Growth Measurements Of Holstein, Ayrshire, Guernsey And Jersey Males, H. P. Davis, I. L. Hathaway Jul 1959

Growth Measurements Of Holstein, Ayrshire, Guernsey And Jersey Males, H. P. Davis, I. L. Hathaway

Nebraska Agricultural Experiment Station: Historical Research Bulletins

This study was based on monthly observations of all Holstein, Ayrshire, Guernsey and Jersey males born in the University of Nebraska dairy herd between 1922 and 1942. There were varying numbers of animals for the different months of age for the several breeds. Measurements of weight, slope of the rump, thickness of skin, and 13 linear measurements were taken monthly, from birth to disposal of the animals. The linear measurements were of heights at withers, hooks and rump; of lengths-diagonal (shoulder point to pinbone), body and rump; of widths at chest, hooks and pinbones; of depths at chest and barrel; …

Identification Of Larval Ticks Of The Genus Ixodes Known To Occur In Utah, Leland D. White Jul 1959

Identification Of Larval Ticks Of The Genus Ixodes Known To Occur In Utah, Leland D. White

Theses and Dissertations

The purpose of this study is to present an analysis and key to the larvae of the nine species of Ixodes known to occur in Utah. These are I. kingi, I. muris, I. texanus, I. pacificus, I. spinipalpis, I. marmotae, I. ochotonoe, I angustus, and I. sculptus. Larvae from the first five of these nine species used in this study were reared in the laboratory by worked cited in the secion on Analysis of Species. those of the remaining four were identified on the basis of their presence with identifiable numphal and adult forms. Host specificity, although certainly variable with …

Behavior Of The Red-Footed Booby (Sulasula) In British Honduras, Jared Verner May 1959

Behavior Of The Red-Footed Booby (Sulasula) In British Honduras, Jared Verner

LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses

During three months of the breeding season in a colony of 3500 Red-footed Boobies (Sula sula) on 45½-acre Half Moon Caye, fifty miles east of Belize, British Honduras, that species’ little-known breeding activities were investigated. Feeding flights of boobies began leaving the caye before daylight and returned in the evening until after dark. Wind direction and velocity notably affected the mode of the birds’ departure but little affected their direction. Average flight-unit size was 2.41 birds. Contrary to published accounts, the boobies were able to take flight from the ground.

The Biology Of The Utah Chub, Gila Atraria (Girard), Of Scofield Reservoir, Utah, Harold F. Olson May 1959

The Biology Of The Utah Chub, Gila Atraria (Girard), Of Scofield Reservoir, Utah, Harold F. Olson

All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023

The Utah chub is one of the most important non-game fish in Utah. It has a wide range, and occurs in every drainage in Utah. The Utah chub is not important economically as food fish nor is it of much value commercially. The sportsmen think of this species as trash and do not consider catching or consuming them. However, the Utah chub may be caught on hook and line more readily than many game species. The Utah chub in Scofield Reservoir have been caught by trolling, bait fishing and fly casting and furnish considerable sport when caught with a light …

Lethal Concentrations And Detoxification Time Of Toxaphene For Goldfish, Gambusia And Rainbow Trout, Gar W. Workman May 1959

Lethal Concentrations And Detoxification Time Of Toxaphene For Goldfish, Gambusia And Rainbow Trout, Gar W. Workman

All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023

In the past few years the Utah Fish and Game Department, as well as the fish and game departments of other states, has been spending fisheries money for fish eradication on both lakes and streams. The Utah Fish and Game Department recently suggested to the University that research be initiated on the subject of toxaphene as a fish poison. Consequently, a better insight into conditions that exist for a given water type could be developed.

Feeding Protein, Phosphorus And Energy Supplements To Beef Cows On Utah Desert Ranges, Robert Hyrum Olsen May 1959

Feeding Protein, Phosphorus And Energy Supplements To Beef Cows On Utah Desert Ranges, Robert Hyrum Olsen

All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023

Many of the beef cattle in the Great Basin area are maintained part or all of the year on rangelands. Most of those going on to desert ranges for only part of the year go on during the late fall, winter, and early spring. It is estimated that 50-60 percent of the 600,000 beef cattle grazing on range lands in Utah graze on the one-fourth million acres of desert or semi-desert sometime during the year.

Artificial Pothole And Level Ditch Development As A Means Of Increasing Waterfowl Production, Charles H. Lacy May 1959

Artificial Pothole And Level Ditch Development As A Means Of Increasing Waterfowl Production, Charles H. Lacy

All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023

The glaciated prairie pothole country of the Midwest forms a vital segment of the most important waterfowl breeding habitat in North America. Here are hatched three-quarters of all the ducks raised in the United States. During a recent seven-year period the three-state area of Minnesota and the Dakotas produced an average of 4 to 5 million ducks annually (Janzon, 1947). This wetland region which once comprised 115,000 square miles in five states had shrunk to about 56,000 square miles by 1956 (Lynch, 1956). To maintain the present rate of waterfowl production in the face of continued destruction of habitat through …

Summary Of Research On Diethlstilbestrol For Growing And Fattening Beef Cattle, D.V. Radabaugh, L.B. Embry Apr 1959

Summary Of Research On Diethlstilbestrol For Growing And Fattening Beef Cattle, D.V. Radabaugh, L.B. Embry

Agricultural Experiment Station Animal Husbandry Pamphlets

Numerous experiments on the response of growing and fattening cattle to stilbestrol have been reported in recent years. There has been a response to stilbestrol in most of these experiments, though to varying degrees. Many of the reports have been of a preliminary nature and in several instances have covered only one trial. A review of such experiments individually does not present a clear and concise picture of the effects of stilbestrol treatment. Therefore, results of most of the reported experiments have been reviewed and are summarized in the tables in this pamphlet. Four rather distinct phases of cattle feeding …

Notes On Scottsbluff, Nebraska, Tornadoes, 27 June 1955, Robert G. Beebe Mar 1959

Notes On Scottsbluff, Nebraska, Tornadoes, 27 June 1955, Robert G. Beebe

National Oceanographic and Atmospheric Administration: Technical Reports and Related Materials

Some general characteristics of thirteen tornadoes that occurred on the afternoon of June 27, 1955 in Scottsbluff County, Nebraska, are related. Two of these caused widespread attention due to their size and their proximity to the cities of Scottsbluff and Mitchell, Nebraska. These two were photographed extensively by residents near their paths. The experience of two men directly beneath one of the two large tornadoes is related.

A "conservative" taxonomic character is one which preserves evidence of evolutionary relationships. As Mayr (1942: 296) points out such characters are rare because structures are usually lost quickly when no longer needed and selection seldom neglects a functional structure for very long but continually modifies it as adaptive fitness is increased. However, because different characters evolve at different rates it is possible to find some characters which have changed more slowly than others and to use these as phylogenetic indicators. In birds, for example, plumage color and structure apparently change more rapidly than the skeleton or the muscular system. This …
