Fall Distribution Of Birds In A Palouse River Canyon, Frank B. Golley, Paul A. Johnsgard Oct 1955

Fall Distribution Of Birds In A Palouse River Canyon, Frank B. Golley, Paul A. Johnsgard

Paul Johnsgard Collection

During the fall and winter of 1953 the writers undertook a general ecological study of a portion of the Palouse River valley, near Armstrong, Whitman County, Washington. During the course of these investigations records were kept on the numbers of birds observed and the vegetation in which they were located. It was anticipated that these observations might indicate bird-use of the major vegetational types found in the area. Several investigators (Dumas 1950; Wing 1949) have published distributional data for birds of the Palouse grassland during the nesting, period, but few have been concerned with distribution patterns during the fall migration.

A List Of Cestode Parasites From California Mammals, Marietta Voge Oct 1955

A List Of Cestode Parasites From California Mammals, Marietta Voge

Harold W. Manter Laboratory of Parasitology: Faculty Publications

This report brings together information on the occurrence and distribution of cestode parasites in California mammals. The original information reported herein, was obtained by students, myself, and other staff members of this university. Although the host-parasite list which follows is far from complete, the dearth of knowledge about the helminth fauna in California seems to justify the publication of relatively few data, in the hope that other workers will be able to use this list as a starting point and add to it.

With few exceptions, the common names of the hosts, as given in the host list, were obtained …

Judging Quality In Dairy Products, P. A. Downs Sep 1955

Judging Quality In Dairy Products, P. A. Downs

Nebraska Agricultural Experiment Station: Historical Circulars

In the dairy industry increasing attention is being paid to the question of quality of products. The well established system of buying and selling butter and cheese on the basis of quality by score or grade is practiced in the principal markets of the world. The other dairy products, while not marketed by score, are receiving more and more attention in this respect. As more information becomes available and the judging better standardized, other dairy products will doubtless be sold by grade.

Artificial Insemination Of Turkeys, H. L. Wiegers Aug 1955

Artificial Insemination Of Turkeys, H. L. Wiegers

Nebraska Agricultural Experiment Station: Historical Circulars

Artificial insemination should be used for turkeys when results from natural matings are unsatisfactory. There is no hard and fast fertility rule to follow and each breeder will have his own basis of appraisal for the different varieties of turkeys. But one can say that when fertility drops below 65 per cent it is time to take action.

Mammals Of The Lynndyl, Utah, Sand Dune Area : A Population Problem, Hugh J. Phillips Aug 1955

Mammals Of The Lynndyl, Utah, Sand Dune Area : A Population Problem, Hugh J. Phillips

Theses and Dissertations

The purpose of this study was to determine the kinds, population, distribution, and general habits of the mammals of the Lynndyl sand dune area. Only one article concerning the dunes was found, but several have been written on other dunes; however, none was found concerning mammals. Two quantitative studies, plot and transect trappings, were made and general observations were taken within the study area. Three types of plots; Russian thistle, juniper, and baren moving dunes; were trapped and revealed the following species: Dipodomys ordii, Peromyscus maniculatus, Reithrodontomys megalotis, Onychomys leucogaster, and Neotoma lepida. The most numerous animal in all plots …

An Ecological And Distributional Study Of Small Mammals Of Cedar Valley, Utah County, Utah, Loraine Woodbury Jun 1955

An Ecological And Distributional Study Of Small Mammals Of Cedar Valley, Utah County, Utah, Loraine Woodbury

Theses and Dissertations

This paper deals with the ecology and distribution of small mammals in the following plant communities of Cedar Valley, Utah: juniper, greasewood, grass-rabbitbrush, and shadscale. Study periods were in August 1950 and 1951, October 1951, and April 1952 with each community studied 1,440 trap-nights. A combination of the Calhoun ''B" and transect method was employed; plant species and densities were taken and soil samples were checked for moisture content, total soluble salts and mechanical analysis. In the communities studied Dipodomys ordii utahensis (Merriam) is found in greatest abundance on sandy soil and Perognathus parvus olivaceus (Merriam) is found in greater …
