973 through April 1974 at three hatcheries located at Worden, Centralia, and Kinmundy, Illinois. All were examined for parasites and 87 were parasitized. The trematodes Azygia angusticauda and Neascus sp. were found in the gastrointestinal system and Cleidodiscus floridanus and Dactylogyrus sp. were attached to the gills. Five cestode genera, including Bothriocephalus sp., Corallobothrium giganteum, Eubothrium sp., Haplobothrium sp., and Proteocephalus ambloplitis were present. Rhabdochona sp. was the only nematode found. Protozoans; Costia sp., Myxobolus sp., Scyphidia macropodia and Trichodina discoidea and one kind of glochidium were observed. …

Fishes collected from the lower Ouachita River system in Arkansas during 1971-1974 are reported. As a result of these collections six species were added to the Ouachita River system ichthyofauna of Arkansas including an undescribed species of Notropis, Hybopsis aestivalis (Girard), Ictiobus bubalus (Rafinesque), Fundulus chrysotus (Gunther), Lepomis symmetricus (Forbes) and Etheostoma fusiforme barratti (Holbrook). New distributional records for Ichthyomyzon gagei (Hubbs and Trautman), Notropis maculatus (Hay), N. lutrensis (Baird and Girard), Erimyzon sucetta (Lacepede), Fundulus notti (Agassiz) and Lepomis marginatus (Holbrook) within the system also are presented.

The osteology of a Malaysian goby was examined in detail and compared to other gobioids. Results indicated that Trypauaheniahthys sumatrensis is a specialized, but definite member of the Gobioidei. Some osteological characteristics of a related fish, Trypauchen vagina, were also discussed.

Summary. Four of the five subspecies of Geomys pinetis were karyotyped. All specimens examined had a diploid number of 42 and a fundamental number of 80. This karyotype was compared with the described karyotypes of other species of Geomys and was considered to be derived from an ancestoral form having a karyotype of about 70 acrocentric elements.

A series of homing experiments using 39 color-marked Bank Swallows (Riparia riparia) were carried out in eastern Illinois during the summer of 1975. The swallow colony was located four km east-northeast of Charleston, Illinois at the Charleston Stone Quarry. Eight release sites were located in the four compass directions from the home colony at distances of 14.4 to 32.3 km away.

The colony was approached before dawn and swallows were captured using tube traps. Birds were color-marked, banded, and taken in individual bags to the release site by automobile. Cloud cover, wind velocity, wind direction, and orientation behavior …
