Elimination Of Essential (Cu, Zn) And Non-Essential (Cd, Pb) Metals From Tissues Of A Freshwater Fish Tilapia Zilli, Mustafa Kalay, Mustafa Canli

Turkish Journal of Zoology

Tilapia zilli were exposed to the same concentration (1 mg/L) of essential (Cu, Zn) and non-essential (Cd, Pb) metals for 10 days so that these metals would accumulate in the liver, gill, brain and muscle tissues. Subsequently, the animals were transferred to uncontaminated water for a period of elimination, during which samples were taken at days 1, 7, 15 and 30. Cadmium and lead accumulated in all the tissues and the tissue concentrations increased many times compared to the levels of these metals in the control fish (

On The Polymorphic Meadow Spittlebug, Philaenus Spumarius (L.) (Homoptera: Cercopidae), Selçuk Yurtsever

Turkish Journal of Zoology

Due to its interesting biological aspects, the meadow spittlebug Philaenus spumarius has received great attention from biologists for decades. It has been one of the extensively studied species in ecology and genetics. This homopteran insect shows very high habitat diversity and therefore has a wide global distribution. Adults exhibit a heritable colour/pattern polymorphism on the dorsal surface throughout its range. A similar colour/pattern variation also occurs in certain ventral parts. Recent laboratory studies have dealt with its polyandrous aspect that is, females may mate several times with different males and the offspring of a single female may be fathered, therefore, …

Terrestrial Natural Communities Of Nebraska - Version Ii, Gerry Steinauer, Steven B. Rolfsmeier Jan 2000

Terrestrial Natural Communities Of Nebraska - Version Ii, Gerry Steinauer, Steven B. Rolfsmeier

Nebraska Game and Parks Commission: White Papers, Conference Presentations, and Manuscripts

For more than a decade, The Nature Conservancy (TNC) and state natural heritage programs, including the Nebraska Natural Heritage Program (NNHP), have used a “coarse filter/fine filter” approach to preserving biological diversity (The Nature Conservancy, 1994). This approach involves identification and protection of natural communities (coarse filter) as well as rare species (fine filter). Identifying and protecting representative examples of natural communities ensures conservation of most species, biotic interactions and ecological processes. Those species that “fall through” the community filters are generally the rare species. Identification and protection of viable occurrences of rare species serves as the fine filter for …

Conservation In A Highly Fragmented Landscape: The Central Tallgrass Prairie Ecoregional Conservation Plan, The Central Tallgrass Prairie Ecoregion Planning Team

Nebraska Game and Parks Commission: White Papers, Conference Presentations, and Manuscripts

With the adoption of Conservation by Design in 1995, The Nature Conservancy recognized the importance of working at larger scales to achieve our mission which is: the long-term survival of all viable native species and community types through the design and conservation of portfolios of sites within ecoregions. The Conservancy set forth to design conservation plans on an ecoregional basis by working closely with various conservation partners. These plans are intended to provide a framework within which the Conservancy and our partners, such as the Natural Heritage Programs, can make decisions regarding conservation actions to be taken at the …

Cassin’S Sparrow (Aimophila Cassinii) Status Assessment And Conservation Plan, Janet M. Ruth Jan 2000

Cassin’S Sparrow (Aimophila Cassinii) Status Assessment And Conservation Plan, Janet M. Ruth

United States Fish and Wildlife Service: Publications

Cassin’s Sparrow (Aimophila cassinii) is a grassland species endemic to the southwestern U.S. and northern Mexico. Its behavior and ecology have been shaped by these arid ecosystems and the health of its populations is dependent on the availability of grasslands that contain a shrub component. Populations of many grassland birds have experienced dramatic declines due to the loss and deterioration of grassland habitats, and there has been concern about the trends in Cassin’s Sparrow populations. Without better information about population trends, ecology, and effects of management activities, and without a stronger emphasis on grassland management, Cassin’s Sparrows and other grassland …

Nitrogen Balance And Growth Trials With Pigs Fed Low-Crude Protein, Amino Acid-Supplemented Diets, Jose Figueroa, Austin Lewis, Phillip S. Miller

Nebraska Swine Reports

To find out why low-crude protein, amino acid-supplemented diets often reduce growing pig performance, we conducted two experiments. In the first experiment, a nitrogen balance trial, three standard corn-soybean meal diets and three corresponding low-crude protein, amino acid-supplemented diets were used. The diets were: 14% CP and 10% CP + AA, 16% CP and 12% CP + AA, and 18% CP and 14% CP + AA, fed to 12 (90 lb) gilts in three periods of 7 d each. The amino acids lysine, tryptophan, threonine and methionine were added to low-crude protein diets to reach the same total amount as …

The Investigation Of Betaine As A Growth Promotor And/Or Carcass Modifier And The Efficacy Of Betaine To Replace Methionine In Finishing Diets, Steven J. Kitt, Phillip S. Miller, Austin J. Lewis, Robert Fischer Jan 2000

The Investigation Of Betaine As A Growth Promotor And/Or Carcass Modifier And The Efficacy Of Betaine To Replace Methionine In Finishing Diets, Steven J. Kitt, Phillip S. Miller, Austin J. Lewis, Robert Fischer

Nebraska Swine Reports

Dietary betaine’s effect on growth performance and carcass composition of finishing barrows was investigated. Two experiments were conducted to assess whether betaine improves growth and/or carcass characteristics. In the first experiment, barrows were fed either a control diet or a diet supplemented with betaine and were either crowded or not crowded. Shoulder weight was increased in pigs fed betaine. Generally, betaine had no effect on growth performance and carcass characteristics. The second experiment attempted to assess whether betaine can replace methionine in finishing diets. Betaine tended to be associated with increased fat-free lean gain. This experiment failed to show that …

Acylation Stimulating Protein: A Potential Regulator Of Fat Synthesis, Jess L. Miner, Carin Ramsel, Sheila Jacobi

Nebraska Swine Reports

The long term goal of this project is to understand the molecular mechanisms controlling fat synthesis. These experiments indicate that acylation stimulating protein (ASP) can stimulate the incorporation of fatty acids into lipid in cultured adipose tissue. This finding justifies a future effort to determine if manipulation of ASP can modify fat deposition.

Management Of A Bioeroding Sponge On The Pearl Oyster, Pinctada Maxima, Luisa Rawlinson Jan 2000

Management Of A Bioeroding Sponge On The Pearl Oyster, Pinctada Maxima, Luisa Rawlinson

Theses : Honours

This thesis examines environmentally and economically viable ways to manage a sponge that is bioeroding the pearl oyster, Pinctada maxima, in pearl oyster farms throughout north-western Australia. The sponge is causing a massive loss in revenue to the pearling industry as a result of damage to the half-shell, the pearl and, often, death of the oyster. The information arising from this study is important for pearl producers and the Australian pearling industry, to ensure that the best quality P. maxima can be grown in a way that will not have adverse effects on the pristine environment in which these …

Exporting Feedlot Manure To Off-Farm Users, Richard K. Koelsch, Keith Glewen, Tom Trewhitt, Daniel T. Walters Jan 2000

Exporting Feedlot Manure To Off-Farm Users, Richard K. Koelsch, Keith Glewen, Tom Trewhitt, Daniel T. Walters

Nebraska Beef Cattle Reports

A survey of Nebraska feedlots suggests the majority of feedlots do not export manure to off-farm customers despite a common lack of land base (owned or managed by the feedlot) for using the nitrogen and phosphorus in manure. Only a small portion of the feedlots in Nebraska are actively marketing manure as a product with value by packaging agronomic and nuisance avoidance services with the manure in an effort to enhance its value. A separate survey of manure users suggests that the reason users purchase manure was for its crop nutrient value. However, many users were uncomfortable relying on the …

Feed Program Impact On Land Requirements For Managing Manure Nutrients From A Feedlot, Richard K. Koelsch Jan 2000

Feed Program Impact On Land Requirements For Managing Manure Nutrients From A Feedlot, Richard K. Koelsch

Nebraska Beef Cattle Reports

Using data from UNL feeding trials (1998 Nebraska Beef Report, pp. 86- 88) designed to compare the impact of protein and phosphorus intake on nutrient excretion, an estimate is made of the land requirement for manure application. A balanced diet formulated using the 1996 NRC was compared to other typical feed rations. The standard industry ration required an additional 100 and 400 acres of land to manage the additional manure nitrogen and phosphorus excreted, respectively, by a 1,000 head feedlot. A spreadsheet tool is introduced for estimating land requirements for manure produced by alternative feeding programs.

Evaluation Of Fish Scale Chemistry For Determining Habitat Associations, Brian Kenneth Wells Jan 2000

Evaluation Of Fish Scale Chemistry For Determining Habitat Associations, Brian Kenneth Wells

Biological Sciences Theses & Dissertations

This is the first work examining the utility of scale chemistry for determining natal origins and habitat associations. I quantified a relationship of scale chemistry to water chemistry, quantified geographic variation in scale chemistry, and evaluated stability of scale chemistry through maturation. Scale chemistry accurately reflected trace element composition of the water in which fish had lived. Juvenile spot (Leiostomus xanthurus) were held in four concentrations of Sr, Cd, and Ba maintained at either 20°C or 25°C, for 42 days. Strontium:Ca, Cd:Ca, and Ba:Ca levels in scales were linearly related to environmental concentrations while temperature had no effect. …

Growth Curves Of Four Species Of Commercially Valuable Freshwater Mussels (Bivalva: Unionidae), Alan D. Christian, Chris L. Davidson, William R. Posey Ii, Peter J. Rust, Jerry L. Farris, John L. Harris, George L. Harp

Journal of the Arkansas Academy of Science

North American freshwater mussels (Bivalvia: Unionidae) have been exploited commercially for over 100 years and have been regulated using shell size limits and/or harvest seasons. Presently, freshwater mussels are considered a threatened faunal group in North America due to the large numbers of endangered, threatened or special concern species. Therefore, management of this fauna should emphasize their long-term sustainability. The objectives of this study were 1) to construct von Bertalanffy growth curves for selected "commercially-most-valuable" species, Fusconaia ebena, Megalonaias nervosa, Amblema plicata and Quadrula quadrula, from five rivers and two reservoirs, 2) to compare species-specific von Bertalanffy growth curves from …
