Covariances Among First-Lactation Milk Records Of Cousins, L. Dale Van Vleck, C. L. Hart
Covariances Among First-Lactation Milk Records Of Cousins, L. Dale Van Vleck, C. L. Hart
Department of Animal Science: Faculty Publications
Covariances among first-lactation milk records expressed as deviations from herdmate averages of Holstein cows related as cousins of varying degree, as daughterdan1, as full and maternal sibs, and as aunt-niece of varying degree were examined to determine whether genetic maternal effects are important. The multiple regression of the expected coefficients of additive direct, additive maternal, dominance direct, and dominance maternal genetic variance components; and additive direct by additive maternal and dominance direct by dominance maternal genetic covariances on the 24 estimated covariances between pairs of relatives gave a multiple correlation coefficient of .95. The regression of actual covariance on the …

High Rates Of Photosynthesis In The Desert Shrub Chrysothamnus Nauseosus Ssp. Albicaulis, Tim D. Davis, N. Sankhla, W. R. Andersen, D. J. Weber, B. N. Smith
High Rates Of Photosynthesis In The Desert Shrub Chrysothamnus Nauseosus Ssp. Albicaulis, Tim D. Davis, N. Sankhla, W. R. Andersen, D. J. Weber, B. N. Smith
Great Basin Naturalist
Basic aspects of photosynthesis were investigated in white rubber rabbitbrush (Chrysothamnus nauseosus (Pallas) Britt. ssp. albicaulis), a common C3 deciduous shrub native to arid regions of the western U.S. Under favorable field conditions, net photosynthesis (Pn) ranged from 36 to 73 mg CO2 · dm −2 · hr−1, which is relatively high for a woody species. The leaves from the actively growing flowering shoots exhibited higher Pn than those on the vegetative shoots. Pn also varied according to the age of the leaves and the location of the plants. P …
Including Records Of Daughters Of Selected Bulls In Estimation Of Sire Component Of Variance, L. Dale Van Vleck
Including Records Of Daughters Of Selected Bulls In Estimation Of Sire Component Of Variance, L. Dale Van Vleck
Department of Animal Science: Faculty Publications
Methods to account for selection in estimation of variance components are computationally difficult and require inclusion of records on which selection was based. The last criterion often cannot be met. Within a time records of daughters in the small sample set for a bull should be relatively free of effects of selection. If only such records are used, many herd-year- season subclasses, however, contain only one record, so that those records are eliminated when herd-year-season effects are absorbed. Including records of daughters of few but heavily used and selected bulls would provide more comparisons within herd-year-seasons, but treating effects of …
Multiple Paternity In A Territorial Passerine: The Bobolink, Thomas A. Gavin, Eric K. Bollinger
Multiple Paternity In A Territorial Passerine: The Bobolink, Thomas A. Gavin, Eric K. Bollinger
Faculty Research & Creative Activity
Electrophoretic and behavioral evidence corroborate the conclusion that Bobolink (Dolichonyx oryzivorus) females occasionally copulate with more than one male, which results in the insemination of a single clutch of eggs by those males. In 2 of 12 families from which blood samples were obtained from the mother, the putative father, and the nestlings, at least 2 males were responsible for fertilization of the clutch. We believe this is only the second bird species in which multiple paternity has been documented conclusively in the wild. Our speculation that it may not be uncommon leads to a caution for evolutionary biologists who …

The Antibody Production By Swine In Response To Sheep Red Blood Cells, Deborah Seymour
The Antibody Production By Swine In Response To Sheep Red Blood Cells, Deborah Seymour
Masters Theses & Specialist Projects
Two experiments were conducted to study the antibody response of pigs challenged with the general antigen sheep red blood cells (SRBC).
In one experiment SRBC's were injected at one of four sties: intramuscularly into the neck, intramuscularly into the ham, subcutaneously into the fore flank or rear flank. These treatments were repeated four weeks later. The antibody responses to the four treatments were determined by microtiter and analyzed statistically. No significant (P> 0. 10) differences were found among responses to the four treatments during the fourth and eighth weeks after injections, but a significant (P<0.05) difference was found during the fifth week among all four groups. Coefficients of correlation showed highly significant (P<.0.01) relationships between SRBC antibody titer during the fourth week after injections and increase in weight of test animals from the beginning of the study until slaughter.
In a second experiment pigs …

The Relationship Between Habitat Structure And Small Mammal Communities In Southeastern Virginia And Northeastern North Carolina, Roger Keith Everton
The Relationship Between Habitat Structure And Small Mammal Communities In Southeastern Virginia And Northeastern North Carolina, Roger Keith Everton
Biological Sciences Theses & Dissertations
A variety of terrestrial habitats was pitfall trapped in the vicinity of the Great Dismal Swamp of eastern Virginia and North Carolina to evaluate the small mammal community within the region. Habitat variables were measured at the end of the growing season on 21 0.25 ha grids. Four multivariate tests were used to examine the small mammal communities, their relationship with habitat structure, and the role of habitat selection in community structure.
Cluster and ordination analysis revealed the existence of two distinct associations of small mammals, and their habitat types, within the region. The small mammal associations were interpreted as …

Western Water Law in Transition (Summer Conference, June 3-5)
Conference organizers and/or faculty included University of Colorado School of Law professors James N. Corbridge, Jr., Lawrence J. MacDonnell, Richard B. Collins, David H. Getches and Charles F. Wilkinson.
The prior appropriation doctrine has governed the allocation and use of water in the western United States since the 1850s. The shifting nature of water demand is bringing about changes in the traditional legal system. This conference will consider the fundamental principles of the prior appropriation doctrine together with the important new developments in the law now underway throughout the West.

The Relationship Between Linear Measurements & Subjective Placings In Elite Angus Cattle, Ted Dyer
The Relationship Between Linear Measurements & Subjective Placings In Elite Angus Cattle, Ted Dyer
Masters Theses & Specialist Projects
The cattle shown from 1981 to 1984 at the American Angus Breeders' Futurity were studied to determine the relationship between linear measurements and the judge's subjective placings. Linear measurements taken prior to the showing included wither height, hip height, and body length for both bulls and heifers. In addition body weight and scrotal circumference were recorded for bulls. A total of 624 cattle were studied-- 407 heifers and 217 bulls.
The cattle were divided into five groups by age and sex to analyze the annual difference in means and standard deviations for all recorded measurements. Among all five groups of …
